The "Everyone's talking about it" promos were really strong. And there were indeed creating big talking points which hooked in even non regular viewers. I don't think the show, right now, should be heading backwards, but it would be a good idea to look at what worked in the past and try to recreate past successes in a new way. Because at the moment, _nobody_ is talking about it.
Remember being so excited at this. Was too young to remember dirty den originally & only ever heard about the legend. So the hype was real to finally see him on the square !
I use to think the same thing but I think some aspects worked well than others. I think his rivalry with with Phil Mitchell, the armed Robbery were pretty good scenes!
Hit & miss. The writing wasn't as strong as it had been in the 80s, writers shoehorning into stuff like Bobby's Paternity felt forced and Fairground Disaster was a full on joke ("Get Den Watts,")...and then things got worse when writers openly tried to bury Den in order to punish Grantham after the webcam scandal.
He was great when he returned in the beginning, but after the Phil fued in 2004, he was just becoming nasty. They definitely wrecked his character by the end, with the whole Zoe stuff.
I thought it worked brilliantly. 2003-05 were brilliant years for the show. Chrissie became an iconic character, and I imagine it must've been very difficult and risky to try to get the right character and actress to pair with Den after how legendary he and Angie were. It's a shame we only got the Wattses as a full family for such a short time. Den only went bitter and nasty towards the end, and the Zoe pregnancy was an awful plot seemingly contrived to give a murder motive.
@dsd310580 when den came back in 2003 it was so good the way he set phil up, BUT unfortunately the writers completely screwed his character up in 2004/2005. I know people loved sharon and Dennis storyline.BUT it never made sense to me. I wished they have got den and Dennis together like father and son. Just my opinion
@@user-cw5qp7ty9t Completely agree. I’ve watched Eastenders since day 1. Since I was 5 years old. My whole family have. And I’ve watched it all again on Drama. I still watch it to this day. Den and Angie, plus Ethel, were my all time favourite characters. Den and Angie reminded me so much of my Mum and Dad. They were both integral to Eastenders success. It was sad when they left. So when Den came back after nearly 15 years, I loved it. They explained it very well. Was a very plausible way to bring him back. We never did actually see him die. Only ever heard a shot. And it was so good when he came back. I wanted him back in the Vic much sooner than he got back in there. Had his family around him. He was a big deal again. And it was nice having a break from Phil. I can’t stand Phil. He’s been a moody old bully for far too many years now. And yeah, I was adopted. Between 2 Sisters. When I was 6 months old. So my Mum became my Aunt and my Aunt became my Mum. I never once didn’t see my Adoptive Mum as my Mum. She raised me. She loved me. I love her and miss her so much. We had such a close bond. So Sharon and Dennis should’ve just been Brother and Sister. Nothing more. It was wrong for them to get together. And Den should’ve embraced having a Son. I hated the way they had Den treat Dennis, I felt so bad for Dennis. They should’ve been a strong family unit. And they never should’ve killed Dan off for real, a year and a bit after bringing back from the dead. After nearly 15 years of trying to get him to come back and he finally did. The amazing way they brought him back. And finally getting him back in the Vic. Just to kill gin off. I was so gutted. The fact he slagged off some cast mates shouldn’t have affected his job. Some people who work together have to tolerate each other and don’t really like each other. Happens a lot. You’re meant to leave your personal problems at the door when you go to work. They’re Actors. They should’ve been professional. Work with someone. Don’t mean they have to like them. And so what if he was getting kinky on a web cam? Don’t affect his ability to do his job. He was set up by a scummy Reporter anyway. It was supposed to be private as far as he was concerned. They’d already suspended him. There was no reason to ax him. And he could’ve just gone back to Spain, after the showdown with the 3 women in the Vic. Left him there. Bring him back in the future. Even if it was just to visit Sharon. Didn’t need to kill him. They should never kill off iconic characters like that. They never learn. That’s why they’ve now brought 3 iconic characters back from the dead. Den, Kathy, and Cindy. Each one a brilliant return. Each reason plausible. But far fetched all the same. 4 times, if you count the con that Nick was trying to pull on Dot when he had her think he was dead.
@@dsd310580 I've just read everything that you said and I completely agree. I'm guessing your around aged 44 if you was 5 when eastenders first aired. I'm 28 born in 1996 BUT I love the history of eastenders but stopped watching it in 2013. It went downhill for me BUT I was still gutted when they changed sets after all those years, money speaks a lot but it can never replace history. Den and angle years was the best. Forget the Mitchell's, den and angie was the first KING and QUEEN of eastenders. There can only be one first and that was them two.
