    I want to address a few things here.
    1) The me too comment was NOT a joke and I wanted to address this because I think it's very important and wanted to let guests know there were consequences. I was trying to speak in a way to protect character integrity while illustrating the things performers go through. Perhaps I could have phrased this in a different way, it was just the first thing that came out of my mouth.
    2) I was disappointed in some of the things said as well, I'll just get that out there.
    3) people have to keep in mind that this was highly edited. I have essentially the same speech about not expecting things for free and not to ask for them and not to be rude to cast members for free things. I mentioned things I had heard of happening and then went on to say that this is all just magic made at CMs discretion. The only parts included were the specific things I mentioned. Some things I said were out as answers under different questions that they were intended for. I also asked them specifically to keep character integrity in the way that I was trained at the time to do. Clearly other people didn't feel the same way. I even gave a whole speech on the importance of it that didn't make it in. I also made a point about respecting the times when characters have to leave and not harrassing about wait times. These things were not included.
    I get some of these frustrations, but also feel very frustrated by how much people take their frustrations out on other CMs rather than the employer that does a lot of things i consider wrong or the editing of people who don't know better.
    I in large part participated because I thought there were some important things to educate on, and most weren't included or highly edited. In the original email where they asked what I would like to say, that's what I mentioned and what I expected to talk about. Most of these questions were also a surprise.

      Jessalyn Rae thank you so much for taking the time to respond! I have to say, I GREATLY appreciated when you talked about consequences for guests who do or say inappropriate things. I wanted to address that in this video because I don’t understand why guests treat performers like they’re not people. It’s also great to know a lot of it was the way they edited it. That makes me really sad to hear they cut out a lot of what you wanted to say. Especially since it was edited to look like almost the opposite of what you intended. I hope you don’t mind me pinning your comment, I think a lot of people will appreciate hearing your thoughts!

      Jessalyn, I just want to let you know that I feel for you after reading your comment! I actually got interviewed for Glamour about a personal topic and was severely misquoted and misrepresented on social media by their marketing team. I was up all night crying and sent hundreds of emails to the journalist to have them fix it, and it wasn't even her fault because she only wrote the article and wasn't in charge of the social media posts! After that, I realized that being asked to get interviewed for articles or videos isn't necessarily as flattering as it might seem. I'm so sorry they misquoted you and put your responses in different questions. It might not mean much, but you have my full support in this!

      It's a commonly known fact that those interviewed for articles, videos, anything not live, often have their answers & comments manipulated. I thought you guys made a fun video that was actually informative. I had so much respect for the cast members / Princesses after your Buzzfeed video because I could tell that it was not the easiest job but you had to do it with a smile with someone else's persona on. I did not know exactly how much was in the tunnels & that really amazed me. I could tell that the comments about it being dark & creepy were jokes. I mean, what is creepy about people trying to get a few minutes to breathe out of their hot costumes, right? Exactly. I'm sure there was so much more you all wanted to say so I'm sorry you weren't able to. I'm sure they were worried that if it dragged on & on that people would stop watching. It helped that all of you are so animated & entertaining so maybe it could have been longer. (I was actually left wanting more.) Thanks for doing the video Jessalyn Rae!

      Speaking of character integrity (for ANY character from ANY studio, really), I have a question.
      What is the procedure for when a parent is harsh with their children and they start screaming things like "MICKEY ISN'T REAL!!" or "THEY'RE JUST WOMEN IN COSTUMES!!", and they're doing things like hitting their children and screaming profanities at them?

    Also, I agree you never know what the guest or cast member is going through! I remember a few years ago after my grandmother was diagnosed with lung cancer, we went to magic kingdom to celebrate our family. It was very clear that this was nanny's last time ever in the parks, so it was a very emotional day. When we went to meet our favorite mermaid, I remember my grandmother myself and Ariel were sitting on the clam in the grotto. Ariel referred to my grandmother as "the queen" of the family and asked her how her day was going. Fighting back tears my grandmother replied "I've been better Ariel!" I then remember Ariel stopped signing the autograph book and just gave her the biggest hug and kept holding her hand even after the picture was done! My grandpa and I were trying not to cry ourselves!

    Just as a casual observer, I really enjoyed the Buzzfeed video. It was scandalous and interesting. But now listening to you, I'm realizing that just because it's a fun bit of drama for me, it's something other people take really seriously and I never thought of all the implications of what they said. This potentially could really affect the illusion the Disney tries so hard to maintain and could affect the way the workers are treated in a negative way with being encouraged to complain and such. Thank you for showing me this other perspective. I'm loving your channel.

    • @kenziemacbrown

      I don't usually mind watching videos like those at all. There are ones on CZcams that expose way more "secrets" than this one did. I think what I found to be upsetting was that they were making it seem like they were a valid resource and said things I really don't think are true. Especially when they were going over the question of "what can guests get for free". I have no problem with people expressing their opinion (negativei or positive), but I didn't like that they made their opinion seem like facts and encouraged behavior that could make current cast members' jobs harder.

  • @charlesleroy5259
    @charlesleroy5259 Před 5 lety +229

    Buzzfeed is the actual worst. The video was full of dated clickbait that has been general knowledge for years and things that are not correct. As a "friend of Mickey" I can tell you their video was full of mistakes or misconceptions.

    • @kenziemacbrown
      @kenziemacbrown  Před 5 lety +15

      Agreed! Honestly, when I compare the video content to the title, I feel like it wasn't very accurate. There are SO many more videos on CZcams that actually expose "secrets" way better. I think that was one of the things that bothered me the most - that the former cast members opinions were being played off as "truths" when they're not. Yes, guests can get things for free on occasion. But it doesn't come about as a direct result of rude behavior or them asking for it.

    I only have time to watch half of this right now, but I agree with everything your saying! Most recently I was a merch cast member and there are enough people complaining and being horribly rude already, I can't even imagine the negative impact buzzfeed video is going to have on cast members and guest expectations! My friend works attractions and I don't think he'd ever give someone a fast pass if they asked for it. To make magic? Yes. Give you one because you expect it? Not happening

    • @kenziemacbrown
      @kenziemacbrown  Před 5 lety +4

      Thanks Olivia! I bet you'd have an interesting perspective watching the video since you worked both in entertainment and merch! Part of me wonders how much the performers' views in what guests could get for free were skewed. Working both as an attendant and as a performer I experienced SO many more rude guests as an attendant, I really don't think I had do deal with any as a performer (at the level I would experience them as an attendant).
      And yes, I seriously doubt any attractions people will just give away a fastpass to rude guests! I think guests and cast members are going to view this video differently. Cast members know how bad the situation already is (when it comes to rude guests being demanding) whereas I feel like a lot of the people watching this video think it's cute and harmless.

    As a current cast member "complain to the right person" definitely made me mad because I've definitely experienced people who know this and do this and it's incredibly frustrating. My friend in attractions in Animal Kingdom had so many people complain just to get a fast pass to Flight of Passage (which luckily they weren't allowed to give) and that frustrated her a lot.
    On the Disneyland passholder facebook page people will tell others what to say to get to the front of lines or to use special assistance options like the ramp for the trams (which the ramp is for handicap guests or guests who can't handle the step and not for lazy moms so that makes me really mad) and I find it ridiculous that people would do that especially when they're passholders and can come whenever they want.
    I didn't love the video and I feel like Buzzfeed didn't care about Disney's integrity but there were some good advice, just the majority of the advice wasn't great to me. And these former cast members don't seem to know much about other roles and it seems like they might have worked for the company a little while ago because of some of the advice they gave and things they said wasn't super accurate in my opinion. The only people who can give out fast passes are attractions and I would give free ice cream to a really nice child or a free drink to a birthday prince or princess as a magical moment in food and beverage but we couldn't just give out free stuff whenever we wanted.

      I don't think they had bad intentions, I think they probably just had no clue what they were saying. As someone who worked both as a performer AND as an attendant, I can tell you that if I worked just as a perfomer I would've had no idea how rude guests can be. You really don't see that part as a performer. As an attendant I was HORRIFIED at how rude guests can be and this video upset me because I cannot understand why they would ever encourage that behavior. Especially since they weren't the ones who had to deal with that. I truly hope this video doesn't make your job any harder!

      Our first trip to Disney World was three weeks ago we waited 2 1/2 hours and honestly FLIGHT OF PASSAGE ...it was worth every second. If all my daughter and I got to do that day was this one ride I would have felt the ticket was worth the price. We enjoyed talking to the people in line ( we were in line w people from 4 other countries!!! Eeeekkkk how exciting is that!!! ) and at about the one and half hour mark there was so much to look at... each turn in the line held unique things. I do wish they had some flip chairs that would how do I describe it. Uh flip up and down on the hand rails because I saw grandparents getting very tired of standing and brief moments to sit could have renewed their energy. Again ... the ride was worth the wait!!!

    I agree with Ariel's facepalm thumbnail!!! This really does sadden me! I work in food at epcot and I can confirm people "dropping" there food after they are almost finished and blaming it on their small children to get another new serving. Most guests are very kind, but unfortunately there are some very entitled people in this world. I sometimes wish that people would appreciate how hard cast members work all to create a perfect happy family vacation. Magical moments are called "magical" moments for a reason, and I am so glad to have created one for the first time the other day:) I do like how they brought up not being creepy to the character, I would agree with what you said about how cast members are real people too! *My thoughts:* I didn't like how in the video they said something about how cast members will just give out free stuff like castle stays or fast passes or what have you. I mean it does happen, once in a blue moon, but like I feel what they were saying could wrongfully trigger some guests to feel entitled, like the cast members owe them something. And I'm pretty sure one of them even said "if you complain enough"...O___o What kind of person encourages guests to be even *harder* on the cast members than they already are? I can't believe any cast member would say that, but then again their experiences of being character performers were different than say a merchandise CM or an attractions CM, because everyone loves the characters. Overall, It just seemed inconsiderate.

      I completely agree. The part that was hard for me to understand is the fact that they are encouraging guests to complain to current cast members. Especially since they themselves were cast members. Why would you do that to someone? Maybe they didn't experience rude guests (I know I didn't as frequently or to the extent that I did as a character attendant when I was a performer), but that is so unkind to encourage rude behavior. But yes, I completely agree. I truly hope it doesn't make things worse for current cast members.

    The only free thing I’ve gotten from Disney was on my birthday. I hadn’t eaten dinner and ran to Casey’s corner before the Happily ever after fireworks. I ordered the corn dog nuggets, fries, and a water. I could see they were fixing my order when a CM put a slushee on my tray. When they called my number I immediately said, “oh, I didn’t order that!” She was so sweet and said, “I know. Happy Birthday!” It was so sweet! The only time I’ve gotten a fast pass is because the ride broke down. I got to do the keys to the kingdom tour this year and they said the only time they let people stay in the castle was for the year of a million dreams campaign. They said nobody could pay enough money to stay in the Cinderella castle suite! Not even celebrities! I hated watching the buzzfeed video. It was very cringy!

      That's so wonderful! I can understand how things can accidentally get shared by someone who was excited about their experience. For example - a person sharing a story about how they were having a bad day, struck up a genuine conversation with a cast member outside of Splash Mountain and that cast member wanted to do something nice and gave them a fastpass. But I think it's totally different to just come out and say "if you complain to the right person you can get..." I think you should be able to talk about your experiences, especially if they were positive! I just don't understand those cast members encouraging people to complain with the motivation of trying to gain something.

    The question of what can you get for free at Disney made me STEEEAAAMMMEED!!! Speaking as a former attractions cast member, we do not just GIVE AWAY fastpasses. And honestly, even if we do do that magical moment, we are restricted on what fastpasses we can give. And just in general for that section, everyone say this with me: DO. NOT. ASK. FOR. MAGICAL. MOMENTS. AND. FOR. FREE. STUFF! Anyways, I truly appreciated this video and thank you for voicing!

    Thank you for doing this video! I saw the title of the video and immediately skipped over it. I appreciate that being a cast member is pretty awesome and I can appreciate that people want to share their experiences. However, I think sometimes people should think about their actions and how it may impact others. In my opinion, Disney is magic! It is like stepping into the movies and books you experienced as a kid and maybe even an adult. I appreciate your approach on this video and the fact that you took an objective approach. Thank you for sharing, much appreciated!

I feel like they work really hard to help everyone have a magical experience and the segment you mentioned may make it more difficult on them. As someone who worked both attractions and merch I can confirm that getting things for free is not a thing, truly so many people have tried to abuse the system that even magical moments are heavily monitored by leaders, so it would have to go through them first! If I happened to be at the top of the fastpass entrance and wanted to create a magical moment I could let guests through, but I’d have to call in a leader to approve so they’d notify the CM at the second fastpass station, so yeah, it’s not that easy. And paper fastpasses are nowadays only available to leaders as well, so definitely not a thing you can just ask any CM to do, for sure! As for the “getting a hat for free”, again it happens incredibly rarely and more inexperienced CMs who are just getting the hang of rules could get pressured into giving out free stuff by complaining guests, and then probably get fired right after, so that portion of the video made me very sad 😔

Besides the fact I feel like cast members would get in trouble if they regularly handed out fastpasses to guests because it would hurt the system they have in place. Haha yes, very cringeworthy! I worked as a character attendant mainly at MK too! So cool! So you get how rude guests can be - especially when closing the line. I think that's why Ladawn's comment about "if you complain to the right person they'll get you to the front of the line to meet Tiana" bothered me the most. Because how is that fair to all the families you turned away? That happened to me one time - where I turned away several families yet a manager let a random, unhappy family in. I really didn't think that was fair or justified.

    @LaraAkalUMN Před 5 lety +6

    When I first watched their video, I’ll admit I kinda zoned out and wasn’t completely paying attention so I only really remembered more of the content in the first and last parts, when they talked more about when to visit the Parks and how to treat cast members with respect. The bar was set pretty low since I'm a person who really doesn't like those "dark side of working for Disney" videos that sensationalize and try to make things into an exposé- not really my thing. So, my initial reaction was "ok, this turned out a bit better than how I was expecting it to be, but there were some things said that I think really shouldn’t have been said”. I really appreciate your deep dive into this and emphasizing positivity, debunking misinformation, safety at the Parks, character integrity, keeping the magic intact, and really encouraging kindness towards cast members!

    • @LaraAkalUMN
      @LaraAkalUMN Před 5 lety +2

      I do worry that this will have an impact and limit how much future cast members will be able to share about their love of their job, and I hope nobody gets in trouble for some of the generalized statements and especially some of the misinformation and shattering of the magic. I’ll admit I am probably way too curious sometimes about how things work, since I’m a prospective cast member and would love to work for Disney someday. I really try not to let that curiosity get the best of me, but in the past I certainly wanted to consume any and all information I could get. Given my new job as a character performer at a different theme park, I now view a lot of the safeguarding of sensitive work-related information in a whole new light - actually wording it that way made me realize how serious it can be. Being in the business of making people happy is SO incredibly rewarding. I wouldn’t want any of the magical moments we get to offer to be taken for granted because people compromised information that could give some people an “easy way in”, if that makes any sense. I think it’s so incredibly important to treat people with kindness and not pry too deep into confidential material, but to stay respectfully curious and inquisitive, to keep appropriate boundaries, to let some mysteries and secrets continue to remain mysteries and secrets, and to be a kind and courteous guest and human being in general!

    I can honestly appreciate this video so much. My family and I are big Disney lovers, I grew up going every single year and still go often being an adult. We are even planning a big family trip next fall. I come from a family that truly appreciates the magic of Disney. One year my grandma got sick at Downtown Disney, she ended up being ok but when we checked out of our hotel at the end of our trip they had a gift basket for her, I thought it was the sweetest gesture. I’m not sure why people feel the need to sabotage the magic of Disney, I don’t think people like that deserve to work for a company that is supposed to portray positivity and happiness. You’re so sweet and genuine and it’s because of people like you that the magic of Disney can be conserved. So from a big Disney fan, thank you!

A lot of my friends told me about this video since I worked there and when I watched it I felt uncomfortable when they talked about complaining to cast members to get free stuff. I have had aggressive guests before and it’s scary and hurtful and I never gave people like that a magical moment. I also was sad to see all the character integrity breaks as well. I believe in keeping the magic at all times and just because it might not ruin the magic for that person and their friends it could for others. There were so many funny parts in their commentary but overall I wished they kept the video more positive and friendly for cast members and the public.

    I just wanted to share about my last trip to Disney last month. I went to Disney in the mid 70’s when I was I kid, then again in like 84 & saw Epcot when it was new. Then I didn’t go again until 2013. I proposed to then girlfriend in front of the castle but overall we didn’t have a good trip, didn’t plan well, only rode 4 rides & saw the show in front of the castle. So I talked her into going back for our honeymoon in 2015. Great trip that time! Did a lot but truth be told, we should not have gotten married. We divorced in 2017. I was planning on returning in 2019, the year I turn 50 but then I decided, why wait & a friend wanted to take her daughter so we teamed up & went together & ran into a friend & his fiancé from Pittsburgh. Honestly, after the divorce, losing my wife/best friend, my house my dogs, I was in a very dark place but planning a great vacation kept me going. Spent a week there in October, went to the Halloween party, met 26 characters and as a 49 year old guy at Disney, I was never happier., I didn’t meet “the character” Merida. I met Merida. I was there to have fun & experience magic, which I did, you see my Instagram or Facebook pics & you’ll see the biggest smile ever!! The magic of Disney basically saved my life & put me on the path to moving to Florida & getting a job there.

As adults we can obviously put two and two together, but it's amazing how Disney manages to keep the magic alive in a world full of skeptics who want to unearth all the "secrets". Even after the "magic" was "ruined" for me, I found myself actually appreciating everything more by knowing how much effort Disney puts in to bringing the magic to life. I'm glad as an adult you can still appreciate it too!

Security wears a completely different costume, but does work right outside of the park so we saw them often, but definitely didn’t act as security.
    I think the “me too” part was worded weirdly. I think she said that because of how guests treat them in the parks. I don’t think she meant the princesses in their stories would.

      Thanks Katelyn! Yes, I had those questions too! I was wondering how they found them, did they post something somewhere asking for people who used to work for the company? It's interesting to me that they couldn't find people more recent. Seeing the photos they posted of the performers and their costumes it's been a while since the characters wore those. Overall it seems (in my opinion) that performers who haven't been with the company for the past 5-10 years may have been trained differently than I was. I feel like the desire to maintain character integrity is a lot stronger with current performers, even after we've left the company. So those were some things I noticed and wondered too!

    Regardless of whatever opinion I or anyone else has about this video, I appreciate how respectful you are in talking about your opinions and speaking to what you know. It's something you're talented at, and it's one of the things I admire about your content. 😊
    Two thoughts I have after watching the Buzzfeed video and your video:
    1. I spoke with some people familiar with the back end of Park Ops when I worked at WDW, and they did mention there's a team that tracks park capacity and traffic. They said they'll place certain characters around the park or adjust expected wait times to balance capacity if one area gets too crowded. Beyond that, though, I don't know anything about the obscure characters. I don't think I paid enough attention to that when I visited the parks to know.
    2. I've always been interested by how people view character integrity and maintaining the magic. To me, learning about how characters work and what it's like backstage is kind of like learning how the brain works. Even if I know how it happens, I'm still no less fascinated or amazed by it. With Disney, it seems like there's so much that goes on behind the scenes that even if I knew it all, I'd still be amazed by how they're able to create so many memories for people. I'd never want to ruin the experience for someone else, but it doesn't bother me one way or the other hearing how things work.
    Thanks again for an insightful and positive video! Hope you have a great day!

      I think a lot of people who saw that video just didn't understand. Cast members (performers especially) wouldn't have apprecaited them doing the voice out of character the way they did. But obviously the people watching the video thought it was great. So I don't think they really understood how what they were doing was breaking character integrity, they probably didn't know it's even a thing. At least, I'm choosing to give the viewers the benefit of the doubt! Haha

    I was truly saddened by this video because I’ve experienced true magic at Disney. I honestly can't imagine going to Disney and treating the cast members like garbage! They go out of their way to be great to people! I took my 3 younger kids to DL in February for the first time and the cast members were part of what made it so great for them! From the ride attendant taking to my 8 year old about the matterhorn, to Cinderella asking my 2 year old how the velcro on her shoes works. They work so hard every day to make everyone have a great time and deserve a thank you!

    Interesting that you talked about the voice. I didn’t think about it when I was watching the video, but after I saw this I did remember when I met a voice actor who did the voice of a character in front of me and I was never able to watch that show after that because I just pictured him. It’s never happened with any other voice actor I witnessed doing that, but I can see how that can ruin the experience for someone.

My aunt and uncle are both character performers and for YEARS they refused to tell me and my little sister who they were friends with. All my friends and family know what I did, and I don’t really maintain character integrity with them (in person). But I’m SO protective about it with my boyfriend’s nieces and nephews. His mom will be like “mackenzie was ______” and I have to correct her. I just don’t want my experience to ruin the magic for them, if anything I want to enhance it! I’ve seen several videos about ‘Disney Secrets’ and hearing about this one it was definitely terribly mean spirited.
    I loved your comments about gifts being gifts too! The biggest problem with channels like Buzzfeed and a (focused) part of our generation at least on the internet is being entitled. Disney is all about magic and gift giving and kindness. I can’t understand why you’d trash someone like that, especially when they really do their best to make magic for kids.

I didn't like that Buzzfeed made it seem like their opinions were "facts", and that they encouraged rude behavior. As someone who has had to deal with rude, mean, unhappy guests, I can say it's not fun and I can't imagine anyone actually encouraging others to do that. Especially when they were in that role too.

      kenziemacbrown I’ve followed them from a distance over the years and being mean to others or stealing work from small content creators, isn’t something they’re above doing. I don’t like that it’s the kind of world we live in that large companies (especially a news company) get away with things like that and don’t choose to be a positive influence, especially when it’s a website that kids and teens will often visit. But sadly in the recent years, that’s a role that Buzzfeed has more often than once chosen to take. 🙃

    Bless you for this video. Guests don’t realize how much we actually give them. But I am so much LESS LIKELY to make magic if it is asked for. A woman actually said “it’s my kid’s birthday what are you going to do for him” I handed them a button. But the family that was so incredibly kind to me that I just talked to for 30 min who wanted me to write their names on some buttons for them... that family I sent a cake and some special treats from my resort. They came and found me every day after that just to say hello and thank you for the treats. I would give them another week at my resort if I could

    I was taking pictures with my friends in front of the fun wheel in Pixar pier at DCA for a while when one cast member came up to us to let us know that pretty soon they would have to clear the area for world of color. He was really nice about it, and had a nice talk with us about how our day was going. We told him that we really wanted to watch Fantasmic in Disneyland but didn’t get the chance to get passes for it. He said farewell and then we took a couple more pics and were about to leave the area when he approached us and said something great to us. “Hey guys, just remember that dreams do come true.” And HE GAVE US PASSES. My husband and I went to Disneyland for our honeymoon and going as an adult, it's interesting as I can see it through less of a "kids lens" and more of a realistic one. It's still fun if you take away a lot of the "kid magic" and it's honestly, for me, fun to see how they work to make it happen, and knowing they're working hard to make it a magical experience. My husband and i bought mickey and minnie wedding ears, and the woman who sold them to us gave us "Just Married" buttons and we wore them and cast members would tell us "congratulations!" every time they saw them. I even remember wearing our ears and watching a parade and and some of the performers would point at us, make hearts with their hands, and it was so cute. I think a video like this is so pessimistic, yes, it's not all "magical" but it's so negative to try and make it sound like there's a way cheat the system or that there's a "dark side" to working there.

    • @kenziemacbrown

And I'll admit, there are WAY more videos out there revealing actual "secrets" - and more of them too. So I didn't mind that, but I just didn't like how their opinions were being twisted to sound like facts. And that they were encouraging guests to be rude. Cause that's just not cool.

      Having worked in customer service for so long, it's like encouraging customers to whine to get discounts or special treatment. It's the same thing! I get so frustrated with people that talk about "complaining to the right person" in any industry, and hospitality like Disney is no different and I know running the park, especially at peak seasons like when we went, is stressful enough without having to deal with rude guests trying to cheat their way into free popcorn and fast passes. And the thing is, these people working at the park should know that better than anyone; you'd think they would have some empathy for their fellow cast members, even if they don't work there anymore!

    I agree with your view on this. They really do ruin the magic for so many people. Saying to complain to the right cast members in order to get free things or to get ahead in rides is not only unfair to the cast members but unfair to everyone else who is respectful. I don’t get why people think that behaving like that makes them deserving of special treatment when it really should be the other way around. It promotes abusive behavior like manipulation (verbally abusing someone to get what they want). So anybody in support of this really does show their own values as a person...

    I went to Disney World back in March, and when I was in Epcot I saw Mary Poppins. My friends and I ran up to her, and the character attendant had to tell us that she had to go back “to find Bert,” and I practically saw her bracing herself for a bunch of complaints. I felt so bad, and I just said that it was okay and that I understood, and asked if it would be okay for me to at least take pictures of her. She seemed surprised, but said yes and said thank you for asking instead of just doing. And Mary ended up posing for a few pictures as she was walking away! Hi Mackenzie! I’m a big fan of your videos and really enjoyed hearing your opinion on this! I really love to watch Disney videos, and I was just wondering kind of as a former cast how do you kind of decide how to draw that line between what is a fun story to share for your viewers without giving away too much of the magic? I think it must be hard, and I’ve definitely seen other CZcamsrs who give away a lot more about what they did while working at the park. I still find them really interesting, but sometimes I almost wish I hadn’t watched them after because it does take away some of the perception you have. How do you decide for your videos where to kind of find that balance? I think you do a great job doing it! :)

    • @kenziemacbrown
      @kenziemacbrown  Před 5 lety

      Thank you so much! Sorry I just saw this, it’s taken me a while to go through all the comments 😬😂 for me - I ask myself “would I know this as a Disney obsessed guest” (like I was before I worked there) or “has someone else already said this”. I really don’t want to be the first or exclusive source on anything I say. I also try to give my opinion on things rather than talk about how the company is structured. I believe there’s still a way for me to talk about “interesting” things without giving too much away. I also feel like my experience does not entitle me to release private company information. Which to me are the things I was trained on. When sharing stories, I do my best to only share stories that may have been seen by a guest walking by. There are stories I would love to share, but wouldn’t be able to without breaking character integrity. So those are a few things I think about before publicly releasing a video, just to make sure I’m still being respectful. I hope that answers your question ☺️

    I really love hearing about former cast members' experiences working for Disney, and as an adult I understand how the magic works and I'm curious to know the details, but I can also decode the lingo. I appreciate people like you who maintain character integrity, for the sake of those for whom the magic could potentially be spoiled. I've also worked in customer service roles for over a decade, and I absolutely hate hearing anyone being encouraged to be rude to employees. Especially when it's a (former) employee doing it! Like you said, don't you remember what it was like doing that job?! One of my favourite sayings is "whoever said there's no such thing as a stupid question never worked retail." Customer service / guest relations / food service are HARD jobs, and guests/clients/customers really can be both the best and worst part of the job.

      Very true! There were obviously many MANY wonderful guests and I have so many happy memories from working there! But the guests who weren't great, were pretty bad. I think a big reason is due to how hyped up Disney has become, and how expensive it is too. Guests now expect more because they're paying more, and when they don't receive that they're quick to get upset. And the fact they encouraged bad behaviour (complaining, manipulating) is beyond me!

Then, when there, I kindly asked the cast members where and when the characters would be meeting because realtime where and when was slightly off from the app. All cast members were very nice and helpful.
    Except...
    One character attendee, who I asked to take my picture because I was alone, was like "?????" Another cast member who I had a question for was very clearly caught up in a conversation with her friends who were visiting the park (so she wasn't really doing her job).

    I didn’t like the video either but I think when she said the #metoo thing she wasn’t meaning to speak for the characters, I think she meant the princess performers would(cause obviously like they say next in the video, people can be creepy) It was just stupid wording.

    • @kenziemacbrown
      @kenziemacbrown  Před 5 lety +10

      Right. I think I could've done a better job of explaining this part. As performers we're trained to NEVER talk about political or pop culture. I get that some of the performers could share #metoo experiences that they had while working for Disney, but that's not true for all of them. So to make a blanket statment and say "the princesses would say #metoo" isn't true because (going back to character integrity) they wouldn't know what #metoo is and most of them don't experience that in their stories.
      So yes, I totally see what she was saying, but I think there's other unspoken things that most people don't know about (like how as a performer you're trained to never talk about politics and you really shouldn't say what a character would say to pop culture events). It's something where if they said that while they were in character they could've gotten fired.

If you don't want to know, don't seek out information about it & then complain.
