The Not So Fun Side of Working for Disney

  • Don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved working for Disney. But there were definitely some downsides to working for the company. I know a lot of you are interested in working for Disney someday and while I love being positive, I also find value in being realistic as well. Don't worry, this isn't a 20 minute video bashing Disney! It's goal is to enlighten you on some of not-so-fun things you may have to deal with as a cast member. Which to be honest, there's going to be tons of not-so-fun things that come with any job! I hope you guys enjoy and know that I still loved my time at Disney, despite some of the cons of working there!

    I agree with everything you said. I work at WDW and on my last program I had a lot of issues with my specific location and coworkers/management, now I'm back and my only two real grievances are the company's refusal to pay a living wage or give decent hours, and of course the difficult guests. I struggle a lot just as a CP only having to take care of myself, I can't imagine how hard it is for my coworkers who have families and such. I have coworkers who work there full time and live in homeless shelters. It's heartbreaking and with Bob Iger making 40 million dollars a year we all know the company had the money, they just refuse to pay. And some guests are insanely negative and rude and take their problems out on you, no matter where you work you will have to hear someone complain every day and it really affects my day every time, especially when they're sassy or rude to me. I love your vids tho thanks for keeping it real cause theres a lot of false positivity out there about Disney lol. of course i agree with you that there's a lot of magic as well. but i am also not staying for the same reasons as you basically.

      Thank you!! It's hard for me reading so many comments from people who obviously have no clue what it's like for the employees (in terms of pay, getting time off, etc.). I talk so much about how much I loved working for Disney (because I genuinely did), but I'll admit it wasn't always pixie dust and rainbows. I know there's so many people watching my videos who want to work for the company, and I thought it was important for me to make a video talking about some of the "cons" to help them decide if they really wanted to work there. I wanted to leave while I still loved the company, because I know there are so many people who were totally burnt out and started to actually hate it.
      But I totally agree with everything you said! I think it's good for people to question how much the employees are actually making in comparison to the CEO, OR compared to how much they make off of park entry tickets alone! I'm sure our paychecks weren't directly correlated, but I don't think the wage is as competitive as it could be.

      kenziemacbrown I completely agree. Don’t get me wrong, I love it here most days too and magical moments do exist! It’s just that a lot of people come into this company totally blind thinking it’s going to be perfect and a lot of that is due to Disney youtubers, instagrammers etc who hype it up and accuse anyone who points out something wrong of being “ungrateful” or whatever. Disney is a business like anywhere else, there are going to be flaws and bad days and people who suck and everyone should know that going in. And I 100% feel the same, that I want to leave so I don’t start to hate it. Although the CP has a lot of flaws it’s kind of nice to get in, get a taste of what Disney is like and then get out before you’re one of those full timers who has been here 15 years, never advanced in the company and hates it. Again thank you for keeping it real and not being overly negative at the same time :)

    • @kenziemacbrown
      @kenziemacbrown  Před 6 lety +7

      Totally agree! Haha it's like you're reading my mind! A lot of people hype it up because those are the videos or pictures on IG that do well, and I know I do that too. But I was really surprised at what the culture was like when I started working there. Not that it was wrong per-say, but I just had put working for Disney up on a pedestal and felt like I was doing my job wrong if I had a bad day. It's first and foremost a business, which is really what I was trying to say in my first point. There's also a lot that I didn't share in this video about management styles and what the intentions are - but I also didn't feel like it would be appropriate for me to share.
      And yes, it was so nice for me to be able to say I did it, get as much out of it as I could and move on with my life. I had SO many friends who were only there for a few years that hated it. Mainly because there's no sense in how someone advances! People come in with 3 roles and immediately jump into parades and shows while others are there for years and only have one role, and don't do any shows. It didn't used to be like that, and I feel like they way it is now causes for a more competitive environment.
      Anyways, thank you for your support and insight! I won't lie, it's frustrating when I get nasty comments from people saying how uneducated I am or how I have no idea how a business works. I know they have no clue what it's actually like working there as a cast member, but it's nice to know I'm not alone!

    • @amberfirexx9
      @amberfirexx9 Před 6 lety +3

      kenziemacbrown literally same to you 😂 and yes these are all good points! I have learned a LOT working here about business and leadership, every location is only as good as its managers and unfortunately there is a lot of poor management at Disney. Not all but a lot. I don’t work in entertainment but the thing about moving up seems to be similar company wide. I knew people who became coordinators within a few months of getting hired while others waited years and got nothing. Of course some people can be better at their job in a few months than others are in years but that wasnt always the case. There’s a lot of favoritism and such at Disney. Oh and I also totally relate on the putting Disney on a pedestal thing, there’s a lot of false information out there and it’s important to make videos like this that share what it’s really like. So thank you again! It’s definitely great to talk about it with someone who understand cause as you said, people will make judgments and leave comments without knowing what it’s really like. I’ve thought about making a video like yours one day, definitely not till I leave the company lol but these are all points I’d include if I dude

      I make 6 figures and I work at Disney. If you want to earn above a living wage you need to market your skills and work toward a position where you cannot be replaced by a 16 year old with a work permit. Most of this is right on though, except the non profit part which makes no sense whatsoever.

    1. They're not a non-profit 0:49

Including having big heads, small bodies and tiny waists. guest just need to remember that these a real people assisting the characters so of coarse they are not going to look exactly like a cartoon character.

    We have a special needs family. When we got the chance to go to Disneyland, we figured we could manage in a normal hotel room. When we went to the Disney hotel desk, they saw our room wasn't ready yet. There was a special needs room that was open, and they gave it to us in exchange! It was exactly what we needed, and it was a staple for our trip to have a hotel room like that to go back to after an Autism meltdown or Deaf sensory overload.
    That was our magical moment for us, Disney was so amazing to our family and I will never look at it the same again.

      They are rude because they can be. We currently have a society based on ME. ME.ME. ME. Exhibit A: SELFIES. Who cares about MT Rushmore as long as my face is in the pic. Exhibit B: Twitter. No explanation necessary. Part two: Greed. Corporations will throw anyone at the bottom to the wolves if it means they can make more money. Personal story here: I had someone spit in my face and threaten to "knock my teeth down my throat" when I explained to them (a customer) that the item they were looking for DID NOT EXIST! When said customer tried to make good on their threat and I wasn't having it, I WAS TOLD TO APOLOGIZE! I didn't do anything wrong. I was defending myself against a threatened assault! I didn't apologize. I was fired and the customer got a $500.00 gift certificate. People are rude because they know they can not only get away with it but profit by it. A little lie goes a long way.

      I 100% agree! I had a coworker who went to Disneyland for the first time (during spring break too 😬) and was pretty upset that she couldn't stop and watch the fireworks show as they were happening (she didn't like that cast members kept telling her to keep walking). There's a lot of instances where that happens and you definitely have to do your research before visiting the parks in order to get the most out of your time. I think that's where a lot of the frustration comes from - especially at Disney World! People don't know to make reservations ahead of time, sometimes MONTHS ahead of time. Or how long they need to sit and wait before watching a parade or show. It's a huge bummer, but I can completely understand the frustration!

      Exactly! Even something as simple as making fast passes ahead of time can make or break an experience. Since we go so frequently I always try to help people out who are new to it because I want to see them enjoy it as much as I do! Knowledge is definitely power when it comes to Disney parks

    Never thought I'd comment on a Disney-video, but while gordita might mean chubby it's always an affectionate usage-- they still thought you were cute. It's what grandmas call their grandkids, boyfriends to girlfriends, even friends to each other. Imagine it to mean to refer to the chubbiness of their love for you. :)

      Haha thank you! I've been saying I must've done something right if I keep getting comments about how positive I am in a video where I talk about something I "hate"!
      I think when people dislike something and they just go on a rant about how much they don't like it it shows that they're missing a level of understanding. So despite not liking some aspects of my job, I can understand why they happened. Like upset guests, most of the time I can understand what would lead up to them getting angry over not being able to meet a character. So that's probably why is still comes across as "positive" even though I'm talking about negative things because I also explain why things are happening as opposed to just complaining about them!

Walt was going to stop animating right before Snow White because they were doing so poorly and weren't bringing in any money. So, in ways, it is about money and doing what is best for the company. No matter what company it is, you need to also think in business terms in order for your company to thrive and do well. Nothing is 100% all the time 24/7.

    The first point made me laugh. I will say that while Disney vacations can be insanely expensive compared to similar theme parks and cruises, my family often genuinely felt that we were getting better customer service and a better experience at Disney. Disney was the kind of place where I would leave a souvenir at the hotel, cry about it at home, and after one phone call with a hotel manager later, it was being shipped back to where I lived. That’s the level of service they give their customers and that’s why it can be worth it to pay those high prices.

    Props to you for keeping it real! As with any job, even if it's your dream job, not every aspect of it is absolutely perfect or without fault. Especially an entity the size of Disney. The bigger the company, the more room there is for some less than wonderful things to find about working for them (not to discredit or completely overshadow the great experiences we all have with what they have to offer!). It's important to research a company and talk with some people you trust who have a history with them so you know what to expect, and I love that you made this video and expressed what you did. So many of us (myself defs included) are interested in working for Disney and this is some really vital info for prospective cast members. I really feel for you with those body shaming comments from guests or fellow employees, that really sucks and no one deserves to be treated like that, especially at their place of work! But so glad to know you still loved your time there and made some magical memories even if there were some downsides! Thanks again for another great video, Kenzie 💖

    • @kenziemacbrown
      @kenziemacbrown  Před 6 lety +5

      Absolutely! I think the idea of a "dream" job is challenging because even with a job you love there will be things that make it not enjoyable at times. I think what helped me in doing my "dream job" is recognizing that the job itself won't fulfill me and I can't find my self-worth just in my job. Overall I feel like that actually helped me appreciate my time there more! And thankfully the body shaming comments really didn't happen that often. I only mention it because I really don't think it should've happened at all but sadly it was something people had to deal with from time to time.

    • @LaraAkalUMN
      @LaraAkalUMN Před 6 lety +3

      That's a really good way of looking at it!! In the world of performing arts, it's so difficult to try to separate your own self-worth from what you put out into the world. I totally get what you mean by that, and it's been a journey for me as a musician/actor since it's so subjective and what one person enjoys about what I do (or what I enjoy about myself), another person might not enjoy (and vice versa). Unlike when I play piano, which I'm also really passionate about and is more external, my vocal instrumental is literally a part of me! Also with dance, which is a whole other long story I won't bore ya with. It's been really helpful to cultivate my self-worth through multiple avenues outside my line of work like doing different things just for fun without the expectation of mastery, exploring places I've never been, facing my fears, spending quality time with loved ones, meeting new people- I'm still trying to find it honestly, but I'm getting there. Good to hear that those comments didn't occur too frequently and that the positives outweighed the negatives!

This is the society we live in today where we have no respect for others and no filter. Sure I've seen characters that may not look exactly like the movies but they aren't going to! The last time we went our little girl noticed Buzz Lightyear obviously looked different. We explained while in line for a picture that like with Santa he has to be so many places he has people helping him and this is one of his helpers. No reason to try to be rude. Kids are smarter than you think. Give them a little credit. They can tell the difference between a cartoon and real life. I worked for a non profit children theatre company for about 7 years and really enjoyed it for the most part. I know it's not the same as working at Disney by any means. When working at a non profit I definitely felt a sense of achievement with all we accomplished with no profits. We paid for the majority of props, costumes, sets, and equipment out of pocket. And a lot of people don't really understand what that is like. My coworkers and I put everything we had into making plays and shows possible to make the kids in our program shine. The reward was seeing the looks on their faces when they discovered their talents and got to shine on stage. Money cannot buy that joy or the experience those kids had. It was by far my favorite job expect for the fact that I hated my boss. I think people would have a more enjoyable experience at Disney if it wasn't all about the money. It's not fair to families and people in general who can't afford to go. Maybe one day they'll do a willy Wonka thing and have everyone look for golden tickets and allow those winners to go for a couple of for free but probably not since Disney is very much about money. Anyway I hope you are doing well and I hope you have a wonderful week.

      I hope you know how much I enjoy reading your comments! You always put so much thought into them and I always appreciate your insight! I think you completely nailed the ideas and goals behind a non-profit. I think that can be really confusing with Disney because so many people love it and it has a similar effect as a non-profit where it brings people joy. But ultimately their main goal is to make money rather than helping people (even if they help people while they're making money) - if that makes sense! I hope you have a great rest of your week as well!

    • @katyaochoa
      @katyaochoa Před 6 lety +1

      kenziemacbrown aww I'm glad you like reading my comments. I love watching your videos. Sometimes I feel like I have a love hate relationship with Disney it can be really great and other times I want to yell at it. There was a show that recently came out called Disney fairytale weddings and I thought that they would not only look at couples who tied the knot at the Disney parks but also couples who created their own Disney wedding. Of course since Disney is about the money they are probably trying to promote their wedding services at the Disney parks which are really expensive. If Disney wasn't all about the profits the majority of the time I feel like they could accomplish so much more. Like how cool would it be if Disney characters could visit children in the local hospitals. It's a small gesture but it would have a big impact. The character could even read their stories to the kids and just spend time with them. That would be a magical moment.

    • @kenziemacbrown
      @kenziemacbrown  Před 6 lety +5

      Actually there are instances in which Disney characters visit children in hospitals! AND, Disney characters will visit the Give Kids the World Village (where a lot of Make a Wish families stay while visiting Orlando) frequently! They also go above and beyond when partnering with organizations like Make a Wish to make families visits memorable! So yes, overall there is a lot more that they could be doing. But there is a lot they're doing right now too!

    Yes I agree with everything you are saying! Thank you thank you THANK YOU for being so honest and still so positive!!! As for your first reason, Disney not being a non profit, I believe Disney definitely has changed over time. A huge reason being that the Disney family is no longer in charge any more. It used to be ALL about family values and now it’s about a business and what’s going to bring in more money. Doesn’t mean I don’t love going to Disney still and making memories with my family!! I just had to get that out because going on vacations and working there myself has made me become aware of a lot.

      Yes I would completely agree! Especially in talking with cast members who had been there for decades! I only know what it was like based off of my personal experiences, but in talking with other cast members at the time it seemed like it had changed even in just the five years before I had started there. And I would even say it's changed since I worked there two years ago after talking with friends who still work there. Walt originally intended the parks to be "a place where a dad can take his kids", but I do think the parks have grown far beyond what he had anticipated. Anyways, I could go on for a while on this subject! Haha but it is sad to see it change from what it once was.

      I'm sure it cost a lot to keep the park running safe to build shops and rides and pay employees

      also I love your advice videos, I’d love to be a Disney princess soooo bad but Florida is prob too far for me! and also I’m probably too young right now (I’m 15) it’s a dream of mine to be a Disney princess! Also I love how you maintain character integrity!

      You are so sweet, thank you so much Rachel! Those are truly the best compliments I could receive! I agree - there's a lot of negativity out there! Instead of fighting it I figured the best way to challenge it is just by putting out positive content instead! Thank you so much for the support!

    • @kenziemacbrown
      @kenziemacbrown  Před 6 lety +1

      You know, I totally thought Florida was too far for me too! But when I was making the decision at 22, and I knew I would have friends there with me and I wrapped my head around the whole process, it made it a lot easier! I'm sure at 15 that sounds unimaginable! I know for me the idea of college seemed overwhelming when I was in high school. But the transition worked out just fine and it made me feel more confident moving across the country. And I think it's great that you know that's something you want to do at your age! I was the exact same way! It gives you lots of time to prepare!

    • @kenziemacbrown
      @kenziemacbrown  Před 6 lety +7

      I got to do lots of fun things outside of Disney when I was working as a cast member - I took several trips to Tampa, went to the Florida Keys, New Smyrna Beach, etc. There's also other theme parks in the area (Sea World and Universal) that lots of cast members will go to too. But I think a lot of people choose to go to Disney in their free time since we get in for free as cast members!

    Someday soon I want to work for Disney. I'm turning 25 soon but look like I'm in high school apparently. What I am always self conscious about is my body and to hear about body shaming is just awful. I always think that I don't have that look because I am curvy. Oh and your make up is fabulous Dream St. is one of my favorite go to palettes

    • @kenziemacbrown
      @kenziemacbrown  Před 6 lety +10

      To be honest, it didn't happen THAT often, like it wasn't a daily occurrence. I do mention it just because I think it's absurd that it happened at all! I think it sadly happened more often to performers who were in roles where they showed their arms and stomachs (there were three roles when I was there and now there's only two that I can think of). But the majority of the characters are fully clothed and I don't think you'd have to worry about it as much. If that's something you really want to do I would say just go for it! Like I said in the beginning and end of this video, the good FAR outweighed the bad! Despite the downsides I would do it all over again in a heartbeat!

    I can't believe people cannot get their own weddings off.... that just seems insane! I'd be the person escalating that from the manager higher up and saying imagine if you couldn't get your wedding off!?!

    • @kenziemacbrown
      @kenziemacbrown  Před 6 lety +13

      I think most probably do, like it ended up working out for her. But she did have to really work hard to get the time off!

    • @2HRTS1LOVE
      @2HRTS1LOVE Před 6 lety +23

      It's just bad management, ultimately she would have had to quit if they hadn't given her the time off, not like you can reschedule a wedding. It creates unnecessary and expensive (for the company) turnover, leaving them shorthanded, etc. Really stupid, hope that manager got a butt chewing.

      The way she’s saying this is misleading as far as I’m concerned. You can request time off almost a year in advance, it’s first come first serve. What’s wrong with that?

What experiences have you had with handicapped people (physically, mentally, or both) while hanging out with Ariel, other characters, or working as a character attendant? These people are so special and they can bring such a special sense of joy to others, and I was just wondering if you had any interesting stories!
