When I was in college I had a roommate from Japan who was shocked by toilets here. She found it very strange that toilets are pretty much the same everywhere. No special buttons or anything. Another thing she found rather odd was the fact we have beds that just stay. They don't get rolled up, and had to have the whole "make the bed" thing explained to her because it's very different in Japan. Sitting in a chair at the table was also kind of odd for her. She was used to sitting on a pillow or on the floor with a low table. it bothered her so much that she just refused to eat the the dinner table and used the coffee table instead. Oh, and the clothes. She was appalled by the things she saw people wearing (or not wearing) when they go grocery shopping, namely Walmart. People in pajamas, folks wearing what she considered very promiscuous, women not wearing makeup, and people not covering their tattoos.

What surprised me when I first visit Japan were:
    1. Fast train (No train like that fast in my country)
    2. Solar powered houses (Narita area while at the train)
    3. Few cars in cities
    4. People walk fast
    5. People ride bicycles in sidewalks
    6. Yellow markings in the sidewalks
    7. Pedestrians are prioritized in streets when crossing
    8. Clean surroundings
    9. No street sweepers
    10. Polite people
    11. Flip phones
    12. Prompt attitude
    13. Serious work mode
    14. Enjoys beer a lot
    15. Food prices (x4 the price in my country)
    16. Noddle based foods
    17. Almost all Japanese women are pretty
    18. Relax mood of people around city
    19. Just right outside temperature
    20. No cars are honking
    21. Vending machines everywhere
    22. Food always tastes great
    23. English is not spoken by most people

The cleanliness is huge!! My bf and I visited Tokyo last Summer and there are these random electrical boxes or idk, ash boxes just on the side of people's homes and it seemed even those are dusted and not rusting. Also I love you sanitary and free public toilets. I feel like everywhere else I go, toilets are either free and dirty or clean but cost money.

When I was in Tokyo I was a bit surprised by the toilets as well (both traditional and new with 20,000 buttons haha). Also, that smoking is still allowed in many restaurants. The biggest shock for me was that I could go into a convenience store and buy alcohol, and drink it right after paying, even while walking on the street!! I walked past cops and they just nodded and kept walking. That blew my mind. OH, and pizza in Japan... NOTHING like pizza in the USA haha. I grew up in New York, so I love pizza, but the pizzas I found (my friend wanted Dominos) were all crazy with a ton of toppings, really small pies, and very expensive! $15-$26 US for a pie here that would cost only about $6. I ordered what I thought was plain cheese (this Dominos didn't have English on the menu) but when I got it, they had HID THE TOPPINGS under my cheese! And 4 different toppings, each 1/4 something different haha. I love Japan so much, but I think I'll always find things there to shock me!

    • @tlplayer2036
      @tlplayer2036 Před 8 lety +1

Yes, this alcohol consumption thing. :D In Germany you can drink on the street without trouble too. In the US you have to hide your beverage in this ugly brown paper bags that marks you as an alcoholic ^^

Never heard about "squat toilets" before I came to Japan. I was, pretty shocked when I saw the first one.
Also, people being quiet on the train and generally introverted is no myth. Even for a German guy like me (we guys are pretty introverted) japanese people are shy and quiet.
+ the vending machines. Vending machines everywhere, especially for drinks. Was pretty helpful cause I was there in summer 14 and it was hot af.

Suica card really helps reducing the annoying coins in your pocket. The way japanese people dress is very stylish and unique. And also how educated they are is impressive. The greater attention for details in everything from products to interior design architecture or urban planning. The helpfulness and how on each door or corner there is someone to guide you.

How is it that no one talks of Chikan (groping), harakiri forest, isolation, old age citizens, hard work-for what? Also the non willingness of the Japanese to learn English to communicate better? Is this channel biased?🤣🤣🤣
