I am at least as much a 747 lover as are you; my bucket list was to take a 747 to Australia and then get into a cage with a great white shark (done within one week in Nov 2013), then I figured I better ride it as many times as I could until they were retired. I ended up going to Australia 6 times (the last trip 2 years ago out of Van on a 787; who cares) and once to Frankfurt out of Chicago purely because I wanted a ride on a 747-8.
Qantas cabin crews were as enthusiastic about the 747 as am I, and so the long hours over the Pacific were spent in the galleys guzzling coffee and them telling me the many stories they had accumulated. My last descent into LA, a cabin crew member came to my seat (always 75K) and told me to gather my carry on because they were putting me upstairs for easier access to the cockpit for my post landing visit.
Though my flying days are over (no jab for me) I still get to see many many many 747 cargo flights go directly overhead where I live, which is on the route to and from Anchorage to many cities in the US, as well as a Lufthansa 747-8 flight to and from Frankfurt - Los Angeles.
747s are still and will always be the only plane that matters and it makes me laugh when people think twin engine jets are somehow worthy of any mention.
2 + 2 seating in Business class especially for single travelers is a no go....for that amount of money direct aisle access is a must.
Agreed. These days, a business seat without direct aisle access is very poor.

Thank you for this report even 4 years after. I’m heading overseas early next year, three SQ flights and one Lufthansa. Your video got me to change my seat to upper deck, I’m travelling with my husband, so being next to each other is good. We’re doing ADL-SIN-FRA-SIN-ADL. Thanks, Gina
It was good to have a "flight" in the "Queen of the Skies" commentated and filmed by Paul. Interesting to note that the B747-8 is to be used only by 3 airlines in the passenger version. Anyway it is a very impressive looking aircraft... thanks for the "flight" - enjoyed by this "passenger"..
747-800 is just beautiful, thankfully with Lufthansa we will see the queen of the skies for many years to come.

This business class product doesn't over excite me. Granted, the meals look fine, but I don't like the idea of being so close to my neighbour, or having to clamber over their legs every time I wanted to get in and out. The 747-8 does look impressive though. Happy travels and thanks for sharing this report.
I agree, honestly, it would be nice if more airlines ordered more B747-800s, that's what we need more of than A380s-no hate on A380s
I prefer your "direct" approach to your reports as compared to some blogs which are really over the top and unrealistic. Keep the good work.
1-2-1 seating in business class is the only seating configuration that is acceptable to me in 2019.
Glad you enjoyed it. I consider my reviews to be more of a BBC documentary (so potentially a bit dry) rather than the tabloid histrionic style so I'm glad to hear you prefer what I do.
I miss being on the 747-400, as a teen, I am very lucky to be going to europe every 2 years, but what broke my heart was on 2018 when I heard we weren't on a 747. currently 2022, and near impossible to get on a 747 from sydney to singapore.
Although I was able to get an a340-300 to frankfurt, sadly we got bad seats as we were in front of the toilets. Though I still love flying and will never stop.

I flew Perth to Singapore on one of the first “Mega-top” that SQ flew into Perth back in 1989. I flew with my Dad that trip (I was still in high school) and loved their business class.
I’ve flown on a few of them over the years, will miss them when they are gone.

I think the B747-8 is a beautiful airplane. I have such good memories flying on the -200 and -400. Hope they keep flying.
Agreed, although unfortunately I've never flown on a -200. Just the -400 and now the 08 with this flight.
I remember going out to see the first Qantas 747 arriving in Aust with my Father who worked for Qantas. Oh the joy of flying First class in those halcoin days when the upper deck was the First class lounger area.
The Queen is DEFINITELY the best looking airliner in the air 👍👍 and another two thumbs up 👍👍 for your proposed solution to maximum volume public face timing 😂

I loved your comparison between the two versions of the 747. I love these big birds, there's something about them. Even though there are more modern aircrafts atm, such as the 787, the Queen of the Skies is indeed the only one with royal status. Great video, as usual!

10:10 Well actually (Im gonna be that guy), the engine chevrons are found on the 747-8, the 787, and the 737 Max. However, they will not be on the upcoming 777X because Boeing found a better way of reducing the engine sounds without it. I think they should keep them though. They make the engines look futuristic and technologically advanced, but of course, it will always be function over form when it comes to increasing efficiency in planes.
I noted he omitted the 737 Max too (and added, a, series, of unnecessary, commas, throughout) but I do like his videos and enthusiasm, as well as some rare facts about the aircraft I've learned...

Noticed your new arrangement of having the food & beverage menu at the end of the end of the video instead...Dr. Paul, I have to say I love this arrangement absolutely, which I do think you're the first to do so, and it doesn't make the video so long and dull before watching the plane and the flight!!!

I was on this exact plane a couple of weeks ago. Such an old interior design! The screen was impossible to use, but the seats was OK and food great, especially compared with other EU airlines.
Yeah it is an old design! It's bizarre they've put it into their new A350s although I believe they have since revealed their new seat (unsure when that'll go into service - possibly 777X?)

I find myself frequently vasicilating between Lufthansa and Swiss when I go to see my Sister and Brother-in-law who live in Zurich. Usually I fly Lufthansa outbound and change planes in Frankfurt and fly Swiss nonstop home because, well, I want to get home and sleep in my own bed. 😉. So my favorite seat/s on Lufthansa are 1A or 1K ... ok ok yes they’re in First Class. What I like about them is that you’re actually sitting “in front of” the cockpit as they’re all the way in the nose. Add to that, no foot traffic. The First Class Terminal in Frankfurt is amazing! Thank you, Paul, for this review. The next trip to Switzerland, I’m taking my nephews with me so Business Class it will be. Glad to know what to expect. 👍🏻
I don't think that there is anything better than LH F in the nose of the 747-8. Seriously!

I completely agree! and the new wings give it a perfect silhouette (the -400 winglets look a little messy).

LH was slow in ditching the 'angled flat' Business Class seating, but the in flight service and solid food and beverage offerings were redeeming features. It doesn't seem that's the case now which is a shame.
Agreed! I flew in QR's old A330 business suite a few weeks ago and the flight was OK because the service was fantastic. This, on the other hand...

Thanks for the great vision of the updated version of the Queen of the Skies. I certainly agree that the 747 is still, and probably always will be, the best looking passenger aircraft that has ever graced the sky. If current trends continue then unfortunately it looks as though I have probably won't get to fly in a 747 again. It's a long way from the glory days in the 1980s and 1990s when almost every international Qantas flight was in a 747.
Agreed! I'm flying from SYD to BNE this coming Thursday simply to catch a 747 and am immediately returning to SYD. I figure it could be one of my last flights in a 747 as I avoid them on long-haul flights as they're pretty uncomfortable (especially once the A380s are refurbished)..

Sorry.. the early 788 s had regional bus seating but the later ones were long haul lie flats to Mexico /San Jose etc. Apologies but glad you had great time on them.

I flew on a Lufthansa A380 from Singapore to Frankfurt and it's interesting to see that even their latest aircraft has a second rate interior with second rate service. I'll never fly Lufthansa again.
Yep, it's still the same. I look forward to checking out the Lufthansa A350 at some stage, though, as the business seat has been upgraded.

Another awesome video. Still not a fan of seat that doesn’t butt up against the window. But that’s just me. I got bumped up to first and experienced that. I had to lean to my right just to look out the window. But I guess beggars can’t be choosers ! LOL. I’ve flown on 6 Qantas 747s and a United 747 from San Francisco to Chicago Ohare. They gave me a window seat that had no window. Very disappointing. But anyway I love your videos. I can’t wait to get back up in the skies.

I love the idea of giving tote bags instead of the pounch for the amenity kit. I had the Samsonite pouch before and never used it again. But they could have at least made it elegant or use Loqi tote bags with a Lufthansa motive on it. That would have been even nicer 😉

I HAVE FLOWN ON THAT 29 TIMES AND THE 788 BUS CLASS IS LIKE REGIONAL 2/2/2 SEATING AND FLIGHTS TO DLC 3 HOURS BUT AMAZING SERVICE AS USUAL ON GROUND AND AIR WITH NH AND BUS CLASS ALWAYS EMPTY TO DLC (3 HOURS).I LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR COMMENTS...PS NH HAS ALSO AMAZING SERVICE WITH REDEMPTION AND CALL YOU DIRECTLY TO AUSTRALIA WITH ANY CONCERNS /CHANGES AND REFUNDS AND EVEN IF YOU ARE CLOSE TO LOSING POINTS. Of course with out a dought the 747-8 or 747's in my opinion is the best looking jumbo jet of all time.! ICONIC WIDELY RECOGNIZABLE ALL OVER THE GLOBE Even with the arrival of the Airbus A380 it's a new jumbo jet but it can't compete the original 747 in terms of looks the designers of 747 came up with a timeless masterpiece Sorry A380 you guys was super late to the party.! It's a nice looking plane though but it's NOT THE 747

Thanks for the lesson, it's pretty cool to have an upper deck seat! It reminds me of double decker buses in London; I would always race up to sit at the top in the very front seat where you'd get the best view. I never understood why you wouldn't always try get that seat, or at least sit upstairs rather than in the dark downstairs, hehe. Also, I wish you could choose the cuisine regardless of airline or destination. I'd totally choose Japanese food 90% of the time, and burgers and chips the other 10%.

I suspect the USAF will keep their 747-8 well into the 2050s. Their current 747-200s are pretty old!

I can’t help but say, for one of the worlds richest airline groups they seriously need to upgrade their business product. Even on their A350 they have the 2-2-2 business class seat. Like why when literally everyone is doing individualistic suites.

Had much the same experience as you when I flew the Lufthansa 747-8i from FRA to HKG a few years back in business - it was average at best. Shame really, look forward to more of your reviews!

The upper deck on a 747 is the place to be. Apart from that LHs Business Class is outdated in terms of privacy.
Fantastic review Paul, you do the fun side but you are also you give the warts and all.
Those socks once again stole the show ( sunset over Ayers rock at 35000 feet shade?) . Shame the Lufthansa soft / hard product here did not live up to them for a down under person travelling to Europe. Europe is lagging behind once again.
Having said that though, it would be really nice if you could do Frankfurt to the USA in first class just behind the radar dome of the queen of the skies. Such an epic plane.

I don't understand why there is no mention of the seat flat. That is the most important of any business class.

Nice video paul as always. I cant believe how Qantas didnt want to order the 747-8 aircraft. It would have been a great asset for the airline, just like the 400 series.

The A340 is a pretty cool aircraft and I did fly in one with Cathay a few years ago although unfortunately that was before I did flight reviews so there's no camera footage. :(

Personally, I think you're too picky, I still remember DC8s and 727, DC 9, they had None of what you're missing, but found fun in the little things, the simple fun of flying..
I see your point and I certainly recognize I'm very lucky to be flying, BUT, LH are asking a lot of money for their business class product and it's vastly inferior to other airlines. Yes, it's better than walking, but it's also worse than flying with many other airlines. :)

Great report again Paul. Such a good looking aircraft type it will be a shame when they all go. It’s really interesting what you said about the LH service there quite a few reports which seem to portray the airline as hit or miss which is a disappointing as I’d love you try them out. I’m sure the new biz class will be much better. Looking forward the ANA 787 report next. Cheers Jason

Thank you very much for sharing this very comprehensive video. The only thing I dont agree is the the beauty of the plane..just look at this sleek and elegant A340-600 passing behind at the beginning..THIS is the most beautiful aircraft ever built..but of course we know in whose eyes beauty lies:) I totally agree on your assessment of the product: it is mediocre, to say the least..and on top it is more expensive than better products. Having to climb over my neighbour is a no go for me in business class..and this is why - although they are my flag carrier - I have been avoiding them for a over a decade. And also when it comes to beverages: they just invest less then half what EK or QR would invest into their wine cellar (although they are not quite as bad as KLM in this regard). How they got their 5th star in expectation of their new seat in 2020 says more about Skytrax than about LH´s product. I hope the time will come when its worthwile again to fly my flag carrier..even though I still miss the yellow crane:)
Oh, PS: I just flew KLM´s 747-400 AMS-NBO in single seat 1A..a great experience..and i need to get my act together to finish the video I tokk. But what I wanted to ask is: does the 748-800 still have this looong kitchen on the right hand in the front downstairs (with these ugly close to the wall seats on the left used by KLM for premium eco)?

I'd love to sit in 1A on a 747. I've sat upstairs several times although never in the nose.
