Another great video, Paul. Thanks for the upload. It's the closest I get to flying QF these days. You're a brave man flying to Honkers with all the civil unrest going on! It's sad to see streets recently walked on being turned into some sort of battlefield. As you'd be well aware, that central disengaging of the window tinting seems common. Thai, JAL and Etihad do it too making my dawn shots hard to get! Take care out and up there.
I totally agree with your comment about Qantas service vs the more subservient type on some airlines. Travelling J on SQ flights, I found it annoying that aircrew would open the toilet door whilst announcing my surname. Yikes- unnecessary. Thanks for another great video Paul 🤓
I do think you are right about the crew closing the window shades to make their life easier, flew QF127 business in a 747 last year and the crew closed them, turned up the heat and hoped everyone went to sleep. I don't want to sleep during the day, and enjoy watching the clouds.

I agree with you about sleeping during the day. Whenever I return from Europe to the states, or in general fly west to east, and the flight takes place during the day, I never sleep. It is worse for your jetlag if you sleep during the day and your flight is arriving mid afternoon or evening. I can adjust to my destination timezone very easily by not sleeping on day flights because whenever I get to where I am going, I want to pass out from exhaustion, so I end up sleeping very well that night. Great robust review Paul. Love your honesty. The lack of food is really poor but I am sure is a combination of cost cutting disguised as ‘lighter meal options’ to reduce jet lag. Regarding the sunshades, a lot of US carriers simply leave the sunshades closed all the time especially in the business class cabins and even on takeoff and landing (other airlines around the world make you raise them). I agree with the daytime flight posture but most people in the front want to sleep regardless of time of day (I am not one of them unless I have had too many drinks). Looking forward to your Cathay review.

I actually work on 787’s everyday. The aircraft can get very hot on the inside. The flight attendants probably wanted to keep the cabin cool. The 787 also has an automatic cool down mode if the plane gets too hot on the ground with the packs off.
@@bennie1138000 hey mate, I understand that some airlines keep the window blinds down in hot climates to help keep the aircraft cool on the ground but I wouldn't imagine it would be an issue in the air when the ambient temperature is minus 50. :)
Yeah, your suspicions are correct, the cabin crew want you sleepy-bye-byes ASAP. They dim the windows during the day and get the initial cabin service done as quickly as possible. The small meal right at the end of the flight also makes for less work during the bulk of the travel time. I go yoiks at the grim prospect of travelling non-stop from Australia to the UK with this kind of amenity.
I had this out with Qantas management and they refused to admit that dimming the windows was a directive. They claimed it was up to the individual cabin crew. I seriously doubt that as they all do it. What's the point in doing it during the day anyway? Afraid it may fade the carpets???? I reckon we should all tell Qantas we don't want it.
Mr Stewart is always nice to see your video report, honest and to the point. I agree with you that Qantas should do a better job with catering, it is still an eight hour flight ! Thank you (giveaway)
G'day Paul. Thanks for the review. Interesting that the seating on your flight is similar to that of the A330, between Sydney ( just north of the "Gong"), and Manila (just north of "Stralia"), and a similar flight time of about 8.5 hours. I noticed the same issue with the space in sleeping position, and was unable to get comfortable in the fully flat position, due to the cramped space. The food and the crew however were top class, and will use Qantas again, without hesitation. Thanks again for what you are doing on here.
Always great to see another video from you Paul. Seeing the old and new Qantas livery together, I’m liking the new more streamlined one. Thinking Qantas are cost cutting with the business class meal service. Although, do agree and love your observation regarding Aussie culture and it’s influence on Qantas crews...I suppose it’s about “the spirit of Australia” and that’s what they’re providing...(giveaway)
Aluminium doesnt rust (which is one of the reasons it is used for building aircraft and boats) only iron based alloys rust, aluminium can corrode under certain conditions, but exposure water doesnt cause such corrosion CFRP has significantly better tensile and fatigue strength than aluminium, which is why the cabin pressure is higher in the 787 (though the higher pressure would make an explosive decompression even more catastrophic than it already would be with a traditional aluminium skinned aircraft) but one of the major downsides to carbon fiber reinforced plastics in general is the fact that they break largely without warning, with most materials, you can bend it and know roughly when it will break or permanently deform (aluminium bends then locks out before breaking, most steels do the same thing, but they keep bending instead of breaking, wood splinters and gradually weakens before failing) but CFRP doesnt have this characteristic it will keep bending and bending until it suddenly fails, now this isnt a problem on a commercial aircraft, but in other applications where the material will be stressed (such as in ultra lightweight bikes, car parts, fishing rods.etc) this may cause some spectacular failures and yes, finally!!! someone else who despises the fact that the 787 windows can be locked in the full dark setting, whoever thought that was a good idea should be fired... out of a cannon, into the sun
Hi mate, thanks for the extra details about the CFRP. That detail about no warning before cracking is a concern! Wouldn't that potentially be a problem in 10 or so years when these composite aircraft are all a lot older? Agreed about the hopeful demise of the window's designer haha
@@PaulStewartAviation it could be, but I suspect that Boeing has overbuilt the primary structural parts of the aircraft in order to minimise the fatigue stress on the material, as far as I'm aware, an aluminium wing will fail long before a composite wing fails, CFRP is one of the best things to build a pressure vessel from too due to the lack of microcracks (microscopic defects present in most metals after forming that weaken the material) It's likely the 787 will get a longer service life (flight cycles) than any of Boeing's other aircraft because the material is stronger and is more resistant to fatigue stress
The volcano may be “Dukono” it is consistently going off in the eastern part of Indonesia. The ash plume only rises up to 8000-9000ft, at this stage anyway.
I agree with you on the food Paul. I have flown the HKG-MEL leg on the A330 a while ago, in business, and the food, whilst tasty, was limited. The flight I was on is overnight and bizarrely we were given a full dinner service ex HKG and minimal breakfast service before arriving in MEL. I thought it should have been the other way around, as most people would eat in the lounge before departure, then maximise their sleep and wake up to a full breakfast before arrival. Seemed backwards too me!
Great video Paul, really enjoyed it! Qantas have a very decent Business Class although I have to say the second ‘meal’ was quite a dissappointment.. you would expect a bit more! Brendan
You took a single seat that was closer to aisle? Who are you? Don't you know you have to take the "true window with extra privacy" seat, like every other travel CZcams provider. You are a man of the people
I wish Qantas would hand out hot face washers before meals in business class instead of just one thin one at the end. Especially as other airlines do that in Economy. Enjoyed your video and humour :-)
(Giveaway) Interested in your comments re: seat space. How would you compare it with LATAM Business Premier? I’m 6f10 and fully expect that I’m going to find pitch a bit on the tight side. LATAM is adequate.....but I wouldn’t want it to be any tighter :)
Hi Rod, the LATAM 787 has way more leg room as it's an open design while this is more compact. Less space, but more private. Check out my channel for my LATAM 787 video from a few years ago for more details :)
Paul...I flew LATAM biz last week back to Sydney. Quite like their product although I did prefer the A340 product better. Might have to rethink my airline choice to USA. Don’t wanna be cramped on QF biz.
Hey Paul, great review of your trip on Boomerang. Haven’t had a chance to fly a QF 787 yet, but I love their business suite on the A330. Look fwd to your SCL trip. If QF, this could be one of your last flights on a Qantas Queen. Are you up for the Kookaburra flight? I guess that’s what they will call JFK/SYD direct after today.
Cheers Hamish. Yep I can't wait to visit SCL too. South America is the last continent I'm yet to visit (if flying over antarctica on QF63 counts haha). Oohh yeah 20hrs on a plane is a long time, even in business class!!
I just visited the SYD lounge, and to the far right when you enter it they’ve had to ‘expand’ into the public areas although I’m not sure what public area this is. It’s crazy with how big it’s become though.
By the sound of it you'd better pack your own sandwiches if you don't want to arrive hungry. That's a skinflink service to save money. Charge €10 more and give everybody a decent feed Quantas!
I feel like qf use "Well being inflight“ as an excuse to serve less food and encourage rest to disguise cost cutting. For the price of business class fares passengers should be given a choice to eat as they choose, whether that means eating light n healthy or eating your way into a food coma. It's about giving passengers who pay the premium choice. Not dictating what's best for them. Im a qantas supporter, but when you compare what the competition offer in business class catering wise, qantas needs to improve to remain competitive and keep loyal customers happy..
Great to see another Paul Stewart review in my feed! Got my first Qantas flight coming up in less than 8 weeks, granted just MEL-SYD though! (Giveaway)
@@philkitchen5462 Yeah fair enough. I always look for an A330 on that route but only if it's around the same time as the flight I want. the 737 is OK :)
If I’m not mistaken I recall watching one of your videos in a CX A350 (business class flight; HKG-SYD), and you seemed excited about the dim sum for breakfast....
Hi Paul, looks like the menu is exactly the same as my flight on QF43 to Denpasar a few Fridays ago. It was JUST the right amount given it was an 6 hour afternoon/evening flight and I had a late lunch. I definitely would have come out with the same opinion as you had I received the same catering on a mid-morning to evening flight. I also agree with you regarding the grey they used on the plates, I did a double take the first few times. It probably looked like a subtle design detail in Mr. Caon's office, but in a dimmed cabin or under variable lounge lighting it gives a very different impression. My 2-cents is that a darker grey would have been a bit better. As an aside I do fear that Qantas is taking a similar approach as BA was a few years ago in terms of onboard soft product on medium and long haul flights. However given the general improvement and direction BA is going with its medium and long-haul catering and overall product, maybe this is cyclical and I hope we'll see a change from Qantas at some point in the future. Ps slightly off topic but I'm looking forward to an eventual review from you of the newer BA products (which I am guessing will be forthcoming at some point) to see your opinion on how that part of their operation stack up (we won't mention their intra-europe short haul product though)
Yep I think it comes with waves. Cost cutting followed by an outcry followed by a reactionary improvement in services, then cost cutting...etc. I actually booked on the BA A35K staff familiarisation flight 2 weeks ago although because they launched the long-haul flights early, I missed out. Another time maybe :)
@@PaulStewartAviation That may explain your 'random' Iberia Flight then! If I was in Europe I'd have booked on one of those flights between London and Madrid! #tragic.
@@theresnormissing haha yep that explains the IB flight :) It was fun getting onboard the A340-600 although the actual service was humorously terrible (stood on aerobridge for 30 mins and we left 90 mins late with no apology...etc although I wanted the video to be about the A340 rather than terrible IB service).

@@lachmaclean2383 Is Qantas going to make special comfort/catering provisions for the ultralong flights which are part of Project Sunrise?
No idea Karl but I'm sure they can have some sort of system for those flights. It's a real science these days.
Im entering for the PJ’s good luck to everyone
I've got six unused pairs here if you don't win!
I love Qantas from sydney,,,,,,,,,,
Mr Stewart is always nice to see your video report, honest and to the point.
I agree with you that Qantas should do a better job with catering, it is still an eight hour flight !
Thank you (giveaway)
That lounge shower room decor tho - ugh (giveaway)
disaster!
A second full meal option I'm sure would have been welcome by most... I think they cut just a bit too deep....
Agreed
Glad you enjoyed the video Peter. Yep the style of the seat is very private, but unless you're petite, leg room does become an issue.
Aluminium doesnt rust (which is one of the reasons it is used for building aircraft and boats) only iron based alloys rust, aluminium can corrode under certain conditions, but exposure water doesnt cause such corrosion
CFRP has significantly better tensile and fatigue strength than aluminium, which is why the cabin pressure is higher in the 787 (though the higher pressure would make an explosive decompression even more catastrophic than it already would be with a traditional aluminium skinned aircraft) but one of the major downsides to carbon fiber reinforced plastics in general is the fact that they break largely without warning, with most materials, you can bend it and know roughly when it will break or permanently deform (aluminium bends then locks out before breaking, most steels do the same thing, but they keep bending instead of breaking, wood splinters and gradually weakens before failing) but CFRP doesnt have this characteristic it will keep bending and bending until it suddenly fails, now this isnt a problem on a commercial aircraft, but in other applications where the material will be stressed (such as in ultra lightweight bikes, car parts, fishing rods.etc) this may cause some spectacular failures
and yes, finally!!!
someone else who despises the fact that the 787 windows can be locked in the full dark setting, whoever thought that was a good idea should be fired...
out of a cannon, into the sun
Hi mate, thanks for the extra details about the CFRP. That detail about no warning before cracking is a concern! Wouldn't that potentially be a problem in 10 or so years when these composite aircraft are all a lot older? Agreed about the hopeful demise of the window's designer haha
@@PaulStewartAviation it could be, but I suspect that Boeing has overbuilt the primary structural parts of the aircraft in order to minimise the fatigue stress on the material, as far as I'm aware, an aluminium wing will fail long before a composite wing fails, CFRP is one of the best things to build a pressure vessel from too due to the lack of microcracks (microscopic defects present in most metals after forming that weaken the material)
It's likely the 787 will get a longer service life (flight cycles) than any of Boeing's other aircraft because the material is stronger and is more resistant to fatigue stress
"I'll briefly mention the Wi-Fi, which didn't exist" Haha, love that (giveaway)
I laughed out loud at that too. And it is pretty poor form that Qantas don't offer this on international flights...
The volcano may be “Dukono” it is consistently going off in the eastern part of Indonesia. The ash plume only rises up to 8000-9000ft, at this stage anyway.
You may be right. I'm a little sketchy on my south east asian geography :)
Paul, Every time I have chance to experience business class, I check to see if there are AC vents. I watch your videos too much I guess😅
haha
haha
I agree with you on the food Paul. I have flown the HKG-MEL leg on the A330 a while ago, in business, and the food, whilst tasty, was limited. The flight I was on is overnight and bizarrely we were given a full dinner service ex HKG and minimal breakfast service before arriving in MEL. I thought it should have been the other way around, as most people would eat in the lounge before departure, then maximise their sleep and wake up to a full breakfast before arrival. Seemed backwards too me!
Yeah I agree with you about the meals being around the wrong way.
You are a man of the people
haha I would have preferred the seat behind me although it was already taken :)
Great video Paul. I agree that it seems pretty poor having the small meal at the end. You are paying for business class...!
Thanks mate
Five star coverage
Great job Paul! My wife and I have been enjoying your videos. (Giveaway)
Glad to hear my friend. May more coming soon, including a flight from Queenstown to Milford Sound due tomorrow :)
I wish Qantas would hand out hot face washers before meals in business class instead of just one thin one at the end. Especially as other airlines do that in Economy. Enjoyed your video and humour :-)
I'm sure they used to hand out several wet towels , as do most airlines!
I love the video it was extremely detailed.. p.s you remind me of Alan Joyce only taller and handsome lol
Another video
Nice job dude
Thanks Glenn
@@PaulStewartAviation you're welcome bro
Definately my favourite airline blogger, informative and funny videos. Love watching as always, (giveaway) 😁
Cheers mate
Yep I hear both it and the First lounge are getting expanded.
i think its mt Gamalama in ternate island
Nice trip report Paul
"Blown by the wind" 🤣 poor roos
haha
I can't wait for Qantas inaugural flight in April from Brisbane to Chicago. Imagine what that's going to be like
Are you onboard it?
I wish. But it's going to be one long flight
By the sound of it you'd better pack your own sandwiches if you don't want to arrive hungry. That's a skinflink service to save money. Charge €10 more and give everybody a decent feed Quantas!
Will Ford imagine if qantas had a u in it 👍
I feel like qf use "Well being inflight“ as an excuse to serve less food and encourage rest to disguise cost cutting.
Nice video
Thanks
Great to see another Paul Stewart review in my feed! Got my first Qantas flight coming up in less than 8 weeks, granted just MEL-SYD though! (Giveaway)
Enjoy my friend! 737-800?
Paul Stewart indeed. Could potentially switch to the A330 but the timings don’t suit.
@@philkitchen5462 Yeah fair enough. I always look for an A330 on that route but only if it's around the same time as the flight I want. the 737 is OK :)
Was the intro to this video filmed in a room at Rydges Sydney Airport by any chance
It seems like ages since I've seen a Paul Stewart video! Excellent as always. 😁(giveaway)
There's been two others this last month! :)
@@PaulStewartAviation I have been busy all summer so I will go back and watch them! Thanks!
Great video, my good man. After watching this video, I still CY has a better business class product on that sector
I flew back with CX and it's a mixed basket, although unfortunately I can't comment on CX's breakfast as they didn't wake me as requested. :
If I’m not mistaken I recall watching one of your videos in a CX A350 (business class flight; HKG-SYD), and you seemed excited about the dim sum for breakfast....
Talk about cut backs, I would certainly choose an alternative airline. On the food front, probably the worst I have ever seen in Business Class.
Aviation comedy at it's best!
1960s nursing home, being my favourite 😉

Thank you :)
Love the video Paul.. im still to experience business class but some day....
Thanks Tim :)
I want to love Qantas and they're definitely solid and reliable but they're class below the best..
Agreed with all of your points.
I was sick of paying premium to HK while commuting so went for Y class round 300aud each way and was not too bad. Day flight ok and lounge fill up and stay away from plane food
Yeah that's a good price for Y! And for a day flight, Y is perfectly acceptable esp if you get an exit row or bulkhead.
