Nice video. You get to the point not wasting time. Thanks!
That was an absolutely perfect video, thanks a lot!
You are a LIFE SAVER my friend!!!
Really like your channel, man. Thanks a lot!
Thanks for this helpful video!!
Thank you! You're videos are great!
THANKS DUDE LOVE YA!
So great!Excellent tutorial!Thank you
Thanks for the video!
You Sir are a God!!! lol I just release my first game demo for this steam next fest and I needed this!
Thanks, this helped a lot
Thank you. You made it easy!
Thanks Auro!!
Thank you sooo much! I've been pulling my hair last few days because it feels like a lot of the documentation has only one piece of what's needed to go through the process
You are a Life Saver bro!
Well done!
Auro you are my hero, you have made the process of getting my Steam page up SO much easier!! Thank you for all of your hard work!
Happy to hear and glad I could help! :)
You've been a life saver
Oh man! Thank you so much for this video Auro :)
I just prepared a demo for my game Squids for this months steam next fest and uploaded a demo but forgot to hit the review button or let's say I didn't know I had to. So preyesterday was the recommendation deadline to submit a demo and I failed hiting the button now 2 days later. I hope I can still make it into the festival. This Video really helped me to get all this process done way easier and less painful than reading all the steamworks documentations! Thank you again, awesome video and good luck with CoDD!
Happy to hear that! :) You should contact Steam support if you are worried about not getting in. I also missed my deadline for Next Fest but the support was really helpful and let me in!
@@AuroDev Thank you! That's what I did to get in. I'm in but I submitted the demo too late so I hope it will be reviewed in time and not after the festival. That would be a shame :)
thanks for info
Right video at the right time! Was trying to upload a demo yesterday! 😃👍✨
you too?!!!... AWESOME!!! that Auro dev...
Nice! Hope it goes smoothly now :)
Thank you! i owe you my life!
man thank you, you saved a lonely solo indie developer from Italy. I hope you wil try my game when it will be out!
Happy to hear :)
Hey Auro! Man, your videos are so useful that they should be included on Steam FAQ or training courses. It saves us a lot of time. Thank you!
I have a question about Steam and Kickstarter. I know Steam let the devs give steam keys to Kickstarter backers. Also, I know some devs had issues with that. I was thinking to offer Steam keys in a KS campaign and the backers would pay half of the price of the game Steam release (KS incentive), but I don't want to promise backers something that Steam can mess up with. Is it safe?
I think offering keys on KS for half the price might be against Steam's TOS. Iirc they have a clause there that says you cannot sell your game elsewhere for a lower price and similarly you also cannot use discount as an excuse for this unless you apply the same discount soon on Steam also. It's been a while since I read the TOS so it's worth verifying, but yeah I think the half price thing would be problematic. For the same price I don't think there should be any issues.
@@AuroDev Hmm, got it. thanks!
First of all, thanks for your wonderful videos, they make life SO much easier for us newbies... the official Steam documentation seems written for people with a master degree in Computer Science and 10 years experience in game development!
I've just uploaded and released a demo of my game following your suggestions and everything worked fine!
But I have one more, partially related question, for you or for whoever may help: I would like to bring the demo saves into the full game, so that players who have completed the demo can resume right where they left... for this reason, I set up the Steam Cloud saving system so that demo saves should me redirected to the main game directory, but I'm not completely sure I did it right and how to test it.
Any suggestion?
Thanks!
Happy to hear that! You could give access to the demo to one of your friends or make an alt account. Save in the demo and then run the main version to see if it finds the save.
I'm not sure, but I think there might be an issue doing it with Steam Cloud. At least in my case I wanted to use the same Steam Stats feature for both the demo and the main game, but there was an issue since the demo app has a separate app ID - I imagine this will be an issue with the Steam Cloud too.
As an alternative solution you could use a saving feature in your game to store a save file on the player's device and then just make sure the main game uses the same folder for saving. So basically just a normal save system, but make sure not to change the folder between the two versions.
please tell me: inside the steam_appId.txt and the SteamManager do we use the appId of the main game or of the demo?!
Hey I'm watching this for the steam next fest this year! Thanks for it. One question is there no way to play my own demo before releasing to public???
I believe it was possible to test the demo if you have another non-dev account & use a demo key on that acc.
Another great video, thanks. But Im wanting to do a Playtest for a couple of months before I actually releasing my game in early access. Is that possible? Im really confused with Steamworks... Ive tried cancelling the build I uploaded and set with a release date and Ive uploaded a newer version for the Play test version which is currently awaiting review, but I dont know if Ive done it right. When the release date is here, will my newer playtest version become available and not the older main game build I removed? Or will it try to release the build Ive deleted? Or Will the release date fall on its face?
You can certainly have a demo before the EA release. The game also won't get automatically released on the date you have set up. You need to manually press a button to release the game.
@@AuroDev Phew! Thanks m8, thats what I needed to hear! lol
How do I test my demo functionality before releasing it to a game page?
So, what's your take on deciding between a demo and playtest? (Assuming that the primary goal is to gather player feedback)
Demo for quantity, limited playtest for potentially more detailed feedback. I think in the end demo is more efficient in generating feedback, but it comes with additional consideration (f.ex. is your demo presentable enough so it won't scare away potential customers).
Your videos are so helpful. Thanks a lot. But now it would be nice to show how to remove or turn off the demo safely :) Im just trying to figure it out but quite confusing :/
On the main game's page you can just disable showing the demo. On top of that you can also disable the demo app itself.
Hi Auro! Your videos have been great! I have a quick question.
My game has cloud storage for saves. I'm trying to figure out how to best have those transition to the paid version of my game when someone buys the game. I tried setting the install folder to the same name as the paid version, but then if I bought the game I ended up with the main version and the demo version. If I uninstalled the demo, a lot of files got removed, making the game unplayable. Do you have any recommendations on how to best address a problem like this?
Hmmh... Can't think of simple way to handle this off the top of my head, sorry!
sorry for the noob question but I have opted in for the steam fest and should I launch my demo on the same day or can I upload it way before valve makes the fest public? I have set the time 5 hours ahead of the next steam fest start. I have folllowed everything except for clicking on the release app button :O
I believe you can release the demo as early as you want. If I remember correctly, I release it a few hours before the festival and everything worked great.
So when I hit create new app. I shouldn't select this is a free product. And the demo ca be added later.
The most underrated Channel in Game Development History. This channel is a pure GEM!
Auro, I have Two questions on this,
So if I publish a demo, and then if I will publish my main game. Will The Demo page (like) and the Main game (like) will same?
And can I publish the demo for free? and If I publish the demo for free, Then Will I be able to set pricing for the main version of my game?
Thanks :) I'm not sure if I understood the question right, but the demo lives within the main steam page. The demo will always be free and you cannot put a price on it, but you will be able to set a price for the main game, even if you have a free demo available.
@@AuroDev Thank you So Much
I'm not interested in the topic, so I'm just here to see you and tell you that I really like that zoom in/out effect used between your footage.
Cool, thanks for the feedback! :)
1:48 Great video Auro. But I wanted to post or manage announcements but I couldn't. I got an error. Do you have a tutorial for that?
No tutorial for that, sorry. I would try contacting Steam support. I haven't had issues posting announcements.
Thank you.@@AuroDev
Awesome video, thanks! When I saw the thumbnail I thought it was Elon Musk doing a tutorial about Steamoworks :p
Hah :D Thanks!
2:15 Apparently you DO need to upload all the graphical assets, even if they say they're not required. Valve rejected my demo page because it didn't have the assets they clearly labeled as optional!
(Just salty and needed somewhere rant)
Interesting... Not the first time the instructions are confusing over there!
Hi Auro I wanna ask you about upcoming October Steamfest 2022. Registration are closing at 21.july and i don't have finished demo yet but i wanna be register is it possible to skipping that step and not upload anything and upload when demo is ready or you have to upload something and than you can update later on before October? Do you have same issue with this? Thanks
I don't remember all the steps exactly, but from what I remember, you don't need to have the demo ready when registering so you can totally just register now and update the build before the actual festival starts.
Ok I tried to update my Playtest build and I cant seem to do it. I packaged and uploaded it, but its not showing up in Streamworks anywhere. And when I go into "Your Builds" and select default and Preview change, it just says "Current and next BuildID are identical". I have no idea what's going on.
EDIT: Its ok, I tried it again today, the exact same way I did yesterday and it just worked. I guess it was just a bad upload day.
where can i find the depot id of the demo? do u have any video about making depots? im finding that confusing in steamworks(the whole thing is a labyrinth to be honest)
I don't have a separate video for that, but there is a separate "Depots" section in steamworks (under the same menu as "Builds") where you can create a new depot. The demo has its own App Id and due to that its own depot ID (which by default is just App ID with the 0 at the end turned into 1).
Hi, how to test my demo before released to customers? I uploaded the demo build to Steamworks and set everything correctly (default depot branch etc.) but I don't know how to test it from the steam app because all I have in my steam library is my main game(not the demo), but I can't play it because I don't upload main game because I need test demo, not the main game. Do I need to upload the main game too ? Is it possible to test the uploaded demo before I send the demo store to review and the demo build to review? I'd be grateful for any hint :)
Ok, now I know. Developer cant test demo because have full version in library . Solution is create another steam account and use demo key for testing and for this I don't need page and build revieved or released
@@RoboDev-mn1gg Good to hear you figured it out! That's how I did it too :)
Do i have to fill all depot n build on steamwork settings? right now, i don't have full game, only demo game
Yeah, the upload process for a demo is the same as for a full game.
Hello! Thanks to you I was able to upload the game, but I had first made the page and then uploaded the complete game, if I add a demo, do I have to do the whole process again?... I mean the page
Demos don't need their own Steam page (unless you want to) so you don't need to do the whole process again. But many of the steps to enabling a demo are similar to creating a normal steam page.
Hey man thanks for the help. Do you have any idea what the process is for updating the demo? I uploaded a new build and set it to the default branch, went through an authentication process and didn't seem to update the demo. What am I missing? Do I have to submit it for review again? It doesn't give me the option to do that anymore. I really need to fix these bugs in my demo lol
I would make sure the version you uploaded was actually the new build and then also make sure to restart Steam before testing. That should work if you are setting the new build to default branch.
I eventually figured it out man. Thank you!
Thanks, everything is done according to your method, but when our game is added you click, and it sends steam to the main page...
Do you need to make a new depot? and a new folder on your computer? or do you just use the one from your main game?
You can use the same files (& same folder), but the depot ID is different for the demo app.
@@AuroDev also I guess the app ID is different? Thanks I got it working.
Thanks...do demos get visible reviews...will they be on the real game ?
As far as I know, demos can't be reviewed.
@@AuroDev thanks
It is said that to participate in Next Fest, it is necessary to submit the demo version ready for review by August 25.
Even my demo version is not finished yet. If I submit a demo for now, can I update the Demo in the future?
Also if I upload the demo can others somehow access it? I don't want it to be visible.
You can submit the demo for review and still update it later whenever you want. Submitting the demo for review also won't make the demo public - you need to separately publicize it.
@@AuroDev Thank you so much!
do you pay extra for the demo AppID?
Nope, it's free!
So, what I'm confused about it is how do we avoid needing to post a build of the parent app when we only want the demo to be available?
The demo has a different app id so you can just upload a new build for the demo id.
@@AuroDev I think I ended up figuring out my problem right after I asked my question lol. It didn’t occur to me that I could simply release the store page of the parent app, without having to release the game lol. Appreciate the response though!
That was easy let's see if steam will approve me, thanks for your kindness
Fingers crossed! :)
It felt a bit complicated but on the other hand I'm a bit impatient LOL.
Hello, I followed your guide but then I try to launch my Demo no files are downloaded into the folder :(
I would first make sure that you are not launching the demo through your dev account (you'll need a separate steam test account with the demo key to test the demo). That account owns the main game so it cannot launch the demo app and will instead try to launch the main app. If that's not the issue, I would make sure you have uploaded the build properly and that the build is set to the default branch.
Hi, I did everything as in video, but after build review they send me this message: "Failure:
Your build has failed our review because it doesn't launch on Windows using the Steam client, and a "missing executable" error message appears.
No files are downloaded through Steam. Please ensure that you have uploaded your build, that you have added the depot containing your app's files to both the Developer Comp and Store/Free packages, that you have set that build live on the "default" branch, and that you have correctly configured your launch options."
i had a dog named bomi (spring in korean). anyway, if you didn't find the answer yet (i hope you have), you need to go to app admin then steampipe then configuring depots and make the operating system Windows + Linux + Steam OS.
So the demo is a separate game with a different app id
Yep!
Thank you so much for helping fellow developers! God Bless you bro!! in Jesus Christ All Mighty Name! Amen!
My game shows as 4.5GB, but when I try to download from the Steam store page, it shows 0GB and does not load? Any idea how to fix this? Thank you!
Hello, have you solved this issue? I have the exact same problem
@@MertAliBarlas yes. I had to create a developer key, create a new steam account, and download the game on the new account. When you upload updates, just upload a new build to the original Depot every time, and then you can set the specific build in the build section.
