Thank you for the wonderful review. Does the HDR not look washed out in Destiny 2 on this monitor. Especially on EDZ, I tried SDR and then HDR and it looks very dull and washed out. Thank you for touching on PWM and the minor brightness fluctuations! I am extremely sensitive to flicker of any kind (chronic migraines). I'm fairly certain another monitor that was PWM free was causing me issues and I couldn't understand why. I believe it had the same minor brightness fluctuations as the AOC Q27G3XMN. Did you ever make any comparison videos regarding the native color depth display and an FRC? I always wondered how huge is the difference in the colors in terms of gradients and the color space coverage. I've seen a lot of monitors using 6-bit+FRC or 8-bit+FRC to achieve 10-bit color depth. Also, do you have any plans on making some new buying guides? I mean like choosing the best monitors for editing, gaming, mixed and so on... Indeed, I have the same question that someone has commented on, and it is that I assume you are using the Q27G3XMN/BK version sold in Europe. As someone who has the USA version, I notice that your OSD has slight differences, such as "Adaptive Sync" being named "AMD FreeSync," or that the SRGB restriction does not work on your unit (similar to the unit from TFT Central, but not on Rtings or mine brought from the USA). Additionally, it seems that you suffer from the red tint that I see affecting European units more, something that my monitor shares is the tendency to have dim areas, even less bright than they should be. Speaking of brightness, my unit, like Rtings', is less bright at all levels (peak of 1100 and minimums of 40).... It seems very strange how one version or the other can vary so much despite being the same manufacturer and using the same panel.
PS: As someone who has their old Samsung 1080P 144Hz QLED VA monitor next to me, it's curious that my new monitor is actually worse at handling black transitions than this older one... but on the flip side, it has much less overshoot than the old Samsung... not to mention bright transitions (AKA RGB 50 to RGB +50), which are much faster, at least to the eye and in the UFO. The contrast is much superior, and light leaks on the AOC are negligible compared to my old Samsung, all of this without using local dimming. Question: between this panel and the one that comes with the MSI you recently reviewed, which do you think is the better implementation of a VA panel in terms of pixel response times?

    • @TotallydubbedHD
      @TotallydubbedHD  Před 4 měsíci +4

As you said, I can only assume it's the EU version. But I'll clarify and also ask the question to AOC about the differences (if there are any) between the two versions. Clearly by your comment there might be, which would be odd and concerning.
As for your question: I'd say this VA implementation is better than the one I reviewed from MSI (presume it's the budget 240hz 1440p you're referring to). Not only due to the response times but also the minimal overshoot and smearing.

Its not close to any of my OLED displays but it was also way less than those and he also cant burn it in. Had to calibrate it though as it also had the red tint everyone was saying but after that it was great. I cant believe we are getting HDR monitors at this price point with these specs and I hope we can see more companies get into this space. We need more mini LED options at all price ranges ( although I do think the more expensive ones are kinda useless seeing as QD OLED and WOLED are far better overall but burn in is real and some people use their PC for other things than just gaming ). It this EU or US version? RTings had great sRGB accuracy while TFTCentral had the same results as you. I suspect there are monitors which are not calibrated or have firmware issue while others, especially the US versions, have this sRGB mode working correctly (and also have lower minimum brightness). It's also worth mentioning it has no USB ports, so you can't update firmware!

Just to point out one minor error with the review; The low input lag mode is automatically turned on when Freesync/G-Sync is enabled. That's why the option becomes greyed out, it doesn't turn it off.
That being said, gsync in general adds a very small amount of input lag (1-2ms according to google), but that's not unique to this monitor.

If you have this monitor, could you confirm this information and what should we do to reduce the input lag. Maybe it's the frequency or something else that can be adjusted. Got my unit (UK version). Can confirm sRGB does absolutely nothing. There's also a red tint on the entire screen, which I found easy to fix by changing the colours to R28, G45, B42. I'm curious of if you can try these settings on your unit and let me know what you think? I believe all european units have this red tint issue.
Also you mention the temperature is 5500k, is it possible this is due to the red tint?
Overall I'm not sure what to think of this monitor. I upgraded from an old TN panel and I didn't find myself especially blown away. I've tried some IPS panels in the past and I remember thinking the colours looked extraordinary, but with this AOC, I'm finding myself quite unimpressed. Contrast ratio is great, and black smearing is a non-issue for me on this monitor, but the colours just seem.. okay? I don't do any image editing, just gaming but I was thinking about switching to an IPS like the Dell G2724D. Maybe the more accurate colours are what blew me away on IPS monitors I've tried in the past.

The thing of doing R28 G45 B42 is that you are limiting the colors to SRGB space, and, for people that are accustomed to saturated colors like me, when I use the SRGB constraint the colorimetry becomes... boring, yes, the colors become more realistic and such (plus the color temperature gets right and the red tint that in my US unit is already low, disappears), but it's just not visually appealing to me. I imagine that for someone who has been in the SRGB color space for a long time(due to TN), using that configuration just doesn't have any "surprises". Have you tried the DCI-P3 clamp ? if that works, According to Chinese reviews the color are accurate and covers like 93% P3 with a delta E of 1.5 average... maybe you can get a better sensation with that, even if the color of SRGB content are not that accurate (oversaturated).

In that case, I would rather look for an IPS, Mini LED backlight or an OLED if you would want to play action or competitive games and also have HDR for some reason. Sure, it's hard to combine HDR and a clear motion on a budget. I've seen even more expensive VA panels having terrible smearing and motion blur. They're more suitable for 60Hz max like a TV, because of the deeper blacks.

UK is getting shafted once again when it comes to monitor pricing. This monitor in the US went on sale for $240 and now sells for roughly $280 while we have to pay here £350. I cannot say its that good of a deal at that price, considering something like AW3423DWF can be picked up at anytime for around £670 (10% coupons can easily be found). Guys the "Minimal invers ghosting" and Smearing on VA Pannel is not a joke or a thing you can work with.
Trust me, if you buy a VA as me, you will keep it and you'll regrett or you refund it ( i refund it, i had a philips).
On VA the ghosting may not seems so bad but when you see with your own eyes will be a big diference.
Everything that has black, in the text will leave a trace after it, or at best it will seem like a blur. And to reduce the ghosting you will have to adjust the settings, but it will look terrible, but you only can reduce 5-10% depends of the monitors.
This will be even more obvious if you come from a TN or IPS panel.
I do not recommend for those who want to play at a good quality, and since you want 144hz-240hz you want to do it.

@@TotallydubbedHD I didn't test the monitor, I tested another one that had a review from you: philips evnia 25m2n3200w, where you said that you can use the faster mode where it has the least ghosting, but in fact the ghosting on the faster mode is unusable, you have to you say that it cannot be used for competitive gaming, ghosting also affects browsing, the VA panel comes with this disadvantage.
There are a lot of clips on CZcams where they say "Don't buy monitors with VA panels". You are right when you say that not all VA panels are the same, but come with a comparison between them to know how serious it is, so that those who want to buy should choose the one with the least ghosting. If it has good response time and low input lag but has ghosting, it's like saying you have a car with a 500hp, 400 NM engine but it's limited to 100hp.

Well, I have the Q27G3XMN here now and honestly, if you don't care about potential burn-in or slightly worse text readability, buy an OLED. Any LCD is far, far behind any OLED monitor. This one is cheap with good contrast and good response times (for a VA), but angles are terrible. With local dimming enabled, desktop work is really bad and text on dark background is extremely washed out. It's bad especially in corners. Colors are terrible washed out, because of the combination of viewing angles and gamma shift... local dimming only makes it worse. Plus there is that sRGB bug, which is on my unit as well. sRGB mode does literally nothing. Another thing I found is that even local dimming set to LOW is way too much for normal work and low setting also locks you out of some settings in OSD which I absolutely don't understand why "medium" doesn't lock you out, but low does... Honestly I don't know if I'll keep it. It's cheap, so maybe... but it's more likely that I'll send it back.
