Gene Wilder - Pure Imagination

lyrics:
Hold your breath
Make a wish
Count to three
Come with me
And you'll be
In a world of pure imagination
Take a look and you'll see
Into your imagination
We'll begin with a spin
Travelling in the world of my creation
What we'll see will defy explanation
If you want to view paradise
Simply look around and view it
Anything you want to, do it
Wanna change the world?
There's nothing to it
There is no life i know
To compare with pure imagination
Living there you'll be free
If you truly wish to be
If you want to view paradise
Simply look around and view
Anything you want to do it
Wanna change the world
There's nothing to it
There is no life i know
To compare with pure imagination
Living there you'll be free
If you truly wish to be - Hudba

Did you know Gene Wilder was hesitant about this iconic song? Because he felt he wasnt a singer. Turned out to be one of the most incredible, memorable songs in Family Films.

Watching the new Wonka actually makes this song much sadder to me. When he first sings it he is full of joy and inspiration, but the older version of Wonka is almost resentful and this version he seems almost exhausted living in this world he created.
When you take the book/Depp version’s backstory into account it gets even sadder. Wonka got too trusting and let his recipes get stolen, stopped trusting anybody after that
@@mrcritical6751as he should be. I hope the new Wonka films don’t change that. It’s a big part of his character how he gave so much to people, he gave them a new lease on life and they repaid him by taking away the one thing he held most sacred in the world. And just used it for money, not even to spread it like he wanted to. It plays into how Charlie makes him believe again and ensures him he can finally trust someone with his life’s work.
A reflection of the ultimate tragedy of the human existence and reality
@@mrcritical6751 that book taught us to never put your whole trust into people
It's sad how lonely mr. Wonka is.
I think that his sadness reflects one of the main themes of the movie. If you live purely in your own imagination you'll be sad. You have to have others to share it with.

Gene Wilder may not have ever known it. But this film gave hope to so many kids in every hood/barrio/ghetto. I grew up with nothing, & like Charlie with family everywhere.... we struggled. I remember as a kid being in awe if I had ever seen anything outside of where I grew up. This movie motivated me to travel & see as much of the world as I could. Pure Imagination is what I play anywhere I put a foot on (Machu pichu, Guatemalan ruins, Scottish Highlands, walking through Moscow). This ghetto kid never would've imagined seeing any of this. RIP Gene Wilder.......you inspired this Charlie to see as much as he could in a world of pure Imagination.

To me it makes me feel happy, sad, hopeful, faithful, curious, imaginative and mysterious all at the same time. The way Gene Wilder performed this, from the way he sings, the lyrics, and its meaning, and his facial expressions, especially near the end just have this mysterious, and hopeful vibe to it I can't explain. Ever since I was a kid and first heard this, this magical song touched my heart and opened my mind. And I always thought that the look on his face near the end while he is singing, had something behind it. Like he was always lonely, and had a rough childhood. There was always something so wondrous about this Willy Wonka, yet somewhat mildly sinister or dark as well.

“We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams”
Willy Wonka.
Why does this make me want to cry?
Actually it was from the 1873 poem Ode by Arthur O’Shaughnessy
We are the music makers,
And we are the dreamers of dreams,
Wandering by lone sea-breakers,
And sitting by desolate streams; -
World-losers and world-forsakers,
On whom the pale moon gleams:
Yet we are the movers and shakers
Of the world for ever, it seems.
With wonderful deathless ditties
We build up the world's great cities,
And out of a fabulous story
We fashion an empire's glory:
One man with a dream, at pleasure,
Shall go forth and conquer a crown;
And three with a new song's measure
Can trample a kingdom down.
We, in the ages lying,
In the buried past of the earth,
Built Nineveh with our sighing,
And Babel itself in our mirth;
And o'erthrew them with prophesying
To the old of the new world's worth;
For each age is a dream that is dying,
Or one that is coming to birth.
A breath of our inspiration
Is the life of each generation;
A wondrous thing of our dreaming
Unearthly, impossible seeming -
The soldier, the king, and the peasant
Are working together in one,
Till our dream shall become their present,
And their work in the world be done.
They had no vision amazing
Of the goodly house they are raising;
They had no divine foreshowing
Of the land to which they are going:
But on one man's soul it hath broken,
A light that doth not depart;
And his look, or a word he hath spoken,
Wrought flame in another man's heart.
And therefore to-day is thrilling
With a past day's late fulfilling;
And the multitudes are enlisted
In the faith that their fathers resisted,
And, scorning the dream of to-morrow,
Are bringing to pass, as they may,
In the world, for its joy or its sorrow,
The dream that was scorned yesterday.
But we, with our dreaming and singing,
Ceaseless and sorrowless we!
The glory about us clinging
Of the glorious futures we see,
Our souls with high music ringing:
O men! it must ever be
That we dwell, in our dreaming and singing,
A little apart from ye.
For we are afar with the dawning
And the suns that are not yet high,
And out of the infinite morning
Intrepid you hear us cry -
How, spite of your human scorning,
Once more God's future draws nigh,
And already goes forth the warning
That ye of the past must die.
Great hail! we cry to the comers
From the dazzling unknown shore;
Bring us hither your sun and your summers
And renew our world as of yore;
You shall teach us your song's new numbers,
And things that we dreamed not before:
Yea, in spite of a dreamer who slumbers,
And a singer who sings no more.
“If the good lord had intended us to walk, he wouldn’t have invented roller skates.”

Probably by the fact that gene wilder is dead....the music and the words are beautiful and that it makes my heart cry with me 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Even before he died this song always gave me left my feeling melancholy
The man singing it had such a beautiful soul. He didnt want to tell people of his sickness because he didnt want a single person to be sad and quit believing. I kind of think they found the real willly Wonka and made him an actor because he made everyone smile
The look on his face at the very end always gets me.
Both the music and his voice most likely give you this feeling. To me it's more so a song about Willy himself. He's not the person he always shows on the outside. As we see towards the end of the movie and how he seemed quite disturbed. Willy was reclusive, neurotic, controlling, and had trust issues. I think he was actually quite lonely. And I think this song captures more than just some feeling of wonder, but also is a bit bittersweet because behind all the joy and bright colors is actually kind of lonely and sad man. We can just look at the title of the movie, the movie is just as much about Willy as it is the factory.
That line, "living there you'll be free, if you truly wish to be." it's just soul-crushing. Because he's right. There's nowhere else we'll ever be truly free than in our own minds. That's how hellish this world is. Wonka got that. That's why he was looking for a kid to inherit his creation. Because adults are soulless husks, who've had their imaginations gutted from them by capitalism's nightmarish material conditions & forced attritions for the sins of our fathers. Wonka appeals to us because he's beyond all of that nonsense. He is what we all wish we could be.
Underrated comment.
I'm 51 yrs old and I've seen this movie countless times. This part always gets to me. Always wanted one of those buttercups too!!!

Fun fact, gene wilder biting the flower cup was completely ad-libbed, the item was made of wax and it was such a funny act they kept it for the final cut. Gene, what a brilliant man.
A piece of my childhood died today.
+Tracy Smith same
How so
Anas Uchiha The dude playing Willy Wonka died.

RIP Old friend.
I just watched this a week ago and thought to myself, "he's still alive right?" I was relieved after checking. Now, he's gone. Rest in peace Mr. Wilder.
Quite sad, indeed. We sometimes forget that these great actors are still alive, until we just open google and just see the headline.
So you jynxed it, is what you are saying?
He's had Parkinson's for three years. Won't really change anything if he's still living.
I think you mean alzheimers.
yes
I think Gene Wilder would have loved Timothée Chalamet’s performance as Willy Wonka. Because I have a feeling Gene was smiling down upon Timothée as he sang Pure Imagination. 💜

You know that our goat Gene didn’t ever want a prequel or sequel of Willy Wonka, right? That’s why they waited for him to die before they announced the new one. It’s the only reason I don’t plan on watching it.
My favorite line is, "If you want to view paradise, simply look around and view it." It's all around us, every day.
Did anyone see violet and veruca fighting when they were walking down the stairs?
Wonka shuts that shit down asap though
Yes I saw them
SportaRose 10 in the modern version they say it only to gain a person who would “route” for the other one so theyd win, if they seem nice and friendly wonka might choose them over the others in their mind
I did
Rebeca Ibarra no way really!!??
Roald Dahl said that the music was too upbeat but now it is the most iconic song of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
Not only that. But he also dislike Gene being Willy and had someone "better" in mind.
Appearntly he didn't like the movie so much. He didn't want anyone to make his 2nd book into a movie.
(course he never said anything about a prequel) 😆
Roald Dahl just needed to stick to writing children’s novels. The man did not have a clue when it came to cinema. He didn’t want Gene Wilder as Wonka and he crushed it as Willy Wonka. Yes its true they did take a couple of liberties I didn’t agree with but as an overall product, the movie’s legendary status still stands the test of time here in 2022. And the remake while more faithful to the book does not compare to the original movie and a big reason for that is the disparity between Wilder’s superior performance and Depp’s Wonka is too vast to quantify.
@@kenalier Well it's his story to do with. Same could be said with Stephen King and how he disliked Stanley Kubrick's version of The Shining.
If someone wants to dislike another's version. Let them. (even if other's liked it)
@@Dremag_Gaming That’s perfectly fine. My point I’m trying to make is literature and cinema are two very different things. They have different elements. Which is why what can work for a book probably will not work for a movie and vice versa. He opines from the mindset of a writer who could not understand the vision of cinema. Even the famed Ian Fleming didn’t think Sean Connery could be James Bond and he’s the signature 007 of the film series. So he can have whatever opinion he wants and then I have the right to analyze his opinion and choose to agree or (in this case) disagree strongly.
@@Dremag_Gaming Dahl wanted Spike Milligan for the part. He didn't like the overall changes this movie had from his book. Mel Stuart had him to write the screenplay. Dahl felt that this film put to much emphasis on Wonka instead of Charlie.
After watching Wonka (2023), whenever I watch this scene, I love to think that the way Gene Wilder sung the song and his facial expressions, shows us that he is proud of what he had made as a chocolate maker including his factory, and his dreams that became reality. You know just some guy who made a legacy and just admiring all the things he had done, probably remembering his Mama, Noodle and friends! 🥲❤
I like how the Wonka version was talking about interacting with people then we hear the Gene Wilder version
Never watched Willy Wonka, but I remember hearing this once when I was younger. I never knew the title and because I somehow only heard it once, I eventually thought my mind was making up stuff.
It's a whole new feeling when you realize that that tune you were humming wasn't a mistake of memory and was actually a real song... I can now finally sleep in peace knowing I found the source of this tune after all these years😭
It's a great movie. I still enjoy watching it
Everytime I hear this song I cry. Not because the man died it just reminds me of what could've been.
Sorry cant relate
communism gaming lol just can't relate I cry from the just sound part of the song it can be used to create a sad animation
@@drkirby-zc7gd im talkinf about his name lol
mad dog really? “sad animation” lmao
Every time I hear this song I cry too I really don’t know why though

The Masks Salesman haha
I can't 💀💀💀
The Masks Salesman This got me good because that’s the only thing I ever send to any of my friends
polysynth my classmate showed me a cursed Phineas and Ferb photo of Isabella and Phineas. Will never be the same again 😳
I’m surprised those kids aren’t in tears at how beautiful and well-put-together the chocolate garden is, it must have been breathtaking to run out into the unknown like that! Looks marginally more organised than Fyre Festival.
Gene wilder is the best wonka ever can’t beat him
RIP Gene Wilder (June 11, 1933 - August 29, 2016), aged 83
You will be remembered as a legend.

He’s would have been 90 years old this weekend
It’s odd that today is his birthday and I was thinking about this song just now.
I wish he lived to see the new Wonka movie
Rip gene wilder giving generations good memories, and a lot of laughs.
No CGI and Hand made imaginary shit like this is amazing
I agree
Dude it was the 1970s :-: but still it look goof
@@randomnoobie9662 of course you have a fork knife profile
We’re running out of land on earth to film movie scenes, thats why we use cgi. It’s cheaper and requires no land
Totally agree. So sick of CGI. Even if the props aren’t super realistic it was just a different feel.. I’d rather see some actual props instead of computer generated nonsense.
1971! What a set that was, still to this day this song evokes deep emotion. It's uncanny.
R.I.P., Gene. Thank you for this timelessly beautiful song and all your very special films.
Ever since I watched this as a child , my dream was to find those candy cups that look better than candy almost like a sweet plasticky texture or edible wax but melts in your mouth with a refreshing tea drink inside .... I'm still searching after 12 years...
Edit: okay turns out he had to eat wax and keep chewing it till the take was over and I guess my childhood is ruined 😂
You may have a better shot at finding the fountain of youth.
@@HybridSpektar I dunno, maybe a really firm taffy would work.
Omg sameee!!
He actually ate wax for that scene

2:45 always pulls my heart strings. ❤️
I love that part❤
This song dives so deeply into my childhood. I can't listen without crying. Our world has deviated from this so much. It's sad really. This is what I want for all future generations. Their imaginations are being stolen from them.
I'm not saying Charlie and the chocolate factory is bad but Johnny Depp willy Wonka doesn't hold a candle to gene wilder willy Wonka.
The only thing Charlie has is that it's more faithful to the book than Willy Wonka
Well I'm saying it Charlie and the chocolate factory is horrible
De'Annah Mitchell ...
Don’t you mean hold a *cane*
I know this is 2 years old, but I think if they were trying to create it like this one, Johnny Depp would have been great in this role, I know he's a really nice guy in real life
looping this for the rest of the week / month / year / decade 🌈🌈🌈🌈
