PORTALS Have Made Their Way Into Train Game

- Cosmic Express Part 4 - train tracking with portals. It wouldn't be a puzzle game without some sort of teleporting mechanic. This marks the beginning of this game's difficulty ramp, meaning we've got to start pulling out the big brain strats.

Cosmic Express is a puzzle game where you must connect the entrance and exit with train tracks, picking up aliens and dropping them off at their houses. Simple concept, extremely difficult execution. Explore multiple galaxies, and transport all species of alien to their homes!

The reason the first level in Perseus had two different planets was so that you would realize they were portals, and not just another random block, like a black fountain or something.
This game is just turning into "5D Train game with interdimensional time travel"
It would be dope if you can teleport to other levels, and the previous levels' solution blocks your current solution
Gotta move my train 2 spaces in the past and 1 space down, picking up a purple guy before your train gets to it. Your move.
I think building rails with bridges and tunnels could be fun.
Another completely unrelated gimmick would be to build rails above a dude that would come down after you picked up that dude.

The two separate planets as the first level makes a lot of sense because of how obvious the portals are. While it is a bit more complicated, it makes it known that there must be some way of connecting the islands, while the second level’s portals may seem like scenery to some players. Especially as there isn’t any tutorial to explicitly say they are portals.

I’m really liking how some of these sections aren’t about learning new mechanics, but are about puzzles revolving around challenging uses of mechanics that were there the whole time, just in the background.

the green aliens (i dont know the actuall profession name, so i guess gardener) have to go to greenhouses to produce oxygen, cuz i think they breath oxygen

I get the notification "The interplanetary portal hop" now I see that the title and thumbnail have changed
I think the first level having 2 domes for portals makes a bit more sense in what they do, because you might interpret them as regular obstacles otherwise unless you accidentally go over them. There is no way to get from one dome to the other without a portal, so naturally, you would expect them to be portals.

I'm pretty sure the reason that Perseus-1 starts with 2 sections is to make you think that thing in the middle is a portal, because
1. How the heck will you go to other sections without portals?
2. You might think that hole thingy in the middle is just another obstacle.
The reason they start you off with two portals is simple.
If you start with two portals on one planet, there's a problem - The portals look *very* similar to a lot of other random blockades and detritus in the game that are totally non-functional except as blockages. Which means many players, without an explanation to correct the initial assumption, will assume the portals are to be avoided and struggle with a puzzle that requires use of the portals. There is no guarantee that all players would stumble into the portals and figure out that they're useful until they've bashed their head on the puzzle for a while. Incredibly frustrating and unfun.
By putting the first portals on separate planets, the player starts off with a question - How do I get from one planet to another? Well, there's a new thing right in the middle of each planet - And a quick experiment will immediately show that, indeed, the portals are the key. This lesson is reinforced with the fact that none of the aliens in that first puzzle are on the same planet as their drop off locations.
The puzzle forces you to experiment with the portals and figure out how they work before you can achieve *anything* else. You would face your players with a brick wall otherwise, as the game leans on minimal tutorialization for new mechanics like this. It can get away with that because of smart design like this. Later puzzles lean on this clever introduction, and do not need to separate the portals anymore.
In before you beat Ursa major and then a notice pops up congratulating you on beating the easy difficulty levels.

The reason they introduce the portals using two planets is probably to make sure the player actually understands that it's a portal, rather than just thinking it's an obstacle.
