Kenya is amazing country, not to mention how beautiful Nairobi is. It has a National park within the city and its diverse Africans, Caucasians, Arabs and Indians cultures make it hospitable for everyone from everywhere. As a native Kenyan, born and raised in Nairobi, I also want to point out that different parts of Kenya have different things to offer. For instance, Mombasa (Kenyan coast) the food is different vs Kisumu (western Kenya) vs. Nairobi (capital city). Usually pili pili (chilli/pepper) is offered on the side.

Your findings about Kenya are 100% correct. Yes we don’t do soup and peppe but instead Kenyans cook fresh food everyday in their homes. I was a student in India where one Nigerian friend showed me how to make soup to avoid wasting time cooking fresh food everyday in order to have more time for study.
It’s poverty at times and perhaps the hot weather/ lack of fridge that Kenyans used to prepare food everyday. Your experience is just a reflection of your culture/ family life and not the entire population of Kenya. Of course Kenyans also cook soup and we have many Nigerians here in the U.K. and the only difference is the ingredients and the way they prepare their soup/ stew.
The day I realised Kenyan food is bland to other Africans (and Asians) is when my Ethiopian friends told me "Kenyans consider salt a spice" 😂 I didn't know whether to laugh or cry 😂😭 ETA: I let them cook when they're at my house. 😂

Why I love Nigerians is because they are honest with their thought and bold to say what they think without being hypocritical about it. They are real and straight. Guys I have travelled around big cities in the world but Nairobi is crazily expensive in housing with tiny tiny spaces called rooms. But I love the weather.
Rent in Nairobi varies according to neighbourhood and nearness to town. You'll find a 1 bedroom in Kilimani at 50k or more,while in Utawala or Rongai is 10k to 15k.

I assume pepper is not the only spice? We love spices! I'm a Kenyan from the North, and we use different types of spices; ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, black seeds, chilli, turmeric, etc. In as much as we love spices, we generally don't like overly hot foods. Hence, we've homemade chilli sauce infused with a tamarind we use to as 🌶.

Look at us living opposite lives like Ying Yang Twins! 😂 That plastic and nylon bags thing in Nigeria took me a while to adjust to, as a Kenyan who moved to Nigeria. Every small thing, nylon. Nylon. Nylon. Nylon EVERYWHERE! Pure water bags everywhere! At first, I would buy something and just ask the vendor not to put it in a polythene bag, I’d carry my own bag from home or just carry the thing in my hand. But then at some point, I just gave up. 😂 About fresh fruits and vegetables, I honestly really miss that in Kenya. That fruit pudding is always ELITE! Nigerians don’t eat fresh vegetables like that, so finding things like sukuma wiki, even spinach is so hard! And when you find it, it’s sooo expensive! I think it depends on the state you are residing in Nigeria. In Delta state we have fresh vegetables there. But in Lagos you can’t find it because they barely farm.

Sukuma wiki and spinach isn't ready available in Lagos but if you need ugu, green (Terere) and ewedu (jute/mrenda) then you have no problem in Lagos and relatively expensive except you know where to buy them fresh from the farm. I always cringe when I hear Kenyans claiming the cuisine is great. I do love our food but it's nothing to brag about, in comparison to other cuisines. And yes, i find west african cuisine to be really broad in range and sumptuous
Pepe is served on the side because most Kenyans don't like hot chilli. But we have other types of spices like cardamom, cinammon, nutmeg, masala,paprika,black pepper etc. we also incorporate herbs like bayleaves, corriander,bell peppers,rosemary, thyme etc. Take a tour in Ngara we have Indians who sell herbs and spices in bulk and you'll be amazed.
This was great to watch! Maybe an addition, I think our streets are calmer, I found Lagos too noisy (or I was in the wrong parts). Strangely, I think the electricity connection in Kenya is more reliable, by far, there was too much power outage in Lagos for my liking.
You should visit Abuja next time!! It’s a lot less chaotic and beautiful with so much to do. I’m Nigerian but I can only stand Lagos for a couple weeks 🙈
I laughed when you said liquid milk, because when someone says milk I naturally assume it’s liquid and not powder. Unless they specify powder. I understand why you say that because When my sister travelled to Nigeria, she said they struggled to find “liquid milk” 😂 She loved it there more than Kenya and though. Btw, here in the U.K. we do struggle with the chilli in Nigerian food, it takes time to get used to. However, we have similar soups, stew, just cooked in a different way using different spices / ingredients. I think Nairobi is abit different because of the small number of Muslims and large number of Kenyans who cook bland tribal food. In my family we make stew, soup and not always plain rice. The food you eat in Nairobi represents kikuyu and perhaps luo cuisine. Swahili and Nubian food use spices and not bland at all. We prepare chilli sauce separately because we also consider small kids. Nigerians in the U.K. feed their small kids very spicey food until they get used to it. Initially the kids tend to dislike the chilli . That’s why in Kenya it’s a bit different.

Rent here is flexible, you can talk with the landlord, house agency for monthly rent, annually or 6months, Kenya is all about negotiation ...we call it "kujieleza" or "kujitetea" ,also u didn't mention how we pay for our electricity like most of the house holds use tokens which pay as you use just like scratch card, or internet bundles, ..kenya is very hostable country, Kenya host a lot of foreigners like from neighbouring countries,we have huge population of Somalia, ethopians, ugandans,Tanzania ,,Nigerian's, burundi , rwandees, Sudanese and they all leave in peace and harmony
Kenya is really diverse......You should travel outside Nairobi more....Indians, and other people (especially of Arab origin) are spread across most of Kenyan Towns

I am in Mombasa because Nairobi was too cold. I had to take out my winter coat to survive their freezing temperatures. And despite these cold nights these people don't do soup. But I love their soberly dressed food. Just like us black ppl from Suriname the pilipili/hot n spicy is not abused at their dinner table.
To survive the cold, we drink alot of tea, coffee, porridge and bone ( 🦴) soup. Then have heavy coats when up and about in Nairobi. Duvets for sleeping

Generally kenyans we don't have a lot of food variety maybe the coastal area due to past influences, I once ate rice for a full year in different style from indians, plus we kenyans generally don't know how to cook thats a fact, our food is generally blunt

The heat/humidity is unbelievable; showering in cold water 5 times a night in Lagos just to grab couple of hours worth of sleep😅. But they are the hardest working people I have ever met👍
Yeah, actually the word "Nairobi" is a Maasai word for a cold place. The current land where Nairobi is situated was a native land for the Maasai people. They realised over time how the water of the Nairobi river was and hence referred to it as "enkare nairobi" translated "cold water". The colanial government dropped the first word and retained the second and thus the name "Nairobi".

About food, i like how you have analyzed it. I have always asked myself how nigerians will mix beef or goat meat with fish and shrimps and call that soup 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. In Kenya you have to pick one, it's either you go with fish, or beef or goat meat but not all in one.

Look at us living opposite lives like Ying Yang Twins! 😂 That plastic and nylon bags thing in Nigeria took me a while to adjust to, as a Kenyan who moved to Nigeria. Every small thing, nylon. Nylon. Nylon. Nylon EVERYWHERE! Pure water bags everywhere!
At first, I would buy something and just ask the vendor not to put it in a polythene bag, I’d carry my own bag from home or just carry the thing in my hand. But then at some point, I just gave up. 😂
About fresh fruits and vegetables, I honestly really miss that in Kenya. That fruit pudding is always ELITE! Nigerians don’t eat fresh vegetables like that, so finding things like sukuma wiki, even spinach is so hard! And when you find it, it’s sooo expensive!

I think it depends on the state you are residing in Nigeria. In Delta state we have fresh vegetables there. But in Lagos you can’t find it because they barely farm.

Sukuma wiki and spinach isn't ready available in Lagos but if you need ugu, green (Terere) and ewedu (jute/mrenda) then you have no problem in Lagos and relatively expensive except you know where to buy them fresh from the farm. Pepe is served on the side because most Kenyans don't like hot chilli. But we have other types of spices like cardamom, cinammon, nutmeg, masala,paprika,black pepper etc. we also incorporate herbs like bayleaves, corriander,bell peppers,rosemary, thyme etc. Take a tour in Ngara we have Indians who sell herbs and spices in bulk and you'll be amazed.

Maybe an addition, I think our streets are calmer, I found Lagos too noisy (or I was in the wrong parts). Strangely, I think the electricity connection in Kenya is more reliable, by far, there was too much power outage in Lagos for my liking.
You should visit Abuja next time!! It’s a lot less chaotic and beautiful with so much to do. I’m Nigerian but I can only stand Lagos for a couple weeks 🙈

As for electricity, it's like some people have sworn in Nigeria that we can never have constant electricity.
I laughed when you said liquid milk, because when someone says milk I naturally assume it’s liquid and not powder. Unless they specify powder. I understand why you say that because When my sister travelled to Nigeria, she said they struggled to find “liquid milk” 😂
She loved it there more than Kenya and though.
Btw, here in the U.K. we do struggle with the chilli in Nigerian food, it takes time to get used to.
However, we have similar soups, stew, just cooked in a different way using different spices / ingredients.
I think Nairobi is abit different because of the small number of Muslims and large number of Kenyans who cook bland tribal food.
In my family we make stew, soup and not always plain rice. The food you eat in Nairobi represents kikuyu and perhaps luo cuisine.
Swahili and Nubian food use spices and not bland at all. We prepare chilli sauce separately because we also consider small kids. Nigerians in the U.K. feed their small kids very spicey food until they get used to it. Initially the kids tend to dislike the chilli . That’s why in Kenya it’s a bit different.

Rent here is flexible, you can talk with the landlord, house agency for monthly rent, annually or 6months, Kenya is all about negotiation ...we call it "kujieleza" or "kujitetea" ,also u didn't mention how we pay for our electricity like most of the house holds use tokens which pay as you use just like scratch card, or internet bundles, ..kenya is very hostable country, Kenya host a lot of foreigners like from neighbouring countries,we have huge population of Somalia, ethopians, ugandans,Tanzania ,,Nigerian's, burundi , rwandees, Sudanese and they all leave in peace and harmony

I am in Mombasa because Nairobi was too cold. I had to take out my winter coat to survive their freezing temperatures. And despite these cold nights these people don't do soup. But I love their soberly dressed food. Just like us black ppl from Suriname the pilipili/hot n spicy is not abused at their dinner table.

You're very right about pepper 😅. We Kenyans aren't fond of pepper like most West Africans. When inviting Kenyans to your home, please let them know in advance that you'll be putting pepper in the food😂. Most of us can only tolerate very mild or little spice in the food 😅😂.

Everywhere needs to get rid of plastic bags. In Scotland they arent banned but you have to charge for them so everyone stopped using them. Its just amazing how much less litter there is now. You used to find plastic bag litter everywhere but now they have disappeared.

Generally kenyans we don't have a lot of food variety maybe the coastal area due to past influences, I once ate rice for a full year in different style from indians, plus we kenyans generally don't know how to cook thats a fact, our food is generally blunt

Yeah, actually the word "Nairobi" is a Maasai word for a cold place. The current land where Nairobi is situated was a native land for the Maasai people. They realised over time how the water of the Nairobi river was and hence referred to it as "enkare nairobi" translated "cold water". The colanial government dropped the first word and retained the second and thus the name "Nairobi".
