    All speeds are calculated from one, Vs (stall clean). [VLS = 1.23 Vs]. [Vapp = VLS + 5 (or 1/3 wind)]. This is all about keeping a safe speed above stall in case of a wind change.

  • @peterrath197
    @peterrath197 Před 5 lety +8

    I see how you're trying to explain this but using the term "constant groundspeed" is misleading.
    What if there's a tailwind on the approach at some point in the approach (like windshear, which is when GS mini is most useful)? Using your figures from this example; GS Mini of 127kts, if you had a 10 kt tailwind the actual GS would increase to 137Kts. Not constant. GS Mini maintains a *minimum* groundspeed, not a constant groundspeed. Apart from that, your video was a nice help.

  • @kuyeskar
    @kuyeskar Před 5 lety +7

    Hi initially wind component taken was 21kts and 1/3 of that was 7kts..we also assumed that our VLS was 132kts...
    So u added 132+7=139kts. Why then would you subtract 12kts to calculate gs mini base line...shouldn’t it be a 21kts subtraction.

    • @CameTo
      @CameTo Před 3 lety

      The most freaky thing isn't that the guy doing the presentation made a mistake, rather the many comments saying how good and easy his reasoning was couldn't see it either. For people who've no idea what we're on about, look at his formulas for calculating GS mini and Vapp and then ask yourself, how can those ever be the same? Bear in mind his example didn't have zero wind

    Other factors - Wind gusts say 30Knts. this must be factored into Vref (mainly based on total weight). This would mean Vls +5 + 1/2 headwind + 1/2 wind gusts. = 127+5+1/2 (12) +wind gusts(1/2*30) = 127+5+6+15=153knts.

    Hello Juan, I’ve seen pilots that when the wind is variable, like to set the PERF wind so that its a full tailwind, and according to this theory they are actually reducing the GS mini protection. What do you think about this practice?

    • @CameTo
      @CameTo Před 3 lety

    Love your videos. Subbed.....just one question. With a wind of 100/12 in your example the VAPP should be 137 (139 was for wind 100/21). This throws off all the other calculations by a few knots.

  • @anvarakhmedov8236
    @anvarakhmedov8236 Před 5 lety +6

    I don't understand, you had wind 100/21 Vapp 139 then you changed wind to 100/12 and in the next sample your Vapp still 139 , but you said that if 1/3 of wind less then Vls + 5 , we should use Vls +5

    • @1stepprep
      @1stepprep  Před 5 lety +2

      Yes! VLS+5 or VLS +1/3 wind the greater of the two!! I see your point, we just needed to update the number back to 100/21! The steps to get there ultimately are still the same! Thanks for your comment!

    Cool maths but you entirely miss the point of GS mini. If the actual wing is GREATER than the tower wind the target speed will increase as at some point the wind will decrease to the actual tower wind.
    Talking about ground speeds etc is meaningless to pilots as we look at air speed and wind.
    If the wind is greater than tower wind it will run the target up to allow for the decrease which is coming.
    Forget about ground speeds they are useless as is all the plus and minus winds.
    Its all about wind in excess of reported wind...its all about simple..
