Hi Atty. I think you made the right choice. You sacrificed everything for the future of your family. Welcome to Canada!
I am not a member of the IBP but I could relate to you as far as the pain and challenges of moving to a new country from the Phil.
I have been in Canada since 1989 and plan to retire this coming year.
Mahirap talagang mag adjust dito sa Canada. However, for those of us who did mot give up, the future is bright.
At the end of the day you will come to realize that coming to tjis big beautiful country is the best decision you have made in your life. For yourself and your family.Good luck.

Canada is the biggest scammer of all time. Immigration to Canada is the biggest scam.
They are inviting people to immigrate to their place which is their source also of their economic activity.
Its à barren Land after all.

i can relate ... new subscriber here. I left the Philippines in 2005 to join my wife in London. Leaving my dream job as Municipal Engineer and Civil Engineer for 10 years in my humble hometown is never easy... then starting in a new country from scratch is a huge challenge ... but with determination , prayer and resilience ... I kept my pride away and work as cleaner , then care assistant , nurse assistant then went back to university and gained my First Class Honours in Nursing in 2014 ... still studying even at 50 for a post graduate studies is a continuous challenge . I hope and wish your decision with your family to move to Canada is successful. God bless.

Hi Emma and Alvin, your story of settling in Canada is very inspiring . We have been living here in Vancouver for the past 29 years. Just like you, we left our nice jobs in the Philippibes to look for a better opportunities for our two kids. I worked in an American bank while my wife was a an ICU nurse in PGH. Our two kids were 16 and 6 years old then. We're proud to say that our son (Mark) is now a successful auto mechanic in Lexus while our daughter (Kristine) is a nurse in Richmond Hospital. One thing more, we came to Canada when I was already 45 years old and my wife was 41. It' s really very hard working your way up in a foreign country. We were able to succeed through prayers and sacrifices. We are already retired now and receiving a good pension from the government. So much now for my long story of struggle in Canada. Laban lang kabayan.

Hi Emma. I'm also a lawyer in Philippines and I practiced for 5 years as corporate lawyer in an insurance company. I live here in Las Vegas. Thank you for sharing your story. In Nevada, I'm not qualified to file petition for equivalency to take bar exam because I need 10 years of practice. I'm short of 5 years. But that's ok. I got a great job in an insurance company here and worked for 5 years. I owned 2 houses in Las Vegas and saved up for retirement. Don't worry about not practicing law. There are job and business opportunities that are better than the law profession and that can pay equivalent or more than the law profession. That's just my opinion. Keep it up.

Prosecutors/Fiscals starting at 200 libo per month. Ngunit ang mga position na yon ay kailangan 5 years experience at sa RTC 10 years experience. Sa private sector naman may Pay Scale na nilaan ng IBP para sa lahat na practitioner upang walang unfair competition. May Acceptance Fee, Retainer Fee, Appearance Fee at iba pa. Ayon sa mga practitioner na ang may established na private practice ay kikita rin ng average 150 to 300 libo per month after deducting expenses. Ang iba siguro na bagohan pa lang at wala pang established na mga cliente maliit lang kinikita.

@@alwinemma Just always remember, just like when we were still in the college of law, mahirap sa una ang logic and how to analyze provisions pero once you learn to understand how it works and how to apply it in different cases, madali na lahat, dba? Same thing when you are in a new place, you need to analyze the situation, what do they need, what do you need to prioritize first, how will you be competitive. Mahirap kasi mag-aadjust kayo pero eventually when you learn the trades of the place sobrang madali na lang. Just have the eagerness to adapt and always support each other.

Our kababayan here in Zamboanga, who spent many years in Canada, once shared a remarkable insight with us. "Canada is like a gold mine, great for working and earning, but not really a place to live." He went there solely to make money, living in a dingy basement and saving every penny. And save he did! He retired early and returned to our Province here in Philippines, with fortune in his pocket.
Today, our kababayan lives like a king. Thanks to his frugality in Canada, he now owns not one, but two magnificent mansions and cars in our hometown plus the low-tax, low-cost-of-living and perfect weather here in Philippines. And as if that weren't enough, he's also invested in real estate rentals, with a profitable side business that brings him even more wealth.
No more homesickness. Being around with close peeps gives him all the warm fuzzies and a sense of belonging that he couldn't find in Canada and anywhere else. But he still loves to travel back to Canada and other countries for tour purposes only.

Emma that was an HONEST evaluation of everything in your decision to uproot your family and move to Canada. It's inspiring and hope in the next few months you have updates to this episode alone. Kodus to you and your husband for making the leap of faith to your new country and may you both succeed. It's beautiful up there too. By the way I suddenly remembered as I was contemplating of moving up there from the US, I called some facilities to work in Vancouver and befriended a nurse in one of those conversations as she urged me to move and told me that she's also an immigrant. I said really when her accent is the same as a canadian or american. She finally told me she's white born in Washington USA. I was so curious as to why she left the US. Her reason free healthcare as in the US you have to pay for insurance and everything and in her masteral thesis she found out that insurance after awhile could unload or throw you out from coverage if its been years they've been paying and taking care of you which the insurance industry considers as a loss. I've heard that in the news several years ago and more today. She also told me that healthcare in Canada is free for all while in the US only helps the rich NOT the poor. It was a revelation that took me by surprise and I believe her as it was her masteral thesis she has to defend.

It depends on your passion. If you are passionate about practicing law then you will always feel that emptiness inside you no matter how financially successful you will be in Canada or USA. If lawyering for you is just a means to achieve financial success and social status then you can get your satisfaction without longing for the field you chose to abandon. As they say, America, England, Canada are places where the young and the talented, the enterprising and the industrious are constantly offered with opportunities and the rewards of efforts and initiative and even the common man is properly compensated for the sweat from his brow.

You already made the right choice to move CAN. There is NO such thing as Free Healthcare. Please refer to pay stab 😮. But way better than having none at all (aka PH). I love that you are thinking about your children future. Many Filipino that comes to US/CAN just think about making money. After one year working, they want instant gratification (new car, brand name items, etc..) then they complain at end of month barely have enough money. In my mind, it is life style change that a lot Filipino struggle to adjust. Sorry for ranting..😁 Good luck Emma & Alwin. You have bright future ahead of you.

Hi my name is Bien Garcia and I have been in Canada for 48 years. I had my degree in the Philippines and I came to Canada after martial law. I was planning to take my masters from WLU in Waterloo but I was told my degree was not acceptable so they advised me to start from the beginning. So I did. Since then I have never looked back and never had any regret. I am now retired and and happy I moved into this wonderful country. I live in Toronto and have meet a lot of people from the Philippines with their degree from doctors, lawyers, accountants and so on. You are not unique we have been there just think that you are here for the long term and for the good of your family especially for your children. As for me i have two grown kids who are very successful here in Toronto and I am very happy at the result of my decision to move here in Canada.
So do not fret about anything now that you are here focus on the future for you and your family we did and the result is fantastic. I was gonna say good luck but I do not believe in luck, you were guided to be here grab it and be thankful. Ragards

Have been practicing law for 17 years before moving to Canada. You're right, moving here is not about the money but for your children's future. Nilo Divina was a classmate in UST (first year in Arts & Letters). I just opted to take up law in San Beda. We moved in British Columbia in 2009. I did not pursue law anymore because it's costly and at the same time I was raising 2 kids when we moved here. If you need some tips/insights, just let me know.

@@alwinemma You can call me maam :). Louie is just my dog's name. I read in the tread that you are taking the program for legal assistants. That is a good start but is more an admin thing. You can go techie and pursue a paralegal program, which pays more. As paralegal, you get to discuss cases with lawyers and be involved without the stress that goes with it. Of course there are time na stressful din but not as much if you're dealing with the case as a lawyer.

This is very true. Just like with my inlaws, hospitalizations striked and loans went left and right. Unfortunately, that would mean children are expected right away to give big amounts even though they have their own families already. I am only citing the reality about the immediate family financial struggles when things like this happen. It’s really hard, not all but majority in the Philippines thought that it’s fine , they have the money, they are earning dollars but less do they know that we are undermining our own budget just for them. Also, this is exactly me and my husband are both talking about that we will never do this to our daughter. One exact same reason why we migrated as well. By the way if you guys are in Calgary, we are just nearby, Cochrane.

The only thing I wish she did was to pay more emotional attention to us. She unfortunately has undiagnosed NPD, and we technically raised ourselves. But very thankful to have moved here. Most of her kids now make 6-fig in our careers and have gone to top tier universities. Her grandchildren have gone on to private schools too.

I feel the same, being abroad for 16 years already. Everyone has their own reasons & opinions though. But mine is - it’s just one big rat race out here in the west. Yes, all the factors that’s mentioned here are so attractive and really does make for a great decision for moving. But unfortunately, it’s not going to be that black and white. There are other hidden negative factors that would soon be at play, that really nobody talks about. I only wish people would have known that, if you already have a good job and are well established in the Philippines, then you are already well off and that is enough. There may be less traffic here, but everything is still at great distances that everyone in the family must learn to drive or drive their own car to be productive. (There are great public Transpo. - but still that takes time, as well). Children are better in the Philippines where they become very respectful, religious, we’ll behaved and very family oriented citizens. Peer pressure here in the west is very strong, even if you taught your kids well at home.. You may earn more here or have benefits - but it’s still mortgage here or insurance there, then taxes here or taxes there, etc. etc… With that said, I emphasize again that this is just my own opinion, from my own experiences. Truly, wish the best for your family!

According to the NCA website assessments could either be 1) writing the NCA exam; 2) going to university or 3) a mix of 1 and 2. Going to the university is a lot more expensive than just taking the exam but its advantage is to have a proper education in Canadian law, that is if you have the resources. Can you please give me some advice on what to do? And where did you get the materials for study, books, and notes po? Kindly share your experience po sa NCA process para makadecide kami properly. I chose to migrate here in Canada because of my children. No regret coming here. I have 2 daughters, both work under AHS, and one of my sons is in Paris taking his PhD. under EVOMET funded by EU. He took his Master's in Germany. My other son is enjoying his hobby of having cars although he did not go to the university, he finished his Aircraft Structure Technician certficate. There's a lot of opportunities for our children. If we did not come here, they would not have this kind of life there. We are enjoying our life now. I thank God for everything. She graduated from UP Los Banos majoring in food science and took her MS and Ph.D. in food science at UBC. But since job opportunities abound south of the border we moved and currently, she's a Senior Principal Scientist for a major food company. I know Filipinos are a smart breed of people but unfortunately, landed immigrants need local experience or local education in Canada to work in the field of their specialization. Don't lose hope keep moving on forward and someday you'll achieve your dream of a better life for yourself and your family. Power on!

Hi! Kamusta and Welcome to Canada. Yes, I do agree that there's a green pasture here but we need to sacrifice and embrace the cold weather. I was sponsored by my parents and landed 1987. I am a Draftswoman in pinas as well here in Toronto. I did apply in Engineering agency and lucky I got my skills back but then the company moved to highway 7 I quit coz my family here in Scarborough. Then I found company which they do Electrical and I don't have experience in it but they trained me. So, don't get frustrated and Philippine education was American pattern and here in Canada was British patterned it's totally different. You have to understand it they have different Laws in Canada that you need to adopt and even the unpredictable canadian weather ☺️. If you're saying your husband is an Engineer then he could get a job in engineering company thru agency and as long as he knows CAD or anything about computer drafting design. I also know a lawyer in Brazil but she's working in hospital research, pinay nurse she's working at the hotel, architecture she works at auto factory. So, please don't get frustrated just be thankful what you have.🙏🙏🙏
