    This is one of the best Skew T explanations I have watched.

    Wow. Learning skew-Ts is proving to be a lengthy journey, but watching this video again I am slowly consolidating my knowledge and actually learning new things!
    Thank you!

    Why couldn't you make videos like this when I was learning to fly?

  • @fox156
    @fox156 Před 5 lety

    Awesome video, thanks! I found it but looks like the video description here is missing the link to the NOAA RUC soundings site. Other than the Op40 which models do you use for Boulder? Theres some good learning stuff on the RUC site too.

    • @TyGunnlaugsson
      @TyGunnlaugsson  Před 5 lety

      On that website, I usually use the Op40 , but if I am using XC Skies, i'll use the HRRR model. Thanks for catching the missing link in the description. I fixed it!

    • @fox156
      @fox156 Před 5 lety

      @@TyGunnlaugsson HRRR is in both places, is just easier to see different HRRR model run times on xcskies? WIsh the scale of the RUC soundings would show just the lower elevations.

    • @TyGunnlaugsson
      @TyGunnlaugsson  Před 5 lety +1

      @@fox156 you are right, they did add the HRRR to the RUC site. It is good to see the higher elevations to see if there will be high clouds casting a shadow on the ground. I usually don't use the RUC site, I have an app on my phone that is like that website but easier to use. It is called Skew T for android.

    11:00 it's an inversion because ambient air is staying at about 20°C until 5000', and only then starting to cool with altitude, meaning it's too warm for surface air heated above 20°C, and cooling as it rises, to continue throught the ambient air?

    How do you find a skew-t for the area you are interested in?

  • @jm-vg4yn
    @jm-vg4yn Před 4 lety

    So to find out how unstable t would be, I would place the pink line in the highest surface temperature for the day?

    • @TyGunnlaugsson
      @TyGunnlaugsson  Před 4 lety

      Yes, and you can play with it plus and minus a few. What happens if there are high clouds and it doesn't get as hot? What happens if a parking lot gets a few degrees warmer than the surroundings ect.

    • @jm-vg4yn
      @jm-vg4yn Před 4 lety

      Ty Gunnlaugsson Ok! Thanks a lot, O appreciate it! How often is this chart updated?

    • @TyGunnlaugsson
      @TyGunnlaugsson  Před 4 lety

      @@jm-vg4yn It completely depends on which one you are using. Typically they only send the soundings up 2 times a day 6a and 6pm but most skew t diagrams are based off of a model that can be updated fairly frequently.

    • @jm-vg4yn
      @jm-vg4yn Před 4 lety

      Ty Gunnlaugsson Ok! That’s great to hear. If a parcel were to pass the LcL, would clouds form as far as the Parcel would travel? And, does the dew point have to meet the surrounding temperature in order for Thunderstorms to form?

    • @TyGunnlaugsson
      @TyGunnlaugsson  Před 4 lety

      @@jm-vg4yn I would imagine you would see a drier air mass as well as a temperature inversion but i'm not sure.

    Great video. One small correction: @1:10 you point to the minus 10 degrees C line, but say 'everything along this line represents 10 degrees Celsius'
    You say it correctly 15 seconds later :)
