  • Unboxing the Sony Xperia 5 III ahead of my full review, including a camera tour, full specs, gaming test with Genshin Impact and more. Here in the UK, the Xperia 5 III hits stores next month from £899, but is it one of the best premium smartphones of 2021?
Sony's more compact version of the Mark 3 flagship phone offers very similar specifications and features, including a near identical triple-lens camera setup. All that's missing there is a ToF sensor for real time object tracking. Performance is hot thanks to the Snapdragon 888 chipset, so gaming on PubG, CODM etc is effortless. Plus the Xperia 5 III boasts the same gamer features as the Xperia 1.
You've got the same size battery and a more compact form factor at 6.1-inches. Sure, there's no 4K resolution, but the HDR smarts and visual effects are back in action.
Full review of the Xperia 5 Mark 3 coming soon, in the meantime let me know your thoughts!

I've got my Sony Xperia 5 II a couple of months ago and I don't see too much difference with the Mark 3. Apart from the microprocessor and the new camera hardware, which are not critical for me, I don't see too many reasons for upgrade. I hope the new camera app is updated in Xperia 5 II though. Maybe people with the original Xperia 5 or older Xperia models can see a huge difference 👍

Great review as ever Chris. I have the mk ii at the moment don't think I would change. If they had put wireless charging on it and fixed a few of the other niggles I have (auto brightness jumps around a lot, signal strength not great, touch sensitivity issues using gesture back key particularly bad with screen protector) then I may have gone for it. I don't game so the heating on the 888 would not be a big concern to me

I've been using the Xperia 5 for the past year and thoroughly impressed with it as an all round phone. Especially for media, gaming and camera functions. It has definitely restored my faith in Sony phones and at this rate my next phone will most likely be another Xperia.

@@coreeman101 Still using it, but looking to upgrade in the summer. The phone is still going strong, very close to stock Android UI experience. No lagging, still performs well, camera is brilliant once you get the hang of it. The only downside is the battery life isn't as good as it was even though I activate battery care mode. But I'm definitely shortlisting the Sony Xperia range for my next upgrade. Most of my family have iPhones and Samsungs but I honestly do prefer my Xperia for a better all-round experience.

Sony should make an exact equivalent of this phone, but with a larger screen, around 6.7inch diagonal. Or, even better, make a 16:9 or 18:9 display version for us people who don't like so much the stretched 21:9 display.
Other than that, Sony is doing pretty well in all other areas.
Love the metal glass sandwhich design (Shame on Samsung for ditching it), keeping of the useful features (top/bottom bezels - though I wish we still had some slim physical home button + capacitive buttons on the chin), MicroSD card slot, 3.5mm jack, classic shape flat rectangular display - awesome stuff.

@@victorrumyantsev3718 Sony phones at least were trustworthy to me.
No false advertising of camera features (like how I got duped into buying the Exynos version of the S10e because everyone reviewed the Snapdragon 855 version on CZcams with the better processing algorythms and with the Sony sensors) or with the promised timeframe for software updates (like what Huawei did to the P9 and almost to the Honor 8) and no benchmark score sorcery behind the scenes, like with Huawei, Samsung or OnePlus. What you see on a Sony is what you get with a Sony. Aside from them, really only Apple and Asus make small phones nowadays and don't even expect a headphone jack or expendable storage on your Apples and Samsungs.
And Sony's camera software has been SIGNIFICANTLY improved over the years to shoot sharp photos and videos.
I've been duped so many times by other Android manufacturers that because I don't like the "walled garden" approach of Apple, really the only choice I have to keep the small form factor, the headphone jack and Micro SD expandibility alive is by going back to those Sony phones I once adored.
I know I have to work my arse off in tandem with university, but I'm sure it's going to be worth it for an excellent compact flagship from a Japanese company whose name on a smartphone guarantees longevity.

That's an amazing price for a flagship from last year, half the price of a refurbished S21. Plus it has an headphone jack and sd card slot, and I like that the camera has so many options to thinker with it close to a real camera, it will be useful for me to learn photography. I don't really care about any of the things you mentioned a part from maybe low brightness in the sun. The design is a little different from the edges.. The screen is larger in Xperia 1 Mark 3 and has a higher resolution and supports wireless charging. The back is matte. I think the front speakers are a little clearer and better, so for myself I will choose the Xperia 1M3 But choosing the Xperia 5 Mark 3 will be suitable for those who are looking for a smaller size and a lower price
