  • This week we answered some common - and not so common - questions about anxiety and recovery. Thanks to everyone on Instagram that submitted a question. I appreciate it!
    First I reviewed some basic principles you can fall back on when asking many of the questions that were asked. That's about the first 15 minutes of the episode, which will be useful if you're new to this or need a refresher to remind you of what you're dealing with.
    Then we moved on to some specific questions.
    * AFTER THE CRISIS HAS PASSED, DO YOU STILL NEED THERAPY? DO YOU STILL HAVE TO WORK ON YOURSELF?
    * WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OCD AND GAD OR PANIC DISORDER AND HEALTH ANXIETY?
    * HOW CAN YOU BE SURE THIS IS JUST ANXIETY?
    * WHEN AM I ALLOWED TO REST?
    * HOW DOES MINDFULNESS FIT INTO RECOVERY?
    * ARE POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS OK?
    * HOW DO I ACCEPT ...?
    * WHAT ARE THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAYS OF SELF-REGULATING WHEN ANXIOUS?
    * WHAT ABOUT THIS KIND OF ANXIETY?

    Really informative and helpful video, I guess my roadblock in recovery is accepting the diagnosis of doctors that it is anxiety and not any other health condition as my trigger is always mental fatigue. For most of the others I have seen anxiety is about excess energy (adrenaline ) but I feel the oppsosite lack of energy which triggers panic sensations.

      In the context I am working in, anxiety isn't about any particular "energy level". Its about being extremely worried and afraid of your anxiety level, regardless of the level itself. People dealing with these issues are highly intolerant of their own bodies and minds and often wind up interpreting states like "low energy" as a disaster.

      @@TheAnxiousTruth Thanks for the reply , So the way I understand this is something as normal as "low energy" is being interpreted as catastrophic by someone with anxiety issues.

    Hi Drew.
    Just curious as to what your thoughts are regarding anxiety and secure attachment?
    That all anxiety is a form of separation anxiety and that a lot of anxiety issues stem from not feeling a safe secure attachment in life.
    Thanks for any input on this topic.

    • @TheAnxiousTruth
      @TheAnxiousTruth  Před 10 měsíci

      I kinda hate how attachment theory became the automatic go-to in wellness/insta-therapy circles in the last year or two. It suddenly gets applied to EVERYTHING for no good reason. That being said, if you see yourself as weak or incapable of handling challenges (which may or may not be part of lacking secure attachment) that can make one more vulnerable to developing an anxiety disorder because avoidance will become a default coping strategy. It can also make exposure-based treatment more challenging. However, I do not believe that all anxiety is a form of separation anxiety. There's literally no data to even remotely support that claim which tends to be based on what people think "sounds right", and far too many people that develop anxiety disorders that have zero identification with insecure attachment. Even people that would be assessed as securely attached develop these problems every day.

    My biggest issue is i once started to do the things for my agoraphobia. started practicing going out and so on. and it got worse and symptoms got worse. now since then im hiding again.
    Now i get this symptoms that get really scary like waking up with like band around my heart or such a void in my stomach its unreal. And since im kind of used to them they are not inducing anxiety but really uncertanty what if there is something wrong with my health or not. then i forget about it till i notice it again. and next day the cylce starts again
    My biggest uncertanty is i never got checked out by a doctor because of my agoraphobia. so i never know and im constantly afraid to try some things again.. its a constant cycle of thinking something is wrong with my health.

      You just have to get up, get out and say “oh well, if I die today, I die.” I know it sounds bad but you have to get out of that fear of dying. That helped me so much.

      @@xMrBloodiiIts normal to fear death. I don't think many go out thinking, well if l die, l die. Our survival mechanism is too strong and of course we care. But its what you do while you care. A motto perhaps better is: face it and see. Go out and see how capable you are. Practice while feeling those sensations. Practice and try and lose your resistance to those feelings. Rag doll it when you are living with those sensations. Show yourself whether they are important or not. Accept they are there and surrender to them being there. It is a leap of faith but if you don't try, you remain stuck.

      @@xMrBloodii I’m a realist and like to face my challenges and obstacles head on. I told myself that I’m not a fearful person. And pushed through when I didn’t know what the hell was going on with me. This approach doesn’t work for everyone.

    What about if there is some underlying trauma that even someone didn't aware of? Will anxiety come back again and again if that is not resolved? Maybe there is some wrong behavioral paterns that is put us there in the first place. By the way great podcast! 👍

    • @redflame2fire
      @redflame2fire Před 10 měsíci +1

      My thoughts in reply to that is that if you practice non resistance when anxious and if you show yourself through experience that you can tolerate the discomfort/distress and move to the otherside of competency and eventually sensations subsiding, any underlying trauma that you don't recall won't matter because you have already shown yourself there is no danger/threat. But if trauma is something you do know about and is making it harder to recover because of the safety aspect that you challenge with this approach, then resolving it before or at the same time with exposure might be a consideration. Depends on circumstances.

    I have a question can I take Ibuprofen and Tylenol during the recovery because I'm not on any medication and I don't want to be. but I just want to make sure that's not going to interfere in my recovery. The pain in my neck is so severe I cannot stand it it makes my anxiety worse and I have the pain from my anxiety because of my head pressure and tightness in my head.

    • @TheAnxiousTruth

      I cannot - nor should someone on the Internet with no medical qualifications and no knowledge of your specific situation - make suggestions or tell you what to do with regard to taking even over the counter medications. I can say that recovery does not mean "enduring pain". There's pain, then there's being afraid of pain. Do your best to see the difference and the point where you are reacting to pain because you not only dislike it but also fear it.
