    FWIW... I bought a new '67 XR7 at age 24. It was heavily advertised and the XR7 option sold me. I drove it all over the country comfortably. At the time we thought it was pretty safe. Still one of my best and favorite cars.

    I'm REALLY glad someone pointed out that adjusting your mirrors properly is all you really need to do. With the exception of some commercial vehicles and sports cars, nobody needs blind spot assist.
    Also, I'd say the best tip to get warm quickly in the winter is get heated seat covers, and don't turn on the blower for the heat until your coolant temperature starts rising. If you turn the heat on while the engine is cold, you're only making things take longer.

      +BF3blog Wrong adjustment. I am age 60 and a car like the cougar today would run around 28,000.00 today. Todays 21k car would be the cheaper ford falcon or plain fairlane of 1967

      back in the days when normal people could afford a wide variety of nice things...now all we have is 3600 lbs fwd 4 bangers... oh its so nice and technologic and what have you.... its still overpriced heavy piece of shit that spur the same passion into people as canned pasta sauce. as a bonus we cant even afford those...look the number of car sale compaed to the number of people.
      if their garbage 4cyl fwd hatchback were 6500$ i wouldnt complain but as for what they ask for it...
      we live in an age where pinto are priced the equivalent of 2 boss 302

    FYI, starting with the MK5 Jetta in the US, VW started installing electric assist heaters into the HVAC system on diesel powered cars. My current MK6 also has one, but it isn't all that strong and still takes a while to get heat. I also have experience with the older 2nd gen MB Sprinter and it must have a very strong electric assist heater. Even when the engine has been started in sub freezing temps and has been sitting all night, nearly full strength heat comes out of the vents within 30 seconds.

    I had a 1968 Cougar with 302 2V, C4 Auto, Black Vinyl top, black Vinyl bucket interior with console, factory air and disc brakes. This was my first car and it was one year older than me. I still have great memories of that car. This is a great format for old car videos. It would take a ton of research to get all the info right. I cancelled my subscription to Hemmings Muscle Machines magazine because they ran reviews/features on two cars that I actually owned and made so many mistakes that I couldn't trust anything they wrote about the cars I didn't know.

    Earl here with a more accurate description of the 67 Cougar. First off it came with a C4 automatic and not a C3 as mentioned and the 390 V8 used the FMX automatic. Even though this car was a unibody construction, you cannot compare it to the mustang at all. It drove and offered the smoothness of a full sized car and had strong sheet metal and the doors and fenders were thick and solid like the Lincoln. It was not a Ford but was a Lincoln mercury piece of machinery. My parents bought one new in fall of 1966 and I bought one in 1974 when I was age 18. These were highway cars and were definitely not mustangs. It was compared to the ford mustang because it was unibody under carriage construction but so was the heaviest of luxury Mercedes benz of that time!. Myself and many HS friends owned 65 and 66 mustangs and they were sporty around town and had thin metal doors and rattling sounds and they were fun yes but I'm just pointing out truth here as to where the 67 cougar had solid doors just like a Lincoln and was a car you could drive cross country and not be sore. These were luxury highway cars people. Us older people that lived and drive this stuff know what is really true. And teens did not drive these cars either but were age 30 and up persons usually only had these cougars

      But for each, the assembly line had to be altered. The 67 cougar is a great deal longer than your mustangs back then The unibody was longer. Comparing the cougar to the mustand would be same as comparing the ford falcon to the 63 to 67 fairlane plus to consider 12 gauge sheet metal used for mustang rather than 21 gauge sheet metal used for the cougar being they used mercury ad lincoln sheet metal gauges. There is literally that much difference. Older people didnt start letting those cougars go to the teens until after around 1975. As for the link? I dont believe too much of anything on the internet. The 289 V8 in the 67 cougar was also not like the mustang V8 because the cougar had the nickel added to the engine cast iron, but then the internet will say both 289s are the same and they are not. Lengthy reply so other enthusiast can know these things

      Different parts of the unit bodies are different thicknesses of metal, I.E. the exterior sheet metal is thinner than the floor pan, etc.
      But the Cougar and the Mustang use the same floor pan from the the front of the car to the back of the rear seat. Cougar is based off the Mustang floor pan, with additional shock tower bracing, torque boxes, etc.
      Cougars are heavier because they have more sound proofing & insulation and because they are slightly longer (3 inch difference in wheelbase, 6 inch longer rear springs, etc.)
      I like Cougars, I own two- a 1968 and a 1972- and I agree they're a more civilized ride than a Mustang due to insulation & different suspension ratings. Basically I was bored and like the pictures of the two cars on the assembly lines, so here's another link www.mustangdrivers.be/mustangtrivia/images/68Assembly1.jpg That picture is from a Life Magazine article from 1968.
      BTW, 12 gauge is nearly three times as thick as 21 gauge (the bigger the number, the thinner the metal.)

      20 something? I was a 20 something 30 years ago, but that is irrelevant. Anyway, you're still older than I am so Congratulations!
      Information from the internet is automatically disqualified? I certainly don't believe everything I read, like for instance I don't believe that a Cougar or Mustang is made from metal that's three times as thick as the other car. Is it?
      My original post said simply that the Mustang and Cougar were produced on the same assembly lines, at the same time, and linked to a photo showing that to be true.
      Do you think I photoshopped a Cougar into that photo?
      If I've said/typed something that is incorrect, by all means correct me. I'm open to learning; try it sometime.
      Your last sentence was correct, this is a waste of time. Respond with facts, or don't respond and I'll just move on.

    About the cold cars. A little advice from Duluth MN. Seat heaters do wonders towards making it better, not bad if the steering wheel does the same trick and if you don't have seat heaters, many modern cars turn off the power plug (what we used to call the cigarette lighter years ago) when the car is off so you can actually put a fairly cheap back warmer on the seat under say an inexpensive thin cloth seat cover and when the car comes on so does the heat, then it turns off when you're not in the car so as long as you get a good one that doesn't run a risk of starting your car on fire (look for the little UL logo on the packaging) and don't crank it to 11 you should be fine and not need a new car to get warmth when you drive before the heat comes out of the vents. And if your car is old just unplug it each time.

    The Cougar and the Javelin were the best of the "pony cars". I loved the Cougar from the first one I saw at Pugmire Lincoln-Mercury.

    We need more of these historical tech comparisons. As an owner of a 1970 MG Midget, I'm always interested in the advances in technology, especially since that's what ultimately killed the British sports car. I would also like to see the price adjusted for inflation. Oh, and Brian needs to where that ascott more often.

    14:00 the problem with these sensors is when they get covered in snow, mud, dirt etc they go off like crazy making them useless. You wouldn't know that in cali

      Had a 2015 lexus rx300 loaner it was snowing lightly, sensors in the front were going bonkers while driving. I was like wtf theres nothing in close proximity! Also the blind spot system would pick up a car dam near two car lengths back.

    One of the notes in the video says all cars now have A\C standard. Look up the 2015 Jeep Patriot, its still an option in the base model.

    When I bought my Chevy Sonic it was pretty obvious that I couldn't just adjust my mirrors like I did in my old Mustang so I did that thing where you line up all three mirrors so that you see everything. And now I see everything. Everything, it's really quite great.

    Here in Finland 99% of cars have at least an engine block heater. Many also have a fuel powered parking heater (Webasto), that can be used without plugging your car in.

      Cars back then also had a larger fuel tank. Compare how many miles a full tank gives you from a car back then to a car now. Not as big a difference as some think.

      And that bit about Big Rigs is categorically untrue, they average high single digit fuel economy...on diesel...before you load them up.

    It's amazing how automotive engineering evolved and how much cars today are refined. My 2003 Fiat has a 1.6L , inline 4 engine, has 103HP, weights 150kg less. And it's faster from 0-60 than an american muscle car with big V8 from the 70's :D

      +Tupac Amaru If you want to call that being evolved by your own assessment I suppose so.  I cant see it though.  When 300 more things that can go wrong are evolved I disagree based on reality.  The sheet metal in cars is also thinner.  Usually when I read comments as yours I know its someone from their teens to even age 40, but when you get in the age bracket of car guys that are age range 55 on up we can only know what we experienced verses what you people read and have been told.  Such as a full sized pickup in lets say 1970 got better gas mileage than any single cab pickup of today, but sadly younger people believe MYTH they were taught over the years in marketing. I saw you mentioned FASTER from 0 to 60. Why does a person need race trac specs when we aren't race car drivers??? This is sales marketing strategy that is useless to the American consumer. Marketing today fools people into focusing on performance and not reliability or how long something will last. My 02 ford supercrew 4.6 and my 98 ram ext cab 318 I have never tested them for 0 to 60. What for???? They are nice vehicles and have plenty of power. I want things that LAST. And how is it you say engineering is better? NO IT ISNT. Any 1960 American engine is BETTER than any engine today in its engineering in the cast iron and metal bearings.

      In the 70s cars with 1.6 had 70 up to 140 HP (Ford Capri, Toyota Celica). So your Fiat is no good here. You mean Stilo/Palio with 1.6. Now imagine only 3 speed automatic in it (or even manual). Would it be fast or use less fuel than a heavy musclecar ? Put 5x 100 kg people in your car and try your fuel consumption :D

    I live in Washington state and its illegal to leave your car running while unattended, many people do this because of the cold winters here but a few years ago there was a increase of car thefts and people complained about their cars getting stolen when the keys are in the ignition and running so they passed a law to fine anyone who was caught leaving a empty car running.

      In Europe we have the parking heater systems which run on fuel -- called: webasto parking heater.
      You can put it every day at given time f.e 6.30 am mon-fri or start it from a remote. You get in to a warm interior, no ice on glass, and no cold starts for the engine.

    Cold cars in the winter, no problem in Sweden!
    Get a new volvo diesel car, add the VOC (Volvo On Call) And you can program it with a timer when you arrive to your car and it will be warm and nice inside and the enginee is warmed up as well :)

    13:35 - Why not just make the entire rear view mirror curved? Curved just enough to increase the angle of view so you can see the blind spot on BOTH sides of the car but without distorting the image?

    Old enough to have been in the midst of the hp wars, I only agree to a point with you extolling on the “New” cars.
    More than the ‘60’/‘70’s cars the chock full of electronics and sensors, many of the new cars are only more reliable within their designed in obsolescence range.
    Electronics are a two edged sword, yes they enable many features, but also cause major headaches and often are unavailable as replacement parts once they reach the 7+ yr mark.
    Not to mention the ridiculous price tag attached to those parts.
    If it weren’t for the “brilliant “ invention by the auto industry of Leasing, I don’t think we be seeing half as many new cars on the road today.
    Debt, in perpetuity ,never owning the vehicle outright.
    Let me be clear, I wouldn’t trade my ‘07 C6 Corvette convertible (bought new) for my back than ‘70 Ls6 Corvette and , yes , the advancement in suspension tech and overall quality is definitely noticeable. (The ‘70 was a Conestoga Wagon with it’s ride and handling LOL)
    FYI I’ve owned 3 Cougars ‘68 289, ‘67 390 4sp and a ‘68 GTE427.

    I have to take issue with you on the available three on the tree transmission on a Cougar. I don't believe it. I had sales brochures on cars in 67. Ii was a teen just a year shy of taking driver's training class in that model year. Over the years after getting my license I had seen and test driven a lot of cars, I know for a fact that Mustangs came with both 3 and 4 spead floor mounted trans missions, I had actually seen those. As far as the Cougar, most of them I have seen have been automatic transmissions. The manual transmissions were very rare, and the one I remember sitting in on the dealer lot was a four on the floor. The sales brochures only stated the availability of 3 speed manual, 4 speed manual, and automatic transmission. None mentioned a column mounted transmission. The fact that you people weren't even born in the sixties, you are assuming that all three speed transmissions were column shift, because most of them were. That, however, was not on the sports models, like Mustangs, Thunderbird, Cameros, and Barracudas. You found three on the trees on cars like Falcons, Fairlanes, Novas, and low end full size sedans. In my driver's training class, we spent one day driving a Chevrolet Impala equipped with the three on a tree transmission. As we went through the sixties and into the seventies, the last car I road in that was brand new at the time and had three on the tree was a 1970 Maverick. Since then, the only other vehicle I have seen with that type transmission and newer was a late seventies Ford F-100 pickup truck. I really don't think Ford would have made a Mercury Cougar with a column mounted gearshift.

    it's a c4 not a c3 transmission and in 66 It was a cruise-o-matic which is the same as a c4 with a different valve body

    Where did you guys get your Tesla sales numbers? In the recent 2014 earnings report, they said they delivered over 31,000 cars and produced over 35,000! (they suffered some delivery problems at the end of the year. Thus, the discrepancy)
    This would have put Model S on the top of the sales list. Even more impressive when you consider it retails for over double the cost of the runner up.

    I'm sorry if this is a really stupid question...but RE cars warming up in the winter... does that mean EV's can kick out warm air pretty much as soon as you switch them on? Even in cold weather?

      EV cars have electric heat, as soon as the coils heat up electrically (in like 30 seconds or less from turning on the car) yes you get close to instant heat. Does not matter the outside temperature its instant heat.

      When you use the heater the range drops like 50% :P But yes, instant heat. Theoreticaly possible in a gas powered car, but I get warm air in 2 minutes 2 km (1.3 miles) drive. Gasoline engine. The diesels are warming up very long -- like 15 km (10 miles).

    not having the side of your car visible is ridiculous as you wont have a concept of the relative positioning of your vehicle and trust me, in peak hour traffic lane changing this is critical

    Something dumb like heater technology ended and argument with my home girl today !!! and I won. She insists on turning the heater on as soon as we get in the cold car just moving cold air all around. You can tell her wait till the car heats up but she wont listen until now :) Thanks Cooley !!!

      The cars battery doesnt run the air conditioning the compressor does which runs by belt off the engine

    the only Fail for driving is the Driver.., even you don't have those fancy dandy Air Bags or Stability controls, if your a Responsible driver, that's enough to make you out of accident.. and when we say responsible, it means she/he will always check and maintain his Car/ check everything/ drive cautiously and be more alart.. add to the list Don't Drink and Drive..
    they just making more and more technology to make Drivers more and more idiot in Driving lolz.

      you also have to consider the idea of someone hitting you, not just you hitting something. its also completely unrealistic to ask any human to do anything with out making a mistake over the course of their entire life time, especially if you take into account an unpredictable environment. so yeah those safety measures are necessary because you can never account for the unknown.

      facepalm... airbags are fine but not to mention that other accident was the cause of this lols.. you will all realize that if something went wrong to your very high safe tech car lolz XD
      and why? not just the car it self you will have to maintain but you also have to check those safety device to be sure that nothings going wrong, and how many people does know how and has time for this? they don't even check their brake fluid level every once a week l.. so the question is.. how safe those cars that have safety device than ordinary that have a responsible safety driving driver?? lols and oh i have a suggestion for a person that wanna own this very high safe tech kind of car.. you need more extra money 5x per maintenance so they could also check your very high techy safety devices.., if you have this much money then this is for you.. XD hahaha
