  • On Friday August 22nd, 2014, a Pullman Rail Journeys Excursion to Madison, WI using Iowa Pacific equipment set off on its journey from Chicago Union Station, I was downtown and around to catch all the action and capture the train leaving. Many other railfans came see the train leave, however most everyone waited at the Pennsylvania signal bridge at Racine Ave. grade crossing for it.
    So here's the rundown of what happened. The passenger cars for the excursion were already at the Amtrak Chicago yards, and were positioned to the North concourse on track 19, right next to the Chicago river.
    Iowa Pacific 515 and 518, Ex CNW 5029B and 5030A EMD E8s were moved into Union Station just around 5pm during rush hour to couple on, and reposition the train for loading passengers. So they pulled out just past Canal St. grade crossing, and pushed back in switching over all the way to track 1, the farthest track away from the Chicago river in the North concourse. This happened when it was still light out, surprisingly me and one other railfan friend were the only two people at Canal St. to get shots and all. I did tell a bunch of people to come because I had a feeling it would be too dark when it finally departed. (It was planned to, and did depart trailing behind Amtrak 341 a Northbound Hiawatha)
    So basically since I knew the engineer for the station track move, he gave me a decent amount of horn at Canal st. grade crossing, and yes it sure did echo off the buildings! Then as they backed up, I moved over to the other side knowing the angle I wanted and the Ponchartrain club (the end car) blowing its wimpy horn for Canal st. grade crossing lead in. Just as the E8s were passing an inbound Metra was coming in hot too, it didn't have clearance and eventually stopped, but it really gave a cool effect as to what was happening. Basically older commuter engines pushing their train in, and a current commuter train also pushing in right near each other. I had two camcorders going for that, the other clip which I set my older camcorder on the ground for was not used in this video because it would have made the video 2 minutes longer than it is. That clip I used in my 500 subscriber special, its sped up but it still is another angle of what happened if you want to see.
    The angle I went for when the excursion was pushing back was right under Wm J. Cassidy Tire Co, a building that goes back to the 1950s at least I'm sure. Iowa Pacific 515 and 518 being Ex CNW commuter E8s are real close to home there, as the tracks they originally traveled on were just over the tracks they were on in the video. (The tracks to Ogilvie Transportation Center, or to the Northwestern station originally)
    Also making an unexpected appearance when first getting to Union Station in the beginning was Amtrak 66 the Phase 2 heritage unit, which is common as heck for Chicago but was a nice surprise. Honestly though I've seen and caught the Amtrak heritage units a ton, I think I've caught 66 at least 10 different times lol.
    Here's a list of the railfans who I was there with for the evening:
    Trainandhawksfan17- / trainandhawksfan17
    Sethamtrak- / sethamtrak
    bnsfwarbonnet- / bnsfwarbonnet
    MrTrain513- / mrtrain513
    Taylorveldman3832- / taylorveldman3832
    and others who don't have CZcamss, but you know who you are. ;)
    Thanks for watching!

    Wonderful!Great catches. I often wonder what the public thinks when they see such a train these days when they didn't know to exoect it. I wonder if old timers thought they were seeing an Illinois Central train . Beautiful livery on the Iowa Pacific.Thanx for sharing.

    Those e units are my favorite diesels. Glad to see some still in existance and in action. Excellent memories of the Illinois Centrals City of New Orleans and her sister train the Panama Limited. Great stuff.

    Beautiful set of rolling stock! Very well photographed, too! Almost makes the heart ache with memories of the ’50s! Thanks!

    Later on in American railroad history, we saw the birth of the American Orient Express, a 25 million dollar makeover of the old but equally fabulous B&O, which had a short but successful life ended when the luxury liner derailed in Mexico, damaging better than 2/3 of the restored carriages. Ironically, at least through the 50s, all American trains were luxury liners. I personally mourn the passing of those days when American cities were luxurious and glamorous. I could write a book. But succinctly, as Edith Bunker would have it, "Those were the days."

    That shows the popularity of “vintage” trains. The engines and rolling stock shine from care and maintenance

    Very well done! Bad timing with the dog, but no fault of yours. Enjoyed the night shots as well with the city as a backdrop.

    Once upon a time, the Pullman service was one of the few top of the line jobs for middle class black Americans, some of whom went on to even greater heights during careers with the luxury liners. If anything could rival Tarzan's scream as he roamed through the jungle, it would be the plaintive sound of the conductor's, "Boooooaaaaarrrddddd!" Bob Hope would say of this video, "Thanks for the memories."

      Zephyr4501 Thanks! And oh yea I was pissed. She was walking these two little dogs and the train freaked them out and they started barking. I gave her this look like, could you at least walk back a bit and distract the dogs, but noooo she just stood there and let them fight with each other. I'm glad it wasn't more barking and noise than what was heard in the video.

    I have two O scale of those engines, along with all the coach cars, Pullman's, diner car, club car, and a mail car. I rode the City Of New Orleans, the Creole, and the Panama Limited to New Orleans back in the 50's, and mid sixties. Loved it all!!!

      ExcessMean It used to belong to NS's predecessor N&W. Now it belongs to the Virginia Museum of Transportation. Although N&S still owns the passenger cars and facilities 611 uses for excursion runs.

    Nice vid! So did u hear how now the trains are now going from Chicago to Denver? Do you have any clue if they'll be on the BNSF racetrack? If they are, it'll be easier for me to film. I can also do the Elgin sub or the line that goes thru Morton grove.

    • @Railroadfan5383
      @Railroadfan5383  Před 9 lety

      train fan504 Thanks, and no I don't know what you mean. Youre saying trains are going to travel on different tracks in Chicagoland that go to Denver? And the Elgin sub is the Milwaukee West line, the C&M sub is the Milwaukee North line. Metra owns the tracks from Chicago to Elgin and to Rondout then Fox Lake. West of Elgin its then the CP Chicago sub, and North of Rondout its then the CP C&M (same name but owned by CP). From Rondout to Fox Lake its the Metra Fox Lake sub, and past Fox Lake its Wisconsin and Southern.

      So Pullman rail journeys now has a few excursions set to go from Chicago to Denver. I'm asking how the train would typically get to Denver, like on what line?

    • @Railroadfan5383

    Why does Iowa pacific logo look like Illinois central logo

    • @Railroadfan5383
      @Railroadfan5383  Před 6 lety

      Because the owner of Iowa Pacific worked for the IC decades ago. So since he is the owner and he wanted to do that, he bought the rights to use the IC logo (except "Iowa Pacific" written on it) and orange/brown paint scheme.
