    When I worked for CSX we had nothing that nice and shiny.
    I guess it's because our division included the main shops & they'd route the almost-crapped-out engines our way, so when it was time, they could limp in for the overhaul.

    • @BossSpringsteen69
      @BossSpringsteen69 Před 4 lety

      One thing CSX has over up is they spent some nice money on some of the rebuilds. I've seen SD40-2 rebuilds with repainted interior slightly larger cab new interior lighting. What do you get at up? fresh coat of interior and exterior paint. Interior may have been painted over some of the previous layer of dirt. New inward facing camera and a small addition to the electronics maybe new seats . Everything else looks the same as in 1975.

    • @sorindncs
      @sorindncs Před 4 lety +1

      Tier IV are not EMD anymore. They belong to Caterpillar now. Caterpillar should do a rebranding to it's locomotive company so people should know them as CAT locomotives from now on. And nothing to love about them either....that growling V12 four stroke engine sounds nothing like the good old 710 engine....V16 and two stroke. The screaming sound of two stroke engines is what consacrated the EMD image...

    • @WhiteRiverRails
      @WhiteRiverRails Před 4 lety +2

      sorindncs Caterpillar owns the company called Progress Rail. This happened years ago. Progress rail released a press statement saying the company EMD is no longer, however they will still use the EMD name and logo on their locomotives, as well as Progress rail.

Model loader with the emissions systems. The sensor was replaced 9 times before the owner said fix it this time or give me my money back. That's when they replaced the entire dos system and that fixed it.

      The ACe's design honestly looked awkward with a chunk of the long hood missing. The hump doesn't really detract from the appearance any more than that of the ET44AC anyways - the 70ACe's is longer, but the ET44's sticks up like a middle finger. While I like that EMD resurrected teardrop windows, the way they designed the nose slopes to be reminiscent of GE makes the face look worse than older notch-nose SD70s.
      I do have to say, though, they managed to make Armor Yellow look somewhat appealing, with the way it's applied to those huge flared radiators. Which is an accomplishment for anything not a covered wagon or a DDA40X.

I'm not bashing GE,..I'm just tired of seeing all GE all the time!

    • @Romans--bo7br
      @Romans--bo7br Před 7 lety +6

      +NorfolkSouthern1068..... Sure would have been great though if EMD/Cat could have found a way to keep the 710 two cycle and meet the ridiculous ways that the tree hugging EPA try to get the NOX reductions.... why can they just produce better fuel, like they do in Europe, without loading up the engine manufacturers and their engines with all kinds of complicated add - ons and afterburn treatment systems.
      The new semis of the last 5 or 6 years are getting worse fuel mileage now than they were before they implemented tier 2..... while the very same federal government is Still buying NEW 2 cycle Detroits (6V53T and 8V92TA's) for use in military vehicles and "other" gov't applications... WITHOUT Any of Tier 3 or 4 regulated add - on's !! HYPOCRITES !!!
      Back to EMD... to me, EMD will Never be an EMD without that big 2 Stroke under the hood, any longer.... at least not here in the US.... they're still producing them and shipping them everywhere else around the world in the various configurations to suit different roads in their respective countries, with the 710 two cycle.

  • @jamesshanks2614
    @jamesshanks2614 Před 7 lety

    As I remember talking to an EMD engineer involved in the Tier-4 project they were redesigning the engine to meet Tier-4 specs without using DPF fluid. GE GEVO's don't use DPF and meet Tier-4 specs primarily because the railroad's didn't want the additional expense and trouble DPF brings to new diesels.
    My neighbor runs a loader at a gravel pit and 2 years ago they bought a new Volvo 220 front end loader and 7 months old they lost 217 hours of service because the DPF emissions system kept stopping him to regenerate. The fix? The service guy from the dealer had to replace the entire emissions system to get it to work properly and this was with a factory engineer working alongside the mechanic. Can you imagine a railroad loosing that many days of service on a new multi-million dollar locomotive? This is a perfect example of why the railroads don't want anything to do with DPF systems.
    DPF also adds a ton of equipment to the locomotive to meet Tier-4 specs, so why bother if you can design the engine to meet the specs without using DPF. Personally I think we are going at it the wrong way in Europe construction equipment and diesel locomotives don't have to meet Tier-4 specs as they aren't the reason for the majority of pollution. It's the millions of cars that are the problem iIMHO.

    • @GrammarPoliceInvestigations
      @GrammarPoliceInvestigations Před 7 lety

      DPF is the particulate filter, it doesn't use fluid. DEF is diesel exhaust fluid and is a separate system. Modern diesels use a combination of the two systems to meet emissions regulations. I don't know how they can engineer these systems out of new engines completely. Maybe there's some new tech?

    • @jamesshanks2614
      @jamesshanks2614 Před 7 lety

      Rick S
      Oops thanks for the catch there Rick spellcheck strikes again.
      GE was the first builder to meet tier 4 specs without using DEF as their customers here in the states said they wouldn't buy any locomotive that required it. Locomotives are expensive enough to buy and operate without having to equip all the fueling stations with an expensive additive. GE simply went back to work to find a way to meet tier 4 without any additive and they were successful, the EMD ran into the same problem with their new 4 stroke engine and had to do the same thing. I've driven a dump truck with a tie 4 engine and had the computer tell me after 5 hours of operation on the first day in service to pull over and start a cleaning cycle. Took 50 minutes before I could continue initially I ignored it until the computer cut my power to the point I could barely move in first gear. Imagine what the railroad would say if an engineer reported he was coming to a stop on a busy single track main line because he had to run a clean cycle on the emission controls! That is exactly why the railroads refused any new power that requires it. That dump truck I drove with it? Took 7 days to fix.

    • @GrammarPoliceInvestigations
      @GrammarPoliceInvestigations Před 7 lety

      If the diesel is run hard and hot, an active regen should hardly ever be required. A lot of idling or slow running will cause the DPF to build soot and thus require an active regen. Most of the time in cases such as yours, a sensor is found to be at fault. It's kinda cool that diesels don't stink like they used to but the tech needs improvement.

    I live in central Ohio and when I was a small child I got my first train set that was it I’ve liked trains ever since,,, I hope they never get rid of trains in the United States however I would like to see them run better,,, not just the trains but the system they run on,,, when I was in Germany as a young man back in the early 80s we took trains all over the place you could set your watch by the 🚂 trains 🚊 if they said the train was leaving at 8 o’clock and you were there at 10 or 15 seconds after 8 o’clock you would most likely see the back of that train pulling out of the station many times I remember throwing my bag up on the back of the train and one of my family members giving me a hand up most of their trains were electric at that time I don’t know what they are now I haven’t been back to Germany 🇩🇪 for many years now however I knew they were safe and every big city and small village had a BH train station ,,,America needs that again we had that once before,,,, you should be able to take a train in America anywhere you want to go,,, safely and reliably the government needs to get involved and correct the situation our railroad is in shambles it’s OK for freight but we seem to kill passengers a large percentage of the time,,,, got to do something about this,,, i’ve always wanted to try a train ride on Amtrak but I would be very scared to ever try it you always hear about terrible train accidents on Amtrak,,,, I wish I Amtrak had scenic vacation getaways from coast-to-coast I could leave here in Ohio and go across 40 just like you were driving but you take the Amtrak instead and stop at the Indian reservations and the casinos and the Grand Canyon petrified forest Las Vegas all the scenic things and places and they could have Hotels and things along way so you could stay as long or as little as you wanted to go up through California see all the stuff to see in California turn around and come home it’d be the adventure of a lifetime,,,, could you imagine it????

    Train probably can't go as fast as it could as nearly all freight locomotives today are geared at 70mph. The Amtrak unit is probably pushing the UP unit somewhat, being geared higher.

      It might be 79 mph but i'll double check the next time in one.

      EPA emmision compliance.
      The higher the tier is, the cleaner the exhaust is coming out of the engine.

    Stupid question of the day: why isn't Amtrak using its own locos?

      Or maybe the genesis locos are showing their age. As much as I like the genesis locos Amtrak is going to be getting the Siemens SC-44 Charger.

      It just happened to be at Dunsmuir and UP decided to give it to Amtrak #14 and headed all the way to LA on #11. :)

      RB Railfan
      When an Amtrak train has a locomotive go down the host railroad doesn't care how new or old the locomotive they provide is just that it is reliable and able to do the job.
      I was working a work train dumping ballast from side dump cars when dispatch called me and ordered me to stop dumping stone and get the train to a siding 8 miles away and then go rescue a dead Amtrak train. The mow foreman was mad but we did it then grabbed the Amtrak train 24 miles from the siding then had to haul it 64 miles to its last stop in Boston. My power?
      1941 built ALCO S-2 switcher no mu. We had to remove a drain cock on an air tank to feed compressed air to the Difco side dump cars. No other power was available for the work train. Man you should have seen the built up carbon being thrown out of the turbocharger by the time we got to where we were dumping the trap rock that old girl was running better than I had ever heard her run. No speedometer on that engine but I timed her to 52 mph at one point but you should of seen the looks at the few stations we had to stop at with that old ALCO on the point. The passengers were just happy to be back on the move even though there was no lights or air conditioning.. Only problem I had was after arriving in Boston was an Amtrak train master who asked me why a switcher was used instead of a road engine? I told him it was the only engine available closest to the train, we're here aren't we? He just looked at me and walked away.
      Why use an old ALCO switcher? The GP-10 they were going to use had a water pump fail and the old ALCO S-2 was the only other available engine.
      You never know what the day is gonna bring.

      If there's a broken down train blocking the mainline, I imagine UP sends whatever locomotive can get there first.
