I first went to the toon in the 80’s on a Royal Navy minesweeper. My last port of call before I left the navy. I met the wife there. Next time you visit make it between May and October and they actually open Greys monument up and you can climb the 163 steps to get a grand view of the surroundings. Some facts I learnt was his head was hit by lightning in 1941 and was replaced. His right hand has also been replaced.
But the story behind this was the guy who took the hand all the way upto the top to fit it realised it was bigger than his left, but he still fitted it. Take a look next time you go. Lol.
Also my son always says there is only one church in the toon. St James. I am sure you will venture to that side of the toon as well. Thanks for sharing your vlog.

When I first came to live in England I stayed near Newcastle in a small village called "Wide Open" for six months. Spent many a day and night in Newcastle! Lovely city. Neil have you ever done a video on Whitley Bay and the St Mary's lighthouse? I use to go there too to visit the sea! Thanks for another brilliant video! :)

You'll see a lot of Saint George memorials around. George and the Dragon are the ancient badge of the Fifth of Foot, which became the Northumberland Fusiliers. The local infantry regiment.

I'm a bit biased but Newcastle really IS a fantastic, beautiful city. You captured it very well as you always do with your videos. I was last there in September filming the Shaun the Sheep on the Tyne art trail for my channel. It was right in the middle of that hot spell we had. Shattered when we came home! 😂

There was a time when the area around the keep "The Garth" was a very dangerous place. Newcastle was a City and County in it's own right but the castle was still part of Northumberland so out of reach of the local authorities.
