I’m living through this song right now. I’m not made for giving up so I have worn myself down to nothing trying to save my marriage. I know she loves me and wants me to stay but she can’t physically say it or show it… it’s the words she won’t say are what stop me from leaving… things would be so much easier if she would let me be free even though it’s not what either of us want. There’s just not much left of us to save anymore. This song hits every inch of the pain.

That would make the whole chorus make no sense. He says i ain’t the bad guy don’t make him be. Set me free. I think you should read the lyrics and listen to the song again.
He’s got cheated on and is crushed to the point where there’s no fixing it but they have been trying. They are to the point where giving up is easier than staying and they both know it. He loved her so much that even the cheating wasn’t enough for him to end it but he knows it needs to be done. She did all the damage up to this point so what’s a little more? Show him and his heart a little mercy and don’t make him be the one to end it. That’s what I hear when I hear this song, anyway.
