Another bit that Bob did on Steve Allen's show was as a guy who had spent years training a bird to speak and do complex tricks. After a lengthy build up Bob accidentally lets the bird escape the cage and the bird flew up into the rafters of the studio. Bob does a complete deadpan as he comes to understand that his life's work is lost due to a moments inattention. The bit worked because of Bob's flat expression and his incredible deadpan.
Master of the deadpan. No one could just stay in character forever like that like Bob Einstein. It became quite a trademark. It's too bad Steve didn't have confidence in the audience to catch on. Hey, if someone at home didn't get it, well, maybe they should be watching something else. Steve was always pretty hip. Remember Steve's comeback to an audience member who asked him they get his show back in Cleveland. Steve: "Well, they watch it, but they don't get it."
In Bob's best bit with Steve Allen, Bob played a martial arts guy who repeatedly requested that Steve attack him with a 2×4 from different angles. Each time, Steve successfully clobbered Bob, demonstrating Bob's character's ineptitde as a supposed self-defense professional. It was a comedy classic and fifty years later, I still chuckle. I hope that segment was preserved and eventually finds its way to CZcams.
Super Dave was already doing his hilarious deadpan humor. But he was too good at it--so much so that they felt the need to explain the joke to the audience at the end. :)
There's a great vid on YT of Cars, Comedians, and Coffee with Einstein and Seinfeld. There are some great jokes told, although not all are fit for young audiences. RIP Super Dave!
I had no idea that Steve Allen was this sophisticated, I love the guy but a little bit before my time. Now I feel like I'm watching Steve's ghost when I watch Conan. BRAVO!!!!!
I totally didn't notice Bob as Officer Judy on the Smothers Brothers but I watched Steve Allen and noticed him on his show (right around this time period). I did actually get to see him on one of the shows I went to see taped because he'd been on the other show but had to do another take. It seemed that the more the audience laughed the straighter his face got. Plus he was good looking.
Bob Einstein passed away on January 2, 2019, at the age of 76, shortly after being diagnosed with cancer. Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm series creator Larry David said in a statement: "Never have I seen an actor enjoy a role the way Bob did playing 'Marty Funkhouser' on Curb. It was an amazing, unforgettable experience knowing and working with him. There was no one like him, as he told us again and again. We're all in a state of shock." And sitting next to Bob, is Pat Harrington, Jr., who could also deliver lines with perfect deadpan. Just for fun, you might enjoy this clip of Pat playing against James Coburn in the 1967 (ahead of its time) comedy film The President's Analyst: czcams.com/video/s2NNZdigSXg/video.html
Nice to see "Pat" recovered from his on-field gunshot wound. And nice to see Steverino's show was still broadcasting in beautiful black and white in 1970.
The funny or sad thing is Pat Harrington was the lead guest and a very popular talented comedian and performer. No one hardly knows him outside of One Day at a Time.
The great super Dave! The Funk man!RIP Super.
Funk man may you rest in peace!
Bob was the master of dead pan and a great comedy writer.
its one thing onto itself to master deadpan but his ability to keep a straight face as he was saying this hilarious shit is what sells it
RIP

The best deadpan comic ever. Yes, better than Jack Benny.
I remember that! I wondered if anyone in the audience recognized him from the Smothers Brothers show.
Bob's brother Albert was a genius but his brother Frank was a monster!
Now I understand Bob's confidence ,I didn't know he was a very handsome man, extremely handsome! I own a dog house so don't go judging me away!
No arguing with logic provided by the University of Science!
@@1515gator1 well I am a deeply closeted gay man, but that's not coming out anytime soon!
NORM!!!
I would love to have chicken with him.
You sound like a how do you do

Listening to this while I was driving made me laugh so hard that I had tears in my eyes and couldn’t see the road.
The man's delivery was top notch. RIP
Steve Allen brought a lot of talent (and talented people!) to the airwaves! He was truly a GREAT show host!
I agree. To give over airtime to an unknown writer to do a very long bit that perhaps half the audience might not get, that was quite generous.
Hilarious!!
I watched this live, and to this day it makes me laugh. RIP Officer Judy, Super Dave, and Funkhauser!
Geez how old are ya?jk
Pat Paulsen for president: "Picky, picky, picky." Classical Gas.
I did too!! He did one where he was an Olympic Table Tennis player and went nuts when Steve beat him playing ping pong!
@@DaveLewis60 It is hilarious when the audience finally gets it!
Thank goodness for Steve Allen for recognizing who would make a good show kudos Mr Allen
Few people know his brother was Albert Einstein
I saw this on tv as a kid. It had to have been live. We watched a lot of tv back then. All I remembered were the razor blades. Thanks for posting. 👍
What a brilliant actor & comedian.
whoever you are, who found this and uploaded it, thank you! 3 great kings of comedy in a seemingly very rare clip wow!
Great smile at the end... ! Wow!
First time I believe I've seen such genuine light from that normally deadpan visage.
Bob Einstein and Bob Euker. Two masters of the deadpan!!
The White House interns which Joe could master the bedpan.
@hudson5573
Sounds like a Republican doing that projection thing again.
I love how serious Super Dave is .
Best straight face in the business ever.
Super Dave, one of a kind. His dead pan serious approach was classic.
I still have my Bill Dobson rookie card.
I'm 46. Have never seen this and really enjoyed it. Thank you, for posting this!!!
Einstein played such funny characters like this, and then he became Super Dave Osbourne. R.I.P. Bob.
I saw this show. I remember it vividly.
Be older.
Superb! Disappointed he didn't bring Steve Allen a gift.
God bless you Bob x
That's the same dude that was on curb 40 years later...amazing! 👏 Rest in Power, Bob.
“Rest in Power” my ass.
I do not remember him this long ago. So Funny what a great comic style. unique act, miss him.
Legend, like father like son.
His dad was brilliant too; just discovering him late in the game 😁♥️🤩🎤🎭
I can't believe nobody's talking about Schneider being part of this bit!
"I'm here to fix your plumbing, Ms Romano..."
0:23 THE FOLKS AT HOME!
I love how he acts like's it's totally normal he missed to pass's that were practically handed to him. LOL

Bob was brilliant.
Mad TV maybe stole that skit with Jim Carey as a karate school teacher.
The birth of Super Dave.
Super Dave was already doing his hilarious deadpan humor. But he was too good at it--so much so that they felt the need to explain the joke to the audience at the end. :)
I think it hurt his popularity. You had to "get" Super Dave. I think to many, he seemed like a guy who wasn't very good at doing stunts, lol.
@@scribe570i remember being a little kid and finding a Showtime special of his, i was excited to see a stuntman.
The best deadpan in the business.
This is great! Thanks!

Comedy gold. One of very few who have had 2 episodes.
THANKS FOR SHARING, ABSOLUTELY AMAZING SUPER DAVE. LUV CANADA.
That was awesome 🤩
Bob’s father was Harry Einstein also known as Parkyakarkas. A very funny man and he was on radio with Al Jolson. His brother is Albert Brooks.
actually his brother's name is albert einstein....
It's shows you Dad was a comedian when he names his kid Albert in 1947.
Einstein played college basketball so he could pull off an athlete really well.
I wonder if Schneider was in on the joke.
00:25 Geez, 40 years apart, Steve Allen and Norm MacDonald both looking out for the "folks at home" who might not know.
A star is born...
Bob was so good
I had no idea that Steve Allen was this sophisticated, I love the guy but a little bit before my time. Now I feel like I'm watching Steve's ghost when I watch Conan. BRAVO!!!!!
thank you from manhattan.
Super Dave,and Snyder.
quite polished at a young age with his routine
This man sure can speak well

So great to see Bob break Steve Allen. Hilarious. Bob never breaks character.
Wow! I did not know how far back he went.
In a perfect world people who make us all laugh would get a pass into heaven . Maybe Super Dave Einstein is with his beloved dad right now .

Magical truth

Steve Allen sporting his famous rug.
Gosh! Genius xoxo
stutter step to shank. powerful move.
Don’t forget Bob as Officer Judy on the Smothers Brothers Show.
Way to GO, Einstein.
The funny or sad thing is Pat Harrington was the lead guest and a very popular talented comedian and performer. No one hardly knows him outside of One Day at a Time.
Amazing how Bob could keep a dead pan fave the entire time…
Officer Judy!!!! 😄
He might be the best straight funny man of all time.
Super Dave with Steve Allen?? Good lord.
My God, the same voice!
Young Bob looks like young Tom Jones
The Bob Uecker of football here.
I was born in 92' and I've seen a lot of paradigms of comedy but that "smoke was coming from his helmet" line is a pisser LOL
Is the third person in this Pat Harrington ?
I never knew he was on the Steve Allen show.

He was the janitor in the show above 1975-1984
The good old days when everyone watched the same shows and the same news.
Even easier to brain wash us
@@ordinarypete Well, I see they've succeeded.
I hear he worked on the Redd Fox variety show, I’m now sure how? A stage hand maybe?
So great to finally see his real nose before his nose job. He was so good looking
1970 it was black and white yet a year before the smothers Brothers it was in color
Not all that was on tv was in color yet during these transitional years
Funny stuff.
Little Orphan Funkhouser
I wonder where he gets his material
still laughing Bob...RIP sir
Pat Harrington is also super - building super that is.
Funny Even then😂😂😂
Fine line between subtle & scary to start the bit
It's odd hearing his voice without any trace of rasp in it.
Makes you wonder what the hell happened. By the time he's in Curb, it sounds like it's hard for him to even talk at all.
@@scribe570 He ran that voice into the ground clearly.
Great old segment but the punchline is in the title!
Super Dave Osborne: Well, he was no Einstein. No, wait a minute, I guess he was RIP Bob Einstein.
He is also Albert Brooks brother!
The other guy is Schneider from One Day at a Time.
I recall Bob Einstein doing a bit on Steve's show about being raised by wolves. Does anyone have that video?
Wow never seen him this young. He kind of looked like a young Tom waits lmao
Still funny today
It took me nearly six minutes to begin to get the joke. And another 20 seconds to realize who the hell that was. Deadpan God!!! RIP Bob. ✌🏽
Lol look at him looking at the ball.
I've met Bob he was closer to 6'6".
Him and Albert's dad died under very bizarre circumstances.
Great early super dave
So that was a pack of cigarettes in Schneider's t-shirt.
Ballon ball... baloon ball...
Snyder!
The father of Super Dave Osborn looks and sounds like him
Fuckin' Granowski - he was always causing trouble.
