      It's Game of Thrones in space. I think Dune was the blueprint carbon copy model for Martin. That's okay by me, the history of Sci Fi/Fantasy has ''borrowing'' stamped across its forehead. For me it's more like building on previous brilliance rather than stealing. It might be fun to do a mini research effort comparing the two and uncovering the similarities. We can start with Duke Leto of House Atreides being backstabbed and murdered by another powerful House alongside Lord Eddard of House Stark being backstabbed and murdered by another powerful House. How about Paul Atreides --> Kwisatz Hadderach as messiah and Jon Snow --> the Prince who was Promised as messiah.

      I think you might both be right.
      Dune is about a leader who is an _actual_ messianic leader, who really is superhuman. Without going too much into the further books, consider this:
      Paul outright resists the idea of becoming the Kwisatz Haderach because his imperfect prescience forsees in flashes what his leadership would unleash.
      Once 'awakenend' Paul takes on his messianic role, seeing no better option, fully aware of the horror that is to come.
      I think Herbert fully intended this: a leader with perfect prescience is a horrible concept, locking all of the galaxy along a single path with no escape. You can argue the ultimate tyranny is found at the end of Paul's heroic journey.
      And a little spoiler: it drives Paul mad in the end.....
      Perhaps trust our own decisions, instead of superhuman princes? Choice, excercising our own will, really does make us human...

    4:53 - The first book in the Dune series is indeed simple & classic, following the classic hero's journey; however, holy moly, the arch over the first 4 novels is anything but simple. It really is a wonderful take on how messianic leaders, even with the noblest of intentions, are evolving beings with flaws. Herbert put it best: “I wrote the Dune series because I had this idea that charismatic leaders ought to come with a warning label on their forehead: "May be dangerous to your health." Especially as the series goes on, I feel like the BG are a perfect example of how to do "strong female characters", while still allowing them to be flawed. Personally, I loved the Lynch version. In this day and age where there is zero mystery or escapism and movie trailers give away the entire plot and all of the twists in 3 minutes, Lynch's Dune felt so weird and foreign that, despite it's shortcomings, the movie stuck with me and kind of gave me that feeling you get as a kid seeing something new for the first time. For that alone I consider Lynch's movie to be better than a great deal of others.
    I don't watch a movie or play a game to just see and hear all the same crap I've seen and heard before. Nothing wrong with taking risks, even if they sometimes fail. Spot on about Momoa- he described Duncan as ‘Han soloesque’.
    Idaho- the most faithful and loyal warrior that brought Leto 2 to clone him again and again. He couldn’t be more the polar opposite of Han, the self serving smuggler even if he did have a conscience. Sci fi to Momoa is Star Wars- that’s it
    The thoughtful sword master of Ginaz- who is far more than just a warrior- they were masters of warfare in all its forms- tactics, psychological warfare- you name it- they were described as ‘philosophers’
    And sorry- If we ever get to Godemperor. No way Momoa can play the foil to Leto 2.

    I'd strongly disagree that Paul is a "classical hero". The story is of a classical hero, yes, but not the character himself. It was exactly Herbert's idea to show how leader-heroes stereotypes are made and how dangerous they are as a concept, when the real personality gets disconnected from the mythical persona created by others. Paul becomes a figurehead for a bloody universe-wide catastrophe he is unable to stop. But he himself definitely isn't just a "freedom fighter" hardened by loss, necessity and revenge. He's also not exactly a messianic figure (well, he is for the fremen of course), he is knowingly exploiting eons of religious preparation laid down by the Bene Gesserit agents among Fremen. He is aware all the time that he is doing exactly that. And in fact, at the end of the first third of the book he, strictly speaking, stops being human in a conventional sense of the word, gaining ancestral memory of millions of his genetical predecessors and an ability to (vaguely at first) see the future through a combination of mentat calculation and spice influence. It is this transformation exactly that I am afraid Chalamet might not be up to the challenge to portray. The awakening of his superhuman abilities a) makes him in some sense millions of years old through experience and memories of others. b) embitters him and makes him cynical and calculating (which only gets worse with further hardships and tragedies) also because he realizes that his life is not his own anymore no matter what he will choose. It is an extremely difficult role to play (and one I believe Alec Newman came rather close to playing perfectly). Chani is already very worrying even in trailers. Like in the last one she delivers something like "they ravage our lands", which obviously makes no sense at all. What did Harkonnens "ravage", the sand?? They didn't even realize how many fremen there actually were, and while they killed some and made their lives harder and fremen hated the Harkonnens, fremen were always in complete control of the deep desert. Everyone completely underestimated their numbers, influence and capabilities, they weren't victims, but that's how it sounds from the trailer. Fremen weren't some kind of oppressed miserable people, they were vengeful, ruthless, dogmatic, xenophobic and later - religious fanatics, but I'm afraid that the modern-day Hollywood is going to turn that into "The Message".

    • @mikoajp.5890
      @mikoajp.5890 Před 2 lety +11

      The book Chani was also pretty strong, pretty independent (untill 'marriage', at least) and pretty. What we've seen in the trailers still leaves hope for a sensible character. Even if they change her a bit, it will still fit the overall fremen background. I just hope they won't Mary Sue Chani...

    • @vskane
      @vskane Před 2 lety +20

      I didn't even realise until tonight that this movie is only the first half. So, what is Chani doing in it? - outside a couple of dreams in any event. And, yep, completely agree - the Harkonnens had absolutely no idea what was going on in the southern "uninhabitable" part of the planet. They may have been dicks to the locals - but ravage the land?
      I wonder how the movie is going to deal with the role of Fremen women in sietch... Probably not going to stay faithful to the source material is my guess.

      This guy gets it. The Fremen were hiding and waiting out the Harkonnen occupation of Arrakis. They didn't trust the Atreides, either. I hadn't heard that Chani quote in the trailer yet, but it's deeply concerning if DV wants to portray the Fremen as some kind of trail of tears victim group.

    • @furrymessiah
      @furrymessiah Před 2 lety +28

      Thank you for succinctly putting into words what I came down to the comments to say. If anything, Paul is the ultimate deconstruction of the Hero's Journey; the path/destiny he follows makes him a hero to the Fremen, but a genocidal, galaxy-controlling despot to anyone who won't bend the knee, and eventually it overtakes him and becomes impossible to divert from without destroying him. It takes Leto II how many centuries to unfuck humanity, and he does it by being even more tyrannical?
