I always enjoy your videos Scott. You're right about proper presentation. I have seen eBay listings with poor pictures and in the comments for condition it says "used". Nothing more. These lazy sellers could put in a couple minutes of work and make more money. If a unit has bad pictures and is not powered in in the photos, you have to assume it's not working.

Yes indeed. One has to assume the worst if there is no effort to confirm specifics. Functionality may be, for some, a little challenging to confirm. But in this day and age where almost any phone has a good camera, no excuse for poor quality pictures.

That Pioneer tape deck is beautiful!

Luxman’s 02 Series in 1982 was Imo, very beautiful. Their KX-102 Cassette Deck was to simply die for! I am wanting one, as well as a T-02 stereo tuner to complete the series.

That was the "suck face" line. They had a faceplate that would retract into the body to reveal the knobs/controls. Very cool, but the execution of it could be problematic and it would stop retracting. Quite a brave statement Luxman was trying to make, for sure.

I know a guy who had his 275 refurbed, and he did sell it for $6,000. Mac is a solid brand.

I did back flips the other day when I found a near mint NAD 3020A at the solid waste disposal electronics trailer when I was getting rid of a 40 year old Sharp cathode ray TV. As there is a fellow in California who restores/refurbishes NAD gear for $200 I was in heaven. That's more my price striking point. Large Advents and Rectilinear XIa speakers. That's how I roll. But I appreciate people who can go into the stratosphere when it comes to vintage gear. I used to have a lot more money. Now I'm poor and retired. And I enjoy the music just as much.

Great that you happened along and saved it! Dollar value certainly does not dictate how much we enjoy the music. Well done!

I would think anyone shelling out that kind of money would be asking the important questions and requesting additional photos of the unit under auction. This at least from my perspective. Otherwise shame on them! Great stuff and enjoyable video as always.

I can tell you what's not selling for 5k, my Pioneer SA9900 integrated amp and TX9500II tuner matching set single owner like new fully serviced in the original boxes with owners manuals! However 5 people have them on their watch list and so far I'm doing what my technician repeatedly said, keeping them for myself lol 😅😂

Very interesting video. I struggle with whether I consider myself a collector or just a person that likes old stuff because I had them and liked them a lot. I had a Marantz stack 3200/140 Pre/Amp that I loved. They were just ok sounding but they looked great. I personally would not pay what the market is asking for them today. I am a bit put off by the prices out there. It seems crazy to me that a Pioneer device would command a price that is 4 times that of a similar McIntosh piece of the same era. Mac is a bargain! I’d take it anytime.

RT-909 Silver looks very nice, Red it looks better (my opinion) but this Black (maybe the lighting on pics) but what a Gem. When I do finally buy a reel to reel it will be a RT-909. You found some stuff I did not know existed, Naka (DAT).

That black certainly is stunning. I had gone back to the ad, it looks as though it is actually painted. Same here on that Nak DAT deck, a new one for me as well.

The former top of the line 270 watt Pioneer monster receiver, I hope it doesn't get that kind of money from people thinking 270 watts should be 5 times better than 50 watts. There are 50 watt amps that sound way better than that unit. The hpm series of their speakers around the same time had a great super tweeter, but the rest of their range was indicative of that nasal Japanese coloration that Technics and other speakers also had back then. The opposite of natural sounding. That people think that stuff was really sensational and worthwhile, shows how few have an ear for accuracy. Of course some people don't care about fidelity to the harmonics of the sounds instruments make in real life. Impressive sounding, yes. Good sounding, no. JBLs from the original JBL 100 era, are the same thing. Some people love their sound, some people think they sounded awful. Vintage audio shows how far apart people's tastes are and evaluation is.
Even if these vintage items came through sonically in a big way, like what their fantasy prices would imply, and they almost never do; would they be worth it? I have a pretty good idea of what the sound is like when it is near fully captured and all the sound quality of the source is reproduced. Forget the fantasy, all it sounds like is normal. Distortions in all their varieties, sound weird, and when they are effectively lessened to nil, the sound simply sound like there is no more weirdness in the sound. Fantasy out of this world prices; to get a down to Earth sound. Not that that level isn't a nice level to get to. It is; but if people would hear what that level sounds like, would they still go fantasyland prices, for something so down to Earth? For something that simply sounds more normal.

I spent the whole video trying to figure out the make and model of the piece you were standing directly in front of. It's definitely a Yamaha. a CR-840?

Most people are familiar with the JBL L100., Well I have a pair of the Big Brothers to that., The JBL L150 which no one ever talks about? I brought them in 1979 for 700.00 a pair.. I recently seen a set online for 3 to $4,000 a pair. Are you familiar with these speakers?

    • @stereoniche
