  • Bigme is no stranger to fully-loaded units. And this one seems to take the cake.
It feels strange to think how much faster EINK devices can get.
But the Bigme certainly pushes EINK into an all new realm

If they show a video of a CZcamsr constantly waving his hands, it would easily reveal ghosting. Darker videos would also be a great way to show the worst case scenario.

The 2 things that are keeping me from these new improved faster e-ink devices. First, they are killing the battery life. Second, they are very fragile. I have the Tab Ultra C. The battery life on it was terrible and the screen cracked by simply being in my schoolbag. Never dropped it or anything like that. Did Bigme improve on either of these faults compared to Onyx?

@goodereader he has a point, though. Why not show a more challenging video? People rely on these reviews to make an opinion. I use it now, so I know it is capable of rendering complex videos at an acceptable level with some drawbacks. All in all, it's about how much light comes to the screen (sun light is perfect) and knowing you will not go beyond 30 fps. But I think it is still great

The last news about Kaleido 4 was last year, when they announced they want to hire engineers for the next generation. No news or announcements are made so far. Gallery 3 is taking up more attention right now, and companies are betting big on it, even when the tech has a lot of issues at the moment. It might take a few years for devices to come out, or that gallery 3 will be fully usable.
My opinion is in the minority, but I don’t think the next generation should focus on higher resolution but focus on light transmission, which results in brighter whites. That is Gallery 3’s selling point. One way is to shrink the borders between the color filters, or improve the color filters itself.
Interesting fact, we’re more sensitive to black and whites than color differences in terms of details. That’s why YUV colorspace was invented and why color TV signals are backwards compatible with black and white TV. They use only a sliver of the spectrum for color information. So 150ppi is alright for color, so long as black and white pixels underneath is helping with the details.
Edit: to the reply about the comment below, ‘you’re right that cost is a concern. I personally have trouble with Kaleido 3 indoors myself, and the front light drains a lot of power. Hopefully Kaleido is as bright as carta.”
CZcams, please stop deleting my harmless comments!!!

@@yensteelI'm not a firm believer in Gallery. Firstly, it's more expensive to produce. Secondly, the cheaper Kaleido 3, even with a darker white, is still perfectly readable and in my opinion, has more character in its interpretation of paper because it looks like a textured newspaper or "jeans". The Inkpad Color 3 and the upcoming release of Kobo Colors show that Kaleido 3 can have respectable frontlight brightness, unlike the older Kaleido 3 readers which are dim even in full brightness settings. This new Bigme device is also using a Kaleido 3 technology and is definitely looking good

Three reasons, scale, manufacturing infrastructure and techniques, and monopoly/patents. The manufacturing techniques of lcds is much more mature and actively researched than e-ink.
To get costs down other corners are cut such as the chipset. That’s not too much of a problem for note taking and reading. People see a device with limited capabilities and intuitively think that it should cost less. So it is not easy to convince buyers unless they know how it specifically benefits and suits them.
