    Big fan of Runequest… played a lot in must have been the late 70’s early 80’s. Picked up the original Red Bear White Moon board game when it first came out at some Convention in Miami about that time as well. Built the first Vassal module way back when. Fond memories… Can’t beat the creativity at the time.

    I haven't had any contact with RQ in many a year...but I may need to check out this new version. It's visually stunning, and I have good memories of the system.

    You never forget your first love. A beautiful introduction to one of the richest, most beloved RPGs ever made. Weird that character creation is not in the first part of the starter set, but that's not a criticism and I can see why they'd prefer to 'hit the ground running' than get bogged down in such things. The covers could be more sturdy but the illustrations and graphic design are top notch. A great starting point for a game with great depth and breadth of game scenarios to move on to.

    I've loved RuneQuest for more than 40 years. The new edition of the game is a very good version (with some of the problems that you might expect from a game more than 40 years old). And this looks like a gorgeous intro box. I've been playing in a campaign for about a year now and have been having a lot of fun. And I'm almost certainly going to have to get a copy of this set for myself.
    That said, I hope that the technical writing in this box set is better than that in the full game. And I hope that by distilling the game elements down into a relatively concise form it gets past the problems created by the index in the full game, which is the worst RPG index I've ever seen. Finding anything by using either the Table of Contents or Index is nearly impossible, which results in needing to memorize the locations of critical sections of rules that need to be accessed during play.

      @ardwulfslair  Před 2 lety +3

      You're absolutely right about the technical writing, but that's also a common rules-writing problem both inside and outside of RPGs. Would like to talk more about this later.

    Thanks for showing this. Chaosium's website showed the tiny image on the back of the box (blown up). They'll take your email if you're interested to contact you "when it's available", so perhaps I can get more than a PDF. This package looks like it will be easy getting into this rpg.

    Looks fantastic. Artwork looks glorious. Thanks for sharing. Haven't played any RPGs games since last century, D&D. Still have my white box set with the supplemental booklets and a handful of Ral Partha mini's.
    Again, the box set looks great and your video is excellent as always. 👍👍👍👍

    I ran the soloquest from this box last weekend (before this one) but managed to make it into a multiplayer game with two of my friends. It was a SMASH! We had a wonderful time with the premade characters - they had twelve to choose from, not fourteen - since two of the premade characters are in the story for this soloquest (they are NPCs in my version). As of now, we're going to start the battle in the next session. I really tell you - get this box! It's just fantastic.

    Looks great. Bummer about the cheap paper, but this box is probably a gateway drug to the beautiful hardcover rules.

    • @ardwulfslair
      @ardwulfslair  Před 2 lety +2

      I don't think it's cheap paper as such, I'm just concerned that it will wear rapidly. Note that if you buy it from Chaosium you get the PDF as well, which may mitigate wear and tear for some users.

    I reeeaaaally want to find some RQ players now, god dammit I miss this game. [checked in on third edition]. I have the new slipcase set, but I really want this anyway because it will be great to get new players started, and it has a ton of extras [especially for campaigning around Jonstown and northern Sartar]

    Oh my! My last experience with RuneQuest, is with Rurik and the red book. I am a huge fan of games set in the Bronze Age, and even RPG'ed some games set in that period, but to have access to this! Wow!

      As an "invent a rudimentary conlang to build names with" guy, yeah, some of the names in Glorantha feel goofy. Then again, goofy names in the real world abound: Pee Pee Township, Ohio springs to mind.

    • @ardwulfslair
      @ardwulfslair  Před 2 lety +2

      $30 at Origins. This might be less than MSRP, but I'd have been happy at $50 considering the huge contents.

    If the pages were higher grade, most likely the box would have to be bigger, and the cost of the paper to be printed on would make that starter set most likely cost close to twice that much, the dice are supposed to represent the Bronze Age. I think the majority of people that will buy this will already have the core rulebook. And those who are just getting into RuneQuest, shall go on to buy the core books.

  • @matthewwallhead5952
    @matthewwallhead5952 Před 2 lety +2

    If I were to buy the latest version of RQ what, beyond this pack, should I buy?

    • @ardwulfslair
      @ardwulfslair  Před 2 lety

      There is a core book called RuneQuest Adventures in Glorantha. I went for the slipcase set which includes that book, plus a fat GM pack with a screen, an adventure and handouts, plus a bestiary. Miniature Market has this slipcase set priced at $90, which is a nice discount off the MSRP of $120.

    • @matthewwallhead5952
      @matthewwallhead5952 Před 2 lety +2

      @@ardwulfslair It seems like there is a bit of overlap between the slipcase set and this starter set. Either way it's incredibly costly, but very tempting if I can justify its cost with actual play hours not just buying it as a beautiful nostalgia purchase. Thanks for the video and all your feedback. Very helpful.

      It's RuneQuest: _Roleplaying_ in Glorantha! There have already been two attempts to publish a RuneQuest edition subtitled "Adventure in Glorantha". Both of them failed to appear! So, we're stuck with RQ:RiG. 😉
