Turning D&D into a tactical skirmish game is a yawner to me. The genius in D&D is the roleplay. Playing D&D in the 4D style is qualitatively a better game. The mechanics are not that important as long as they don't get in the way.

Lock n Load tactical is nice because it has modern modules. OST is nice because of try larger maps in some if the scenarios They are my favorite lighter than asl system. But asl is still my favorite And you are 100% correct that full asl is not that much more then sk. It’s much less than people think, and the rule book may look intimidating but if you learn from sk rule book then full rule book is a great reference and you just look up what you need

I'm 80% through my first TK game after buying the AE box. Fantastic game. So very much of my game has been ahistorical but the game and mechanics have never faltered in handling it. What a mature design. Can't wait to try more (DS, SK, AE, and so on). Congrats to the team.

What an all-star guest list. I am incredibly happy that SD Hist Con is becoming so well-known and loved. Some daymaybe I can make an event. I prefer smaller cons and also just recently last few years boughten several war games, to be honest most are still in shrink but love games and have new found love for history.

Hope you enjoy APTO. I think this and AETO are an interesting system and the maps and counters are great which help. As you note, being a monster game, the rules are long but a lot of that is repetition. Unbelievably, despite the repetition, some key concepts, particularly the air to air sequence, are not clear and when I got the game I found it necessary to trawl through the game's thread on CSW where the designer Eric Harvey was very committed to answering questions and if his answers were lacking, the players came up with a practical solution. There are some good play aids around, in particular I recall a pretty essential corrected OOB/reinforcement/national income table. BTW, there are some errata counters you can still get from DG.

Regarding squad leader being an on-ramp to ASL, and the scenarios in squad leader being programmed learning. One of their strategies with Squad Leader was The General. For a long period of time every issue of the general came with two scenarios for Squad Leader/Squad Leader games.

58:43 Two years ago at GAMA Expo, they talked a lot about their plans for SL, including a bunch of stuff for 2024. Then Heroscape happened, which they weren't expecting the license for. Based on the discussion with them at GAMA Expo back in March, it'll be at least another year before they tackle Squad Leader, b/c they became the proverbial "dog catches car" with the runaway success of Heroscape kicking their ass right now. And if you had that kind of cash cow, you'd milk it, too!

1862 is a rough one to have as your one 18xx game.

If you consider Pathfinder D&D then PF2 is the best one. It refines 4e even farther and adds in some ideas 1e was playing with. And because it is Pathfinder the D&D people with get even angrier.
