- What I’ll be doing in this video is a mid season review for X-Men '97, going episode by episode with the first five episodes, reviewing them and rating them all from the perspective of someone who is a fan of the X-Men but maybe not a die hard fan as I’ve never actually seen X-Men: The Animated Series.

Not focusing on Wolverine was the best thing this series could’ve done

Yep, outside of comics X-men for the past 20 years has basically just been Wolverine and friends.
After what we’ve seen so far, I’m CERTAIN Wolverine will get his time in the action spotlight, and that it will be glorious. Letting him kind of hang in the background for now is indeed one of the smartest things the show has done so far, and Wolverine has always been my favorite X-Man.
IMO Wolverine is too sidelined in the show, they went too far (so far). Besides this version of Wolvie is very PC, not as badass as the original of the 90s
wolverine is more of a solo character anyways..never should've been the leader of the xmen...he's more like winter soldier and punisher and hulk

In Chess, a "Gambit" is a move in which a player makes a sacrifice, usually using a pawn to gain greater strategic advantage on the playing board. I feel like Gambit's sacrifice in episode 5 is really poetic in that sense.

I'm rewatching the original X-Men (an episode a day). I watched the second season finale. Gambit says in that episode "The name's Gambit, remember it!" His last words are a callback! That's so cool!

I definitely don't think Gambit got stabbed on purpose.
I think he was just going in knowing if he could touch the Master Mold, he could detonate it. Getting stabbed accomplishes that goal, it's just the worst case scenario.

I agree for the most part. Personally, I'd switch the third and fourth slots around, but I see why people would like the first episode so much. It did, after all, make Cyclops actually cool.

Tbh all the episodes are good it’s just episode 4 is the weakest. Also i would switch episode 1 and 2 on the list
You had to be a super fan of the original season to really get the messages and meaning behind Episode 4. The Mojo World part was a DIRECT message to us super fans!

Look, every xmen fan who doesn't care for wolverine had to deal with 2 decades of wolverine thrown in our faces even still with Deadpool and wolverine... and it was great...but honestly he can stand to be sidelined for a while, let some other characters shine who need and deserve it.

@MrShaun42088 for actual wolverine fans from before the movie saga, this is what wolverine was in the majority if the 90s run. He will get his episode eventually, but as a character on a roster you have to wait turns for who actually gets episodic time. Wolverine was always a simp for Jean and not wanting to split her and cyclops up. I feel his character has been done justice so far.

Best thing to happen not just to Marvel, but pop culture in general. and it’s good to see fans all celebrating in unison rather than divided and angry. This show is an absolute heartfelt masterpiece.
From what I remember, the concept of splitting of one episode into two separate parts is something they held onto from the original series. There were multiple episodes like that. The original series was heavily impacted by budget cuts so they needed to be super creative with how to put the shows together. Definitely interesting to hear a take from someone who isn't going into this with hella nostalgia
The biggest thing that no one's talking about! Wolverine finally got a chance at Jean and he was like no thanks! What a gentleman! He was like you and boy scout are destined to be.

Marvel deserves all the flowers it is getting for this series. The gravitas and seriousness of scenes like the gambit or Storm's glass hurricane in episode one is amazing. SO many great one liners like the Sentinels praying to robot Jesus when they said Omega level mutant detected, and they did it again for Magneto. I love that they can kill characters and then make us crushed only for Bishop or Cable to come back like the Terminator and John Conner to rewrite the timeline. They haven't focused on Wolverine yet because everyone loves him and they want to showcase how badass others like Cyclops and Storm are. MY GOD they even gave Jubilee Sonic booms like she is Guile from Street Fighter. They really killed a simple yet up to date animation and incorporated anime style action. I can not speak highly enough about the perfect blend of character development, iconic imagery and emotional attachment it has created in less than five hours of animation
As a Gambit fan, I went from 'go Gambit go', to 'nooooooooo they can't do this to my boy'. I've been feeling it for Gambit with everything that's been happening with Rogue and Magneto.

Especially after Episode 5 I was absolutely flabbergasted so far this show has been phenomenal.
Everything from the animation, storytelling, music and even the soap opera drama and twists were outstanding. Rogue and Gambit's relationship was so interesting and poetic with excellent writing, almost Shakespearean. That ending alone had my mouth on the floor. Gambit went out like an *ABSOLUTE G!!!* "Sugar... I can't feel you," nah I can't😭
All I can say is *THEY NEED TO HIRE THE WRITERS AND CREATORS TO WRITE FOR THE LIVE ACTION X-MEN IN THE MCU!!!*

It’s crazy how these episodes are 30 minutes with so much content and it never feels rushed or stuffy 🔥🔥
I have no problems with how they are doing Wolverine. But i feel the reason is because of how focus hes been used in the movies and even the upcoming deadpool movie where he is a co-star i respect them giving him these movements but having him be in the back burner to give us a break from the characters.
I agree but I think his time is coming closer to the end of the season.
Wolverine's arc in the comics and in the original series heavily includes his feelings for Jean and vice versa. The original series was praised for how true it was to the comics. If you watched ALL episodes in the original series (instead of 2 episodes and the recap) you'd understand how important it is to be included in X-Men 97. Sorry you don't have that nostalgic value. 😢

Honestly during the original run I hated wolverine when Jean I liked whenever another love interest would pop up for him silver Fox the girl with the claws, honestly the future episode with the storm made me ship him with her so much. But that might of me even me trying to like hook up everybody in the main cast
nah, in the comics his feelings for Jean are just a small part of who he is. Besides he had a lot of love interests and partners in the comics. The Logan/Scott/Jean triangle has been definitely overplayed in the media outside comics
I was reading the character since first appearance in the 80s & Mojo depiction in E4 was spot on -- totally captured the ethos of Mojoworld WOW I was impressed! Also, the split episodic time division in E4 is uniquely reflective of the source medium, as this technique of "back up story" is standard fare for comic books in ink on paper. . .a sublime tip of the cap to the original lettered & penciled format for these stories, and another "WOW" delivery for me, never-mind that "Lifedeath" is surely one of the best two issues stories ever told in comics, via the original Uncanny issues 186 & 198!!!
This show is like a Cliff's Notes version of the Uncanny X-men's Greatest Hits Vol. II (Post Dark Phoenix Saga :)
The fact that we are only halfway done and we are still getting big teases and twists coming with LifeDeath part 2 and a possible crossover with Captain America, goes to show how X-Men 97 is possible the best show of 2024 so far

I just found ur channel cuz of this video and encourage u to continue to do more X-men 97 content on here u have good insight (even though u talk really fast…lol). I also like that u don’t have deep X-men knowledge and are reviewing as someone somewhat newer to the characters- that makes ur take a little more interesting to me.
Best part of the show is the excellent and strong writing- that more than anything has impressed me most!
As for wolverine he was never the front and center focus of the X-men in the comics that happened more when the movies came out then he totally took over the team and it no longer felt like X-men. I’m glad the show is putting him in the background and letting it be the X-men again!!

The os and the movies were so top-loaded with Wolverine that I can respect them back-seating him for a little while to spotlight the others. I've no doubt they will pull focus back to him later, possibly before the end of this season, but more likely in the next. The filmmakers were compelled to put him front and center in the Fox era because of his insane popularity back in the late 80's to early 90's. Since then - while he is still a fan-favorite - many comic readers have gotten a little weary of his overexposure.
I went into the show not realizing what the rating was, but even if I knew it uses the TV14 rating more effectively than What if. I don't remember that show ever going as far with the violence, blood, and suggestive content as X-Men 97 is. Maybe due to the more realistic art style of What If they couldn't get away with as much. I was just assuming that Disney was going to keep the show's tone in line with the 90s cartoon so I didn't even realize it had a TV 14 rating until episode 3.
Not complaining, it makes it feel like the show has grown up with me. While it obviously can't adapt some of the designs of the original comics (yeah OG Goblin Queen would never happen) I was impressed they went as far as they did.
And episode 5, oh man. Even if time travel crap undoes this whole mess, wow that was amazing.
This is such a great series and episode 5 was some of the best animated storytelling I've seen in a 30 minute cartoon. They did so much in one episode and it all worked. I was sitting speechless as the credits rolled

I’m actually really glad a lot of the focus has come off of wolverine. A big issue with X-Men media has been it was too wolverine focused, so I’m glad they’re relegating him more of a secondary character this time around.

This series is terrific. I love that the creators were clearly inspired by storylines from the actual comics. It's nice to see the characters (especially rogue) represented correctly. Those FOX movies absolutely butchered her character, and we're just awful.
The reason I don't think Gambit is coming back with time travel is because of two other things; a) There's other episodes between 5 and the fallout. A Time travel story would undo those and I don't think they're going to want to retell stories they just told, whereas if they rewrite things they'll leave too many questions if they're not also addressed. So putting Lifedeath Pt. 2 in there means, I think, Remember It is staying as what actually happens. and b) The episode doesn't give us a body for Magnus whereas it does for Gambit. I think Magneto is very alive - no body, and maybe even orchestrated it all - and will be the end boss for the series, forcing Charles to come back. But that means that if they're going to soft retcon one death using non time travel means, I can't see them trying to undo it all with time travel.
I think Gambit is Dead Dead and the only chance we'll get to see him again is as a Horseman in Series 2. Which I don't want as Horseman Gambit sucked. Or Krakoa which I don't want even more. The less Krakoa they can infect '97 with, the better.
I'd much prefer he stay dead to teach us that in *this* universe, dead means dead, and we have to take things seriously, even if it means I lose three of my favourites off the bat (Gambit, Marrow and Banshee).
I jumped off the MCU train after Thor 4. The quality of the brand was dipping. This show made me hop back on. That's an achievement, and hopefully a sign of better shows, and movies to come.

I have one issue so far through 5 episodes. When Cable shows up in episode 5 that's what Madeline calls him, not Nathan. She up to that point only knew him as a baby and would have no reason to call him Cable.
But she has Jeans memories of him as Cable from the OG series, it does make some sense
Thr split episode of motendo/life death was a fantastic call back to old cartoons who did that sort of thing all the time.
It was a love letter to the old style of cartoons that we all watched growing up.
If you've watched the original series, you actually might appreciate the structure of Episode 4 a bit more. Mojo was a villain in that series and the more episodic, goofy nature of the episode is super prominent in the original series. They often split these larger comic arcs into multiple episodes to allow for the other characters to have breathing room. It felt like a callback before the series goes into Episode 5, forging its own path and narrative. But totally agreed it is the weaker of the 5 episodes on display. Series is a 10/10 for me!

I grew up with the 90s X-men cartoon, but never got see all of it; I would watch whatever episode was on. X-men 97 has blown me away in terms of character interactions and made me watch the 90s cartoon which is really good till this date.
X men 97 is perfect continues the original series perfectly for some watch the show as a kid it is brilliant when i put on the first episode and herd the intro i was transported right back to my childhood it is amazing 😊 plus i get to see gambit in action one last time 😮
Writing this comment only a few minutes in, but I'm really glad other people can finally appreciate the X-Men as much as I did as a kid watching the original animated series. But you still have to acknowledge that it's a continuation of a series. It's even part of the title. There are tons of things referenced from the original series and the comics that will fly over your head if you're only watching this version. I've already heard some critiques of things I was so fond of in my childhood so I guess this is my way of asking people to be fair when discussing those elements they may not like so much

Love the analysis, I think it's mostly spot on. One thing I'd say is the reason the Watcher was there, I believe, is just as a subtle hint to any super-fans that ish is about to go down -- it's like a clue about the impending insanity to come.

They have to set up Cyclops to be a major paragon for his fall from grace to work. Genosha is the first Domino to getting Cyclops to main villain in AvX in the comics bc he's forever changed by the genocide. Im guessing we get Emma Frost on the team soon just like after Genosha in the comics, and that turns into his affair with her which was teased slightly in Episode 5.
As a X-Men fan I have a 100 things to say, but I will only say this:

Fun fact: the animation is actually all 2-D its just looks 3d in some scenes because 2d isn't just drawing old fashioned anymore but thru software. So this smooth animation makes it looks like it's 3d but it's 100% 2d animation

They kept most things from the original, including the fast paced stories. saving the multi part episodes for things like Apocalypse and Phoenix/Dark Phoenix

I think most people just dont realize how many excellent story archs there are in comics. Its a literal blueprint to make movies. Unfortunately the way Hollywood works they would make another xmen movie starring jubilee, leech, dazzler, and Bishop. Theres a fan made gambit short movie floating around on CZcams that was better than the xmen movies we got.

The Watcher is traditionally only ever seen in the comics when a massively important event is about to occur. Usually something really bad or damaging, like the Civil War or, classically, the coming of Galactus.

If you want, I recommend you watch the old 90's cartoon for context purposes. It started off as a kids show, but it's very much like the current '97 cartoon. The show aired in 5 seasons, and was considered the best kids cartoon. Again, please watch X-Men the animated series.

I’m guessing there’s gonna be a timeskip and there gonna do a combo of age of apocalypse and days of future past cuz in age of apocalypse rogue and magnito have a kid and are married I’m guessing there’s gonna be the ones that send cable back and I’m guessing we’re gonna see there happy life but if cable succeeds then there timeline will be erased magnito having to choose between the extinction of his entire race or his family and also wolverine and jean are together in the age of apocalypse so we’d get to see what a Jean and Logan relationship would look like I’m guessing they’d have to make a similar choice making im guessing and older Scott Jean and Logan would held cable build the time travel device and Jean would die causing Logan to think that resting the timeline is the only way to bring Jean back

I am old enough that I watched the original, and i agree ep 4 was the only weak spot. Episode 5 absolutely broke me. Gripping and honestly, I've been waiting for real growth with Gambit . Remember It del8vered on all levels.
