    LOVELY work Peter! Dare I say; 'You're a 'Crafty' man?! LOL! There's SUCH a 'warmth' that resounds from an item hand-made...I picture homes at Christmas, where each made their gifts 4 one another...TRUE Gifts! Perhaps your 'time period' has given you a bit of angst (can't sit still - your words) making you feel U R always 'late' for things. LOL! The reverse strap idea is a good one, it reminds me of a Sean Connery film I once viewed and his character insisted on wearing socks inside out. He stated when asked (paraphrased) 'What is the point of wearing the agitating seams against your foot? Keep them out.' With all we witness of your fine talents, methinks U R the 'stuff of Legends'. And here's the proof; "If your actions inspire others to dream more, Learn more, Do more, and become more. You are a leader." (John Quincy Adams). Thanks Catherine 4 your fine hand and wonderful heart. Health and God Bless! :)

    • @TheWoodlandEscape
      @TheWoodlandEscape  Před rokem +1

      There is nothing finer in my opinion then receiving a hand made gift and quite frankly the quality of the item is immaterial. Now on to socks. A good friend of mine purposely miss matches all his socks. His rationale is that he never has to worry about the single ones that come out of the washer. Having said that, I do believe he wears them right side out, lol. I will most definitely pass on your encouraging words the Cathy.

    Saddle stich. Get one length of thread that is extra long for the job. Tie a couple of knots in one place in the middle of it's length. Put the needles on both ends of the single thread. The needles go back and forth through the same hole in the leather. Saddle stitch. If you learn this you won't need much else. 8-) This all works a lot easier if you hold your leather in a leather horse.

    Have you tried using 3F? It's the only granulation I use these days for every caliber, even for priming.. Ignites easier and also uses less powder for the same punch as 2F.

    • @TheWoodlandEscape
      @TheWoodlandEscape  Před rokem +4

      I agree, bigger bag equates to bigger load. I’ve used it all including my home made but, the reason I prefer 2f is, I find the larger granular are much less prone to humidity. I don’t get flashes in the pan with 2f. Your probably right about speed of ignition but, I think it is really minimal. A finely tuned lock is more important. I appreciate your interest in our channel and never tire of talking history and guns …keep your powder dry.

    After watching a bunch of your videos, I see that many people (myself included) have asked about the trade silver pins. Perhaps we could hear more about them. I'd also love to see an up close discussion on your other edc wares, such as your neck knives and the tomahawk you made in conjunction with other makers. Thanks again for what you (both) do.

    I'm curious about the gourd canteen you have hanging on the wall in the background. Grew a bunch of these gourds this summer, but can't figure out how I should attach the spout securely. Seems as if just gluing it on is a recipe for having it break off; is there a better way to attach it?

    Love your possible bags! I have made cartridge and cap boxes for US Civil War impressions, as well as bayonet scabbards. So I appreciate the work you are doing! Have you made a "belly box"? Curved block of wood with 18 or 20, holes deep enough to hold paper cartridges with / without the ball. There are straps on the front that the waist belt goes around and holds against hip or belly. Just a block of wood shaped like a kidney with a leather flap over it.

    Much smaller shooting bag than typically carried by Western fur trappers down here in the U states in the early 19th Century. About the same size of the leather belt bags that I make to sell at rendezvous. Good hunting.

    I have a bag my Father made that I think is a reproduction of a Continental soldier’s “ necessary bag”. It is much larger as I think the carried many pre rolled cartridges. I am not certain if I should just use this bigger bag for hunting or make a smallish one for day hunts?

If you are interested I can bring you one! You can do a video! I have a question about bear fat, could one substitute bear with racoon fat? I got 7 of them this year,but no bear! I was going to try pig fat as well for the musket! I have alot of pig fat! Great video!

      @TheWoodlandEscape  Před rokem

      I think any rendered fat will work. I suspect coon fat would be excellent. I’ve found over the years that avoiding and petroleum products works best. Lubing patches or cushion wads is great using fat and rust of metal parts is kept in check. Never done a pig skin before. Can I get back to you on your offer. I have 7 deer hides in the freezer that are grained and membraned and I’ll no doubt have a few fresh ones in the next couple of weeks. Still waiting for that visit, perhaps after hunting season.

    Sometimes I see "fringe" on shooting bags. Is there any historical significance shooting bags with fringe on them? Thanks!

    • @TheWoodlandEscape
      @TheWoodlandEscape  Před rokem +1

      There is little or no documentation for fringed anything until one gets into the mountain man era of the early 1800. In the 1700,s it would have been pretty rare. As to practicality, I really don’t know why so, my quests it was just the fashion of the day.

    • @TheWoodlandEscape
      @TheWoodlandEscape  Před rokem +1

      You raise an excellent point. Historically they did just that. The exception would have been being called up for Militia duty and if one was a long hunter. Long hunters were hired by the fur trapping companies and their primary job was to keep meat in the stew pots. Often they wer3 gone for 3 to 5 months and would be required to run balls in the field. I do it primarily to simply experience what they had to do.

      Trade silver, a very common item in the 1700’s. Could literally be used as currency at a trading post for goods. In a time period on the frontier when hard currency was a rarity.
