    Yes, this is a controversial topic but if you're new around here then I guess the first thing I should tell you is that I grow about 75% of my collection in no drainage and this is just my preference! Part 2 of this video will include most of the FAQ's I get about growing in no drainage, pro's and cons, different no drainage potting mixtures, etc.. so keep an eye for that one to come out in a few weeks!
    Please keep in mind this is just MY preference of growing plants, this is no way trying to be an educational video about the "right" way to grow, as I always say, just do what works for you. All rude comments will be deleted. 🥳

      It’s so funny because I feel like people are at polar opposite ends of the spectrum 😆 I get a decent amount of these comments saying they love the longer videos, and then others who say they wish I made shorter ones. I actually struggle with making short videos though- 1 hour seems to be my normal and that’s considered “short” for me 😆

    The way you speak, both in timbre of your voice and the precise way you enunciate words, especially the scientific names is so pleasant to listen to. .Your Ideas and choice of flora are quite advanced a selection but but because you are not only aesthetically a delight to listen to, but also crisply intelligent. Your personal (some may say radical) style of caring for your wards appears to be an unpopular and often criticized trait is something that I both personally respect as well as see as an absolute strength of yours which is unique and nothing to be apologetic about since it is quite evidently working for you. Its something that newbies like myself find very inspiring because it keeps caring for and having plants exciting and dynamic. It is not work that needs to be done ~ but keeps things exciting because plants keeps surprising us , even those common ones that everyone supposedly knows everything about. I also love how candid you are about mishaps and other perceived errors and bloopers which when juxtaposed on such joyfully natural and enthusiastic inquiry and mental clarity , hence, manifesting as verity of confidence , makes for a fun, educational, and inspiring offering from you which is such a gift to myself as I imagine countless others! Keep on being as you are, It really works MORE than just adequately for you. 🙏🏻💡❤️😇.

      It’s funny how we repot thinking “oh you’re gonna be so happy” and then they throw a tantrum 😂 I grew some ferns with no drainage but once they outgrew those vessels I moved them to pots with drainage and they literally all croaked. I find alocasias to be much less finickier than ferns, but I’ve had some die back to a rhizome and go completely dormant during the winter. My Alocasia micholitziana Maxkowskii is one of those that *always* dies back during the winter ☹️

I don't understand people that bring all of their plants to sinks and let the substrate wash down their drains. I just bring a water bucket to them. Honestly I'm really good at gauging how much water each plant needs so I don't even ever take them out of the cache pot. I never thought about just doing away with the inner pot part.

    Hey I just saw your fishbone cactus. I have one too!
    I think you might be under watering your fishbone based on the color and texture of the leaves. It looks like it's really on the dry side. Fishbone don't mind drying out but I actually am able to keep mine moist pretty constantly.
    Before I started getting a little heavier on the water it looked a lot like yours, but when I kicked it up I got super glossy leaves, and it CONSTANTLY puts out new fronds. I think mine started out like 6" tall in a 6" pot, but it's around five times the size now.
    Start off slowly, but try to water it more to see how it does.

I've been experimenting with pon and it's really great for rooting stuff, but I'm still apprehensive about actually growing stuff in it. I had a terrible winter this year, like half of my collection got root rot and I've been rehabbing everything mostly in hydro. Alice is 👩‍⚖️ officially ✍🏼 Allen
      Also I find that I tend to gravitate more toward adding (coarse only) perlite to Pon as it REALLY improves aeration. I really don’t like how dense and fine lechuzapon brand makes their substrate. I much prefer a homemade pon since the individual substrates are usually a much coarser grade. But adding leca is also great too, as the round shape of it mixed in with pon also allows for more air pockets. 💖

    When growing in no drainage is it a must to have them in clear canisters? Or is any no drainage pot okay?

    • @SuperUsername147
      @SuperUsername147 Před rokem +4

      You could use a no drainage pot that you can’t see through, but I wouldn’t recommend it, especially if you’re new to growing with no drainage. I like using clear vessels (usually I repurpose jars and food containers that would typically be thrown out) and putting them inside decorative planters. Clear is useful because it allows you to see what’s going on in the soil and if too much water is pooling at the bottom. You can also typically see when the substrate is dry by the color. Easier to monitor everything. The decorative planter blocks algae growth and looks really nice.
