2011 Polaris Sportsman Transmission Noise & Fix

- 2011 Polaris Sportsman 500 with almost 3000 miles started making a horrible noise and had trouble moving. The noise sounded like it was coming from the transmission. The main drive chain in the transmission was stretched beyond the point where the tensioner could keep it tight so it would skip over the gear teeth when trying to accelerate. A new chain would cost $239, plus the trans probably needed all new bearings and seals. I found a used transmission from a 2013 Sportsman 800 on eBay for $197 with free shipping. Once I received it I checked the chain, it was good, so I installed new seals and also sealed the case back up before installing it. The install was not hard, the worst part it getting the axles out as they were rusted to the splines. Everything was cleaned and greased during reassembly. It is once again ready to pull underpowered Hondas out of mud pits.

Just had to do same thing but it was just a stretched reverse chain
Quick question I know this video is old but I have a 2013 570 and it goes forward in Neutral and jumps in first gear when taking off and won’t go in reverse sometimes it goes forward any thoughts
Maybe a messed up shift linkage, but it sounds more like transmission issues. The idle speed needs to be set correctly, too high and it'll make it hard to shift
Why didn’t you just replace the chain. Also, how long did it take to remove the transmission and was it a bear of a job. Got a 2013 400 HO and tranny was slipping today with no prior warning. Any thoughts why.
The chain cost more than a good used trans, details are in the video description. Time to complete the job depends, mine took about 6 hours.
Many thanks. I think my belt got water inside the case causing it to slip.
Awesome job! Is it a common thing for them to go on those models?
Thanks! I do not think this is common. My Polaris has big 26 inch ITP Terracross tires on it and no clutch kit, the original owner put 2600 miles on it and rode it hard, which probably lead to the chain stretching.
Why not buy another chain and tensioner I only ask because mine is doing the same thing I have 28s and 12’ wheels and the previous owner road it hard. I’m just wondering did it wear the teeth off the gears or something?
The used trans was cheaper
My 2016 scrambler is making the same noise. 100 hours only and not very heavy use. There is no tensioner on my though. Any thoughts. Oil change didn't turn up much. Should I change sprockets and chain to be safe?
The parts are expensive, you're probably better off getting a used transmission
Job well done sir. Did you by chance see how much a new transmission would cost?
A new chain was about $200, so I'm sure the entire transmission would be much more, but I didn't price it out.
@@SeaDooEric Man, that is expensive! Anyway thank you for the reply and the info.
@@williamsantiago7303 You can but a good condition used tranny for about 350 dollars.
@@tylerrusty1122 Hey buddy thanks for the response and the info. 👍
Mine is doin that on a 2005 Polaris scrambler 500.... jus in reverse.... but goes perfectly fine in drive... do i change whole transmission??
Probably
@@SeaDooEric hello.
Thanks for your very helpful video !
I have the same problem, i find an other good transmission, i open it to check the chain, it was very good.
But once rebuild the problem is still here....
Did you know what i do wrong or something else broken?
Thanks a lot
Thanks for watching, if that didn't fix your problem I don't know what else it could be
I see why it’s stretched !
Did it go faster with the 800 transmission just wondering
No
Why would it be faster?
@@bradenbaldwin9838 because the transmission is made for a 800 sportsman
It was actually faster because the transmission chain was not skipping over gear teeth like the original. It was probably no faster than it was originally though. I'm not sure if the gear ratios are different, in the 800 transmission, it seemed fine though.
@@SeaDooEric what’s the top speed on it
Would of been way cheaper to just replace that chain and guide man lol
read the video description
@@SeaDooEric where are you looking that the chain cost 230$ ???
This video was done years ago and that was the cost then
Excellent work. I'd rather just buy a Honda and skip all that stuff.
Thanks! Stuff breaks when you have some power, Honda owners don't have that problem
@@SeaDooEric its all in the transmission I think they all got power but you got a belt that for sure gets hot . I’ve a 450 fourman it won’t pull from a dead stop but my old 88 Suzuki 250 with differential lock super low would pull a house if you had weight on it !
