I take you through protecting your lettuce crop from animals and pests. I'll show you the way I harvest my lettuce to keep it growing and maximize the harvests. This is my favorite way to grow lettuce and harvest it so it keeps growing. How do you grow your lettuce?
Any small to super small seed We learned from a country Gal to mix some sand with the seeds in a container (like an old butter tub). Since our first try we found grits will also work in a pinch. Then when you broad cast them the light sand shows up well and you can see how your doing. It's just a thought to share.
Your lettuce looks so healthy! Another great video Valerie!
Thanks, Andrea. Have a great weekend

Thank you for you kind words of encouragement 😊
Nice Forsythia:)))
Our climate is great for lettuces almost yeae round :) It's definitely more challenging in other areas.
Your lettuce looks awesome and great demonstration of the different sowing techniques:))))
Perfect way to save money on seeds !!
Cheers J&C 🌱👍😊
Hi J&C! Lucky you to be able to grow it year round as we get too hot from June-August. I still think it’s crazy we’re in the same zone but have such different climates. Thanks for watching and hope your garden is doing great!
Very useful and informative for those who love growing lettuce.

Thanks, Heidi. I hope you’re doing well 💚
Great tips dear!! I have a little bit of lettuce growing! I don't have enough space to grow in abundance, lettuce is one of my favorites! Have a blessed weekend 😊❤❤❤
Hi Juani. I’m able to dedicate one small bed to it in late winter/early spring because it’ll finish before I need to plant out my tomatoes. That and spinach are always my first harvests for the year 💚
Your garden looks absolutely amazing!
@@juanisgarden5356 You're so sweet. Thank you!
Your lettuce look different from what we have in South Africa, where they form a proper tucked in head.
I'd almost forgotten about that lettuce, although it's what I grew up on in the US. I never enjoyed salads until I moved to Europe where we have several different varieties of heads. When sown using broadcasting, you get the most tender leaf lettuce that truly makes eating salads a treat.
I had trouble with some type of pests eating away at my lettuce. Got some wire cloches and all is well. However, my lettuces are never crisp. I refrigerate but no crisp lettuce. I harvest, rinse put into a paper towel and then into a ziplock bag. What am I doing wrong? Help!!
Hi CJ, I'm glad you found a solution to your pest problem. As for having crisp lettuce, first I would say that some lettuce varieties are more crisp than others. Aside from the variety, for the crispest lettuce I recommend you harvest only what you need each day and harvest early in the day when the weather is still cool. But sometimes we decide we want a salad for dinner and haven't harvested anything, right? So here's what I do. Once I harvest and soak/wash it, I use a salad spinner to get the excess water off. If I'm going to refrigerate it, I leave it out on a towel to air dry before putting it in the ziploc. This way it stays crisp and fresh for several days in the ziploc. Hope this helps!
Do you thin the plants at all?
You could but I don’t. I either harvest at cut-and-come-again (scissors cutting about 1cm above the soil) and they grow back again for the next harvest. Or, I harvest the individual leaves if the crop is still young. Hope this helps
You could, but I don’t. I either harvest as cut and come again (I use scissors and cut straight across the bed about 1 cm above the soil & the lettuce will grow back for another harvest). Or, I harvest the individual leaves when the crop is still young or when I don’t sow the seeds as thickly.
