I run the round ones to knock fish out out cold while trolling. Little suckered punch here and there never hurt lol. I run round ones coming from smaller lakes where some times the bottom will change depths quick and drag will be okay. Now I switched to all electric with bottom tracking which is great. Will switch to others when extra cash comes in.

I run round downrigger balls because it’s what I have. They were given to me so that’s what I went with once I looked at the cost of replacements.

Clip question, will a Chamberlain handle a hard pulling musky lure ? I fish for Musky and Lake Trout. No salmon in our area.

Yes it will. You can adjust the release tension. I have trolled bucktails and even Poseidon's down 20 feet on the rigger. I said to much I got to go now! LOL

Down riggers are also used in striper fishing with live bait at low speeds compared to salmon trolling. Round cannon balls pluses: 1) comparatively less costly, and 2) at low speed....less than 1.5 mph the spherical shape isn't a significant liability, and 3) at shallow depth....the same as low speed. Some of us older fisherman with non-raising downriggers see overwhelming value in not having to reach over the side to access Chamberlains or Blacks....though those are fine releases. Thanks
