  • Caeleb Dressel established himself in the post-Phelps era with his first individual Olympic gold medal to go with three relay golds and 13 World Championships. The American took the marquee event of the 100m freestyle, edging defending champion Kyle Chalmers. Robert Finke, also of the United States, took the first men’s 800m freestyle, Zac Stubbelty-Cook won the 200m breaststroke, and Zhang Yufei won two golds, the first in the women's 200m butterfly and the second in the 4x200m freestyle relay, in an incredible race in which China, the USA and Australia all went under the previous world record. In canoe slalom, Australian Jessica Fox finally secured her long-awaited gold medal after a silver in London, a bronze in Rio and another bronze earlier in Tokyo, in the first ever women’s C1, an event she had to fight to get onto the canoe slalom program. Croatia’s Sinkovic brothers, Martin and Valent, won gold in the coxless pair, having won the double sculls in Rio. And they have already announced another switch. And with Simone Biles cheering in the stands, Sunisa Lee stepped up to ensure the US took another gold in the women’s individual all-around final of artistic gymnastics.
