Why ‘Wicked’ Called in a Software Developer to Star in Show

- When COVID-19 hampered a Broadway musical, they turned to a software engineer to fill the lead role. Having been given only 24 hours' notice, Carla Stickler was on a plane from northern Michigan on one of the worst travel days of the year to New York City to star on Broadway as Elphaba in “Wicked.” Stickler is no stranger to Broadway or the musical “Wicked,” She starred as the green witch in 2015, which happens to be the last time she ever performed the role before switching careers.
"I'm a software engineer, I just perform as Elphaba on Broadway as a hobby."
what a show offfffff lol
what a MAJOR flex 😆 i love it tho
@@applenice1069 not unless what you're showing off is super cool.
Carla is spectacular!!!!! I've seen her in the show back in her initial Ensemble track (while she was the understudy). Gotta applaud all of WICKED's standbys, understudies, and swings. Plus shout out to the team who was so WONDERFUL enough to reach out to past cast members to come back & keep the show running. 7 years later, Carla still has it as "Elphaba".
I study with another former "Elphaba" privately Desi Oakley and she had a familiar experience. Before COVID hit, Desi got the call to go play "Jenna" overseas in the London production of WAITRESS. She previously played the role on the 1st National Tour. She was filling in for Lucie Jones (who ironically is about to play "Elphaba" in the London company of WICKED) who was sick. Both understudies also were out (one was sick and the other one was on vacation) and got to do the role for 2 WEEKS. Found out in Buffalo, NY while teaching a master class and in just 24 hours, she made her West End debut as "Jenna" in WAITRESS
We love our green girls
A woman who can work jobs that require both her left AND right brain all within short notice!! That's what I call a strong flexible female lead....
As a computer engineering student who loves theatre, this is the dream
She’s very smart, glad she got the job :)
In a liberal world. 🙄
@@lionheart4529 how tf is she not smart? she’s freaking incredible. y’all pull the liberal card on just about anything 💀
stupid account buyer
She played the role as standby on broadway in 2015.
Glad she got BOTH jobs
I remember working in the same office as her, she was such a delight
I remember this one time me and Elvis were fighting sand worms on the moon. It was so delightful
@@austinbevis4266 Austin don’t play with me, yo ass always making jokes like I wasn’t at your aunts wedding 🙄 😂

This is such an incredible story. Absolutely inspiring for a community theatre actress like myself!
The first time I saw Wicked was in 2012, now I don’t remember what her role was but she must’ve been amazing, and all these years later it sounds like she hasn’t forgotten how to do it
She's a multi talented woman. Acting and tech. WOW
I’ve seen her as Elphaba in Portland back in 2012 on my 16th birthday, she was amazing
Every time she tries to get out, they drag her back in!
so what
Saw her perform live and she’s super talented, and super cute to boot.
What an inspiration! I aspire to be like her one day, a software coder AND a broadway performer ACK
She sounded great!!
What a smart and talented lady
When the actual news used the bootleg video
That's what I was thinking...
Glad I’m not the only actor and software developer out there 😅
This is amazing! She is so talented! What an amazing story ❤️❤️
Wow i love her voice when they showed us a part of her singing just beautiful 🙏🙏
Incredible talent & brains and loving her dreams! 👍🏽👍🏽♥️
WOW!!!!! she's one TALENTED ONE OF A KIND WOMAN! WOOOO!!!!!!
saw this show 3 years ago, amazing!!!
You go girl! The show must go on.
Bro if I had to do that I would of just stutter and sweat 💀
So she used to be in the show from 2010 to 2015 before changing career?. Inside edition making it sound like a random IT person , with no theatre experience, randomly got a call to star in a hit broadway musical. She probably left because she didn’t get the lead role, now they’re desperate for actor, they called her. Man I still get calls from old jobs about managerial roles I applied for but didn’t get. All in all, congrats to her.
She wasn’t only in the show but played Elphaba before. That’s why they called her. She left show business because it’s hard and she got burned out.
@@Rachster86 and Inside Edition making it sound and look like she just landed a job that she didn’t dream of having in her life time, a job completely different from what she had done before.
She left because she got burnt out ? Hope she will not be burn out this time, with an even more stressful role.
I had my doubts about the title too but suspected that she left acting to pursue a new career and I was right. Click bait at its finest.
Incredible!!!!! You go, girl!!!!!
I dream of a day when a women being successful at two things isn’t so unexpected that it makes the news.
Okay but to be honest if it was a man it is still news-worthy. Starring on Broadway and being a software engineer is really an unusual and amazing feat, regardless of who is able to pull this off.
Wow she is amazing!!!
You go girl!!!
That’s so awesome 😎
I literally saw the show a week before this 😂. It was amazing!
This is what my mom (and many other parents) mean when they tell their kids to have a back up plan instead of relying solely on going into the field of their hobby. Go for a job that pays well and is something that you can do so that you can spend time on your hobby without having to worry about basic living expenses
Omg she's amazing!!!! My dream is to play elphaba on broadway when I grow up!! (My profile picture is me dressing up as her lol) I love Wicked. I do singing videos on my channel.
Elphaba is my dream too
DUDE you actually have a really nice voice! You might want to do full covers using a backtrack. Might get more views :) Best of luck!
@@alenanela1743 thank you!!! I'm just posting for fun and I don't really care how many views I get but that's really good advice!
Bellissimo, bravissima!
Was Adele Dazeem not available?
The headline makes it seem like they just called a random software developer at random.
I mean… It is true that they called someone who wasn’t a professional actress at that moment 🤷🏻♂️
She’s gorgeous, smart, talented! Icon
She sounds amazing
Girl can sing.😍
That is awesome
I saw Wicked after *7* years since it didn’t come back due to NC laws. I was so happy it came back and it felt like a fever dream it was that good. One of my favorite musicals
Okay, I'll bite...NC laws? I'm new to the state!
@@mollycblaeser there were Anti LGBT laws, and wicked is supportive of the LGBTQ, so due to that law staying for that long, they didn’t come back until that law was removed.
Congrats!
Awrsome 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Good for her
Yes, I also have a dream to perform on Broadway. I always wanted to be Christine from the phantom of the opera however with my voice, my career can only end up here in my bathroom
Neat story, but incredibly misleading. In her 5 years working as the Elphaba understudy, she mastered multiple ensemble parts which is why when she left the show full-time the production team kept her on the payroll to be emergency backup for the ensemble cast (because chorus girls have sick and emergency days too) as well as keeping her as an emergency Elphaba if ever needed. She's been back in Wicked MANY times since 2015 and in many different productions, but up till now has only covered ensemble roles. The only thing that makes this moment arguably extraordinary is that it's her first time playing the lead again since 2015.
Wow! She’s spectacular! I’m jealous! Wait a minute! I may have been in a Broadway musical yet, & not competing on The Voice yet. However, I’m a nurse & I’m an up & coming You Tuber with 154 subscribers so far. I’m a singer & do make-up have on my channel. Thanks to you, Inside Edition, the show played my video of me singing God Bless America last year on the week of The Insurrection. I sang Elphaba from Wicked covers on my channel. So yeah! No jealousy anymore! I’m so good! 👍🤗
Good for her. Hope they paid her well!
I PERFORM ON BROADWAY AS A HOBBY! ALSO GIVE IT UP FOR THE UNDERSTUDIES AND SWINGS DURING THIS TIME!
That would of been a dream come true
Nice :)
🧠 and a voice. 💕
I don't know I was expecting her to have hologramed herself into the theater or something by the way the title was written lol
❤💙💜
Beautiful 😍
That must have been insane!!!
Wow that’s crazy?! Show biz called her back home 🥰
I'm a grown ass adult but I wish I were that smart and talented.
This is like seeing Kanye take a break from running his food truck to work on a new album
Funnily enough Kanye said he has seen this show several times
Eight-year-old me is still waiting for the call telling me I need to fill in for the role of Annie
i named my violin elphaba lol
the say "software engineer" with such distain
I love how they say “strictly no filming” yet the TV channel used footage taken “illegally” by an audience member 😂
What a funny story!
Passion
Cool
She must be a wicked software engineer.
🤗🤗🤗🤗
I love her singing
yeah that’s cool and all but can she center a div?
Hi!
So...they're trying to give her covid too or...
This is amazing, but should we really be having showings of this during a pandemic where the performers all have COVID smh.
because most people in the arts have multiple jobs.
This is an odd news story. People can work in two industries at the same time. Especially if one is performing arts.
When news shows part of a bootleg😂😂
How many shows did she perform in? Is she going to perform in more? Did any other Broadway show hire her?
She did two shows. Evening and matinee.
@@sohoboy506 She only did the evening show on January 1st

Hello
Hummm... that's suspicious, maybe she has been secretly dreaming to return back to Broadway and the Universe listened😄 Good for het But I swear I though she was that woman in a subway alley to whom a guy askedto sing with him and went viral.
Within a minute ticket here I got 34 seconds

Not special. She was basically already a performer but on hiatus and became a SE in the meantime. It would have been a unique story if she was brand new to performing at all
It’s a fun human interest story… I think you’re over analyzing it a bit.
Can you perform in a Broadway musical that you haven’t done in six years with 24 hours notice during one of the most difficult traveling times during the year?
Not surprised she played the role because that's the nature of them..
This is what women get wrong. Men don't think I hope to inspired young boys, Men want to inspire everyone.Women should do the same.
She wore a greenface. It's an outrage. 🤢
She couldn't make it as an actress so did something else with he life. Desperate, they called her... a former actress.....
Wicked lovers if you die today will you go to heaven? Have you ever lied, stolen, hated, used God's name as a curse word (O-M-G)?
