This. The dutch media and most people here had mostly written off this team as being in transition and that we would be lucky to get through the round of 16. Instead we went all the way to the semi's to become third. Even humiliating brazil again for the third place with 3-0.

He made the only right decision that season, joining a title-hungry United and was promised by Sir Alex to lead the line. When I was a kid there were three Dutch teens everyone was raving about. Van Der Vaart, Robben and Van Persie. They all played for different teams in the Dutch big three at the time. Van Der Vaart was by far the most hyped! People were tipping him to become the best player in the world. Robben was number two and Van Persie was way behind them. But you could make a solid augment that Van Persie became the best player of the three. Him and Robben took a little bit of time to reach world class status and Van Der Vaart peaked quite early and never pushed on to reach his potential.

Van Persie is my personal favourite footballer ever. Together with Zidane. Any parallels to be found in regards to technique? ;)

Sir Alex had strong belief and brought Rvp to Man Utd on summer 2012. Actually, Man utd planned to buy Lewandowski but when Sir Alex know that Rvp want to leave Arsenal, he didnt think twice.
You may think that Lewan would be better signing but at that time, Sir Alex needed a proved striker in PL to get the PL champions right away so he could retire (in fact he wanted to retire in the end of 2011-2012 season but the title's loss to Man City due to goals differences hurt him).
Manutd even could get further in Champions League that year if Nani didnt get a questionable red card vs Real Madrid

If anything, if his interview where he explained why he went there is anything to go by, him going to Man U is more of an indictment on Arsenal & he was well within his rights to leave & he definitely made the right decision considering that Arsenal were less concerned with winning the league from that point onwards (Especially when Wenger came out & said top 4 is as good as a trophy)

As an Arsenal fan i cant blame him, hindsight proved him right Arsenal had no ambition RVP did and the results speak for themselves. You can call him a snake all you want but it doesn't change the fact that only 1 out of the 2 has a tital in the past 15 years. If RVP bottled it like Alexis Sanchez did then people wouldnt care anywhere near as much. RVP is just a focal point for Arsenal fans to outlet there frustrations for an era they could and should have done better, which is even more pronounced with how far Arsenal have fallen.

Keep it going, your on the right track. I’m Neither A Arsenal fan nor A Utd fan, but RVP was a quality player with a exquisite left foot. Only Rivaldo had a left foot better than him IMO. Ferguson even said after retiring that he felt sorry for RVP because he told him when he signed that he was stopping at Utd for a few more years. Shame because you seen the difference he made in just one season under Ferguson. Fantastic player.

Apparently Arsene Wenger never offered him any future contract or any hint that it would happen so he had to look for other options. He didn't say that he definitely would have stayed but at least then he would have had a choice to make. Hard to stay when you feel like your manager doesn't want you... He never played in England so there will be no video because this is how things work. Have to play in Spain or England. It's stupid. Remember how 9 months ago people were having doubts about Erling? Like do they even watch the Bundesliga? Dude was the best striker in the world after Lewa for over a year and there are still doubts (and yes I don't rate Benzema, go away).

Sitting in the dressingroom with Bergkamp and Henry totally changed his attitude, it humbled him and they showed him talent alone is not enough.
His extremely down to earth wife has had big hand in it too probably.
He told on Dutch TV that if his clothes are on the ground his wife calls him, shows him what was on the ground, drops it again on the floor and makes him clean up his own sh*it, I think that is a great big tell, he was laughing and proud when he told the story, he is not a star at home

Imagine man Utd were to have van persie in the mid 2020/21 season, rotating him and cavani. Lot of draw match would have been a win and gap btw city would have been much lesser.
Utd really in need of a clinical striker.

He was a sensational footballer. It always hurts as a Arsenal fan that we really only got one season out of him, but you can't really begrudge him going for the title. Its also mildly amusing for us that after we stuck by him all that time through his nonense and injuries to only get one season, he moved to United and got... one season before it went to shit. Weirdly poetic.
But yeah, fantastic footballer and whilst I'd have loved for him to have spent his whole career with us, he also deserved a title and it wasn't going to happen with us at the time.

As and Arsenal fan, i really liked van Persie, the guy was quite unique in the ways he finished the attacks, creating several amazing goals. With so many bad players coming to Arsenal, and the ship going down, I can understand him moving to a team with chances of winning the EPL, I didn't like it tho, and still don't. Anyways, great player with many injuries and quite unique style
