It’s worth mentioning that the growth at Marineford doesn’t just “happen”. The closer Luffy gets to Sabaody, the more and more he starts to struggle and the closer he comes to losing it all. At Water Seven, he comes the closest he ever has at that point to death, even _with_ Gear Second now in his pocket, needing to be saved. At Thriller Bark, he only barely takes down Moria before everyone’s burned alive by the sun (it had already begun, even) and was flat-out unconscious when Kuma came along and Zoro had to fill in for him. Come Sabaody, he’s helpless to stop Kizaru and save his crew. At Impel Down, he can’t fight Magellan at all, all he can do is escape. Finally, at Marineford, even with the fucking _Whitebeards_ at his back, Ace dies with him right there.
No amount of new trick or technique can buffer him this time. He’s officially hit his stopping point, and he knows it. He wants to become Pirate King, but he finally accepts he _wasn’t ready_ and chooses to reexamine himself and study under a master to make sure he’s properly prepared and not just coasting on his training from his grandfather and sheer willpower - he now knows he has to be something more for the sake of his crew.
Come his return two years later, how he interacts with enemy factions has completely transformed, he carries himself with _command._ Luffy's no longer quick to just shouting at the top of his lungs, he asserts himself with confidence and reigns in his anger, save for during the heat of battle or conflict. He still doesn't take himself seriously, but whereas he previously only took his dream and his bonds of friendship seriously, he now takes being a pirate and leader seriously. He understands better the position he has to have to hold onto what's most important to him and achieve his goal.

Glad you pointed that out. The fight against Katakuri showed this perfectly. Katakuri was superior in every aspect, leaving Luffy no choice but to develop on the fly or die. But the way he endlessly comes at Katakuri, even disturbing his snack time wasn't a new ability, but it was an offensive attack surprising the enemy.
Luffy never thinks he can win. He knows he can win.

The thing with Luffy is, as far as character development, he's already a complete character. The only things he needs, is the development in his naivety (comes with time) and the strength to stand when others fall. honestly to me the character development comes from those around him. Like Goku he already has his core values, though those have been moving slightly lately (TOP arc and Moro arcs were definite shifts in his actions and motivations). Luffy has not had a major shift in his goals, He doesn't want to be a Hero, but always does the right thing. He doesn't want to be a conqueror, yet is dominating the new world, among the supernovas of his time. He doesn't even really want to be a King, yet to get the freedom he wishes for, he needs the title. He already has the will and determination to fight, so he just needs the strength, that is where his development is

The thing I feel people don't understand is that characters changing and maturing through out a series doesn't mean they are automatic better characters than a character that barely change. Highly recommend a video on this topic named "Character Development is Overrated" from Craftsdwarf.
For example Kamina from Gurren Lagann and Spike from Cowboy bebop didn't suffer any major character development and changes through out their animes. Are they bad characters? No, they are fantastic characters.
Naruto needed to change drastically because of the type of story the Author was trying to tell. Luffy changing to a more intelligent and cautious character like Law, doesn't fit the type of story that is One Piece.

Say someone is older and knows how the world works and has great wisdom, or you have someone who is more enlightened and might follow a religious path in life, I bet that decisions on what next to do would come natural to them, as they have core, defined values to follow at all times and have ingrained it into themselves. I understand where your coming from on the whole Naruto getting powerups argument, but I feel like everything else you mentioned, like comparing Naruto and Sasuke's relationship to Usopp and Luffy's is unfair especially without the context from the show. For instance, Naruto knew Sasuke was being manipulated into becoming who he became midway into Shippuden and wanted to save him from that and stop Sasuke from going down the road of revenge against their home and losing Sasuke forever. Whereas with Usopp and Luffy they had an argument about the Going Merry and Usopp decided to leave to form his own crew. They are two completely different stories that I feel were unfairly compared to put Naruto down. While admittedly I love Naruto seeing as how I grew up with it from a young age and I only start reading and watching One Piece 5 years ago. But I can see the flaws in both.
I love Naruto as a character because I could relate to his loneliness and despair when he was alone for the majority of his life and didn't allow himself to be swallowed up by that hatred to the world for treating him the way he did. But I also love Luffy in the the way that he doesn't let stronger opponents stop him and a lot of the crew for that matter. Sanji is my favorite crew member though.

So I'm going to go through each point that I can argue in a list format here with my argument under it.
      1. "Naruto basically abandoned everyone else in the chase for sasuke who wasn't even that important in naruto's life. Sasuke wasn't a true friend to naruto and yet naruto chase after him like a dog chasing after a stick."
Him an Naruto grew up together in the same village, went to the same school and went through the same kind of loneliness in their childhood, where Naruto hated the village for labeling him an outcast, Sasuke didn't bother to try to socialize with anyone because he wanted to kill Itachi, so he saw Sasuke as some kind of kindred spirit since they bother didn't have a family to go home to every day. They were on the same team, developed a bond, saw each other grow, Naruto almost lost Sasuke once when Sasuke took the needles meant for Naruto when they fought against Haku. He knew Sasuke was a good person, he saw Sasuke as his best friend, and he knew that because of Orochimaru he was being manipulated and didn't want Sasuke to become a criminal.
      2. "Not only that but chasing after sasuke almost got people killed and instead of backing away from the pursuit."
You seem to forget that Tsunade had Shikamaru form a team to stop Sasuke from defecting to the sound village, it wasn't just Naruto that made the decision. They all know they'd be fighting against strong opponents and while yes a lot of them did almost die, they didn't.
      3. "He even go after a more dangerous opponent to try to bring sasuke back. Think of hinata, kiba, shino, saskura, kakshi, and naruto vs itachi and Kisame. They both can kill that entire team but naruto has to chase after itachi because sasuke ran away on his own free will. Naruto keeps putting people in danger for sasuke who isn't worth the trouble."
So I'm not sure what you're referring to when you were talking about Hinata, Kiba, and the rest. But I also don't remember them having to chase after Itachi and Kisame because Sasuke left the village, if you're reffering to when Itachi and Kisame infiltrated the Leaf then that has nothing to do with Sasuke being there and they were doing Akatsuki things. But everything else you said brings me back to the point of Naruto knew Orochimaru was manipulating him and wanted to save him before he was too far gone.

@@Narutoght Ugh calling sasuke naruto's best friend cause me to throw up in my mouth. And this is the problem. It was all one sided. Naruto treated sasuke as a friend and ally the first hint that naruto was actual on sasuke level, Sasuke leaves because he doesn't think he is improving enough to beat his older brother. Yes, i know all of the reason why naruto thought he should chase after sasuke like a dog chasing after a bone but that doesn't make it right or something that i agree with. Naruto really took a dive when he ignores everyone around him for sasuke. His actual friends that are willing to die for him and die with him. Verse the dude who left and never look back.
Oh naruto decide to chase after itachi to get sasuke back. That is why hinata, kiba, and shino was on naruto's team, looking for itachi.

When people complain about Luffy's character development (or lack thereof) I think back to Totally not Mark's take on Goku: the flat character arc. A character with ideals, personality and values well established from the get go and whose journey helps in the evolution and growth of other characters while overcoming his own hardships. The development is subtle, but it's definitely there.

Luffy is already fully developed as a character. There’s no need for character development since Luffy is a character that shapes the world and its characters instead of the world shaping him. Luffy is embodied as Luffy and there’s no need for identity change, I mean who the hell wants Luffy to turn into a complete typical edgy-serious teen. As for character progression, Luffy doesn’t have that many major/drastic changes. However, he does have subtle progression and he undergoes slow change as the story goes on and as the events shape the characters. I think that hint of subtle change to the characters really gives this realistic and relatable approach of how people slowly change over time without noticing it right away.

Naruto to Sasuke: I can't become Hokage without you returning to the village
Luffy to Sanji: I can't become Pirate king without you.
Sounds the same, but means a very different thing. I love Luffy for saying that. On the Other Hand, I hate Naruto for saying that.
Naruto becoming hokage had nothing to do with Sasuke returning in the village, He only wants it because he promised Sakura, and for becoming Hokage He only needed His village's approval, Neither Sasuke's not Sakura's. moreover, Sasuke was already considering killing them without any hesitation or goal. But Naruto just had to suck for Sasuke, even though I never saw what great friendship they had with each other in the story. Him saying that was super dumb.
On the contrary, Sanji was essential to the crew for survival and firepower, And Luffy specifically knew that Sanji was hurting inside and only doing this to help the crew like Robin. For Luffy to become a king he himself being strong won't help that much unless his crew is strong to which means Sanji being there. For him to say that for an incredible friend means more and right.

@@Mr-ON are you serious? I can write a thesis on why you are so wrong in your assumption but it would be a complete waste of my time. Just one though, Sanji has proven himself loyal, capable, and dependable. Finding another cook with the same level of background is very much difficult if not impossible. And Luffy requires firepower too which Sanji provides in spades. Lol, Luffy requires only Robin to become Pirate king. it seems like you didn't even watch one piece. Luffy doesn't know how to navigate, how to cook, he can't heal himself. He can't fight everyone alone. Everyone is necessary. And Naruto is completely dumb to ever think what he has with Sasuke was anything like friendship. And Sasuke has no problem with killing anyone from Konoha. So his importance is completely rubbish for Naruto.
      what you said is hilarious!
if you have no capacity to understand how different a ninja village in naruto and a pirate ship in one piece is. then you really need to grow up more.

@@hhrrm620 Mind you naruto and one piece are two very different series but they are also quite similar in terms of how the protagonist is written same as naruto the world that Luffy inhabits is revolving around him.Luffy never ever faces any consequences for his actions because fate always favours him. Luffy's character is flawless when to compared to every other one piece character. He is the child of prophecy who is destined to succeed.
These so called apparent flaws in luffy's character that he can't cook or navigate on his own are at the end of the day irrelevant.
You have an example of this in the story.
When luffy lost his entire crew on sabaody, lost his chef and fighter sanji that was never a problem for luffy because he is the main character so oda gave him boa Hancock in the next arc who loyally, willing, and happily fed Luffy just as much if not more than Sanji.
Luffy lost his entire crew just to assemble
a monstrously capable crew in the span of 10-15 chapters in impel down. A crew that repeatedly risked their in order to save Luffy's just like the straw hats and one of them jimbe who just met Luffy; was willing to sacrifice his own life in order to save luffy just like Zoro. The notion that the straw hats are irreplaceable is naive.
just look at dressrosa where luffy didn't even need half his crew to defeat doffy and his family that's because he on the spot allied himself with a fleet worth of chracters to defeat doffy.
That is the reality of Luffy's character that
people magically start admiring him and his actions. Even a character like kaido was constantly singing his praises because luffy is awsome and flawless and kaido can never reach luffy's level he will always be regretful and flawed

      @roleoahotondji54 Před 3 lety +1

I don't remember that Naruto say he can't become Hokage without Sasuke returning to the village, but you miss the point if you think that is what he think. Naruto hasn't need to Sasuke to become Hokage, this isn't the point. He doesn't want to save Sasuke because he promised that to Sakura, it come from himself. He want to save him, because he consider him like a friend, he understand him a bit, and don't want to let him sink into his hatred. Sasuke considers Naruto as his friend (his only true friend even), but denies this friendship that he considers as a weakness, a brake on his thirst for power/vengeance.
About Luffy, in fact Luffy doesn't really need to Sanji, or at least his role (cook) in the crew is superficial. Luffy want to Sanji to come back because he is above all a precious friend. When he say he can't become Pirate KIng without Sanji, it isn't litteral; it's to show how much he means to Luffy.

    • @LuckOfTheDrawReborn
      @LuckOfTheDrawReborn Před 2 lety +1

You're off the mark with Naruto.
First, he's not going after Sasuke for Sakura. Naruto tells Sakura this to her face during Kage Summit Arc. Second, Naruto's belief is that the Hokage takes care of all of the villagers no matter what. To be Hokage would make it Naruto *duty* his "Ninja Way" to save everyone, which is why he was so shook after failing to protect Neji during the War, he couldn't save one of his friends.
Rounding back to Sasuke, Naruto's exact wording was "How can I be Hokage if I can't even save one friend?" How can Naruto trust himself to protect the village if he can't even help Sasuke, his "first friend"? Saving Sasuke required Naruto to empathize with his pain, and empathy is something Naruto is way head of the curve on compared to every other shonen protagonist. Naruto relates to other people's pain by calling back to his past as a Jinchuriki. No one else could've related to Neji, Gaara, Nagato, Obito, and Sasuke.
