When a BF-109 spared a B-17

  • December 20th 1943, a badly shot up B-17 struggled to stay in the air, at the controls Charlie Brown. Passing low over a German airfield, it was spotted by Franz Stigler who raced to intercept, just one victory away from receiving the Knight's Cross. What happened next would be called one of the most incredible acts of kindness between enemies.
Thanks to Adam Makos for allowing us to use the footage of the first meeting of Stigler and Brown. You should also read the full story in the book 'A Higher Call' by Adam Makos & Larry Alexander.
We received many requests to do this in our new style. We hope you like it.

Had he shot down the Pub and earned that Knight's Cross, Stigler would've been a mere footnote in history, only remembered by historians and the biggest history nerds. By sparing the Pub, he not only did the right thing and saved multiple lives, he cemented his place in history. He'll be remembered as an honorable man who did the right thing, against his training. He found a brother through it, too. RIP to both Brown and Stigler.
I hope that the rest of the crew who lived long enough got to know who Stigler was.

6 years after his death, he was also immortalized in a Sabaton song. Also, the crew of the Pub today have 25 descendants. At the first B-17 crew reunion, Stigler was invited. He told Brown that he didn't feel like he should be there since he had been fighting on the other side. One of the Pub crew's descendants outright told him that none of them would even exist if not for his actions, so he belonged there just as much as anyone.
He knew he would have to live with the actions he took that day. So he chose to follow his conscience rather than his orders. I imagine that made his later life a lot easier. He lived to the age of 92.

I guess those who were not Nazis were the good guys fighting for survival for their nation like Stigler did and those who left the Nazis and joined a resisting force (like we saw in the battle of castle itter in 1945). Very well put, I've heard this story numerous times, but to see the video of the two meeting was beautiful. I'm always impressed and inspired in humanity to hear stories like this. Where at war, in the worst of times, things like duty and service can meld so easily with hate and fear. The honor shared between aviators has always been pleasantly surprising to me.

I don't know how the fuck you did it but I cried when I watched this originally a while back when I first came across your channel and the remaster made me cry as well.
Where did you put those onions??

That shot of the B-17F and the Bf 109-6 flying off together when the deaths of Charlie and Franz were mentioned was absolutely beautiful. Probably how they made their way to heaven. Charlie piloting his B-17 and Franz in his 109 providing escort once again and for the last time as they make their final journey to The Great Beyond. I hope Charlie waited for Franz to join him. RIP to both pilots.

The sad thing is that franz stigler is dead and his burial unknown,
Happy veterans day, no matter if they are, German, Japanese or Russian, they were all yoing men with families

      That is so unfair.😢
At least his name, and his act of kindness is remembered for an eternity on the internet.
Both Franz and Charlie live on in our hearts and minds.

The original version of this story is what got me hooked onto Yarnhub. Its still one of my favorite videos even though you've changed your video style. Its just a wonderful and powerful story. Seeing how you've improved over time and continued to get better and better has been a joy- and you continue to be my favorite CZcams history channel! =)
