========= No Bullets Fly LYRICS =========
From down below an enemy spotted
So hurry up, rearm and refuel
But through the bomber’s damaged airframe
See wounded men, scared to their bone
Look to the right and then look again
And see the enemy in the eye
No bullets fly, spared by his mercy
Escorted out, out of harms way
Fly, fighting fair, it’s the code of the air
Brothers, heroes, foes
Killing machine
Honour in the skies
B17
Flying home
Killing machine
Said goodbye to the cross he deserved
He risked his life two times that day
To save an unknown enemy
Escort to safety, out of the killzone
A short salute, then departed
========= Historic Fact ==========
Following a successful air raid on the German city of Bremen, Charlie Brown's American B-17 bomber, ‘Ye Old Pub’, suffered severe damage. When German fighter ace, Franz Stigler, was ordered to shoot it down, he risked his life to escort the bomber to safety instead of attacking.

At 3:38 they show Stigler pointing over his shoulder to the right, followed by Brown shaking his head "No!" That actually happened. I read the book "A Higher Call". Stigler didn't think the B-17 could make it back to England due to how heavily damaged it was and was pointing them to neutral Sweden where they would be safely interned. Brown thought Stigler wanted him to land at a German airfield, which was why he refused. BTW, Stigler flew close formation with the B-17 over the coast because he knew German AA gunners would recognize a 109 and not fire. He not only refused to fire himself, but also protected the B-17 from other German fire. If any man deserves an honored place in Valhalla, it is Franz Stigler.
war may mean death but it doesn't mean heartless.... most of the time anyway
@@hunterbear2421 True. During Operation Market Garden when British paratroopers were cut off and surrounded at Arnhem, they set up a field hospital in the basement of a hotel. During the battle, the upper floors were hit by shell fire and set ablaze. The British commander knew the wounded in the basement had to be evacuated before the building collapsed, but the incoming fire was to heavy. He sent word, under a flag of truce, to the German commander explaining the situation and requesting a temporary ceasefire so the wounded could be saved. Not only did the German commander agree, but many German soldiers laid down their weapons and crossed unarmed into the British perimeter to assist in the rescue operation. @@carsismyaddiction6919 it's also a sign of a good commander. The entire purpose of a military is to accomplish the political goals of the state through force/violence. Using excessive force (such as killing injured troops) actually makes your acts less effective. As it may make the enemy fight on even past the point of being combat effective.
In fact such acts of compassion can motivate an enemy who is no longer combat effective to give up and surrender. Thus saving you time, supplies and personnel. This is a lesson that goes as far back in history back as Cyrus II of Persia (500B.C.).

May both Brown and Stigler always be remembered for what happened that December day in 1943. To add to this story, Charlie Brown actually took Franz Stigler to a reunion of the 378th Bombing Group, an Air Force reunion that Charlie had become a part of after the war. Once the members of the Bombing Group met Franz Stigler, they made him an honorary member of the 378th for his heroism in saving the Pub that day.
Never shall we forget.

"If I ever find out that you've shot down an enemy parachuting pilot," Rödel told him, "I will shoot you personally. Although we are at war, we cannot lose our humanity. @@Kanefan701 unfortunately it can be only in the air. The reason of the mercy of Franz Stigler was in the air code of the war. For the pilot destroying the enemy with the parachute it is a shame. The fact that the German fighter pilot showed such humanity in the midst of war reminds us that while governments may have evil designs, the people are still just people, and while it's one thing to shoot at someone who is trying to kill you, it's a different thing to attack someone who is defenseless.

Women: "Men can´t even cry over Titanic"
Sabaton and Yarnhub: "Have you heard the Tale of Ye Old Pub and Franz Stigler?"
Its a story not many know, and with good reason...for if the story ever broke during wartime, Franz would probably have executed. But the story goes, that he spotted Ye Old Pub, wounded, on fire, bloodied. He could have fired. He could have downed the men. He could have been awarded for his...barbarism. But his own master, his old commander once told him, that to shoot such pilots would be tantamount to treason and would put a bullet between Mr. Steigler's eyes. So despite his repeated gestures to order the plane down, at great risk to all involved, he escorted Ye olde Pub home. Ye Old Pub's commander told them to censor the story to save the man's life. Years later, the pilot one Charlie Brown sought out the pilot and they met. It was a glorious meeting. And they remained friends until they flew on their final mission together into the annals of history. Perhaps the lesson here is that at the end of the day, honor trumps any award.
Yes I did that and I hope everyone appreciates it. RIP Charlie Brown and Franz Stieger
I've been watching this for the 50 time, still makes my eyes wet everytime!
@@goldosprey his commander had actually said "if you shoot at a man in a parachute, i'll shoot you", or something to that effect. he didn't fire because he didn't see a difference between the Pub and a parachute, they were, for all intents and purposes, defenseless. the commander told them to censor it as much to save the pilots life as because it would sent the wrong message : the idea of an honorable enemy pilot would have potentially had a negative impact on allied forces : i forget where, but there was a quote that at its core, was about how oftentimes in war you dehumanize your opponents, because if they were human, what does that make you? if they had told the story of an enemy pilot showing humanity in war, it would have likely made some of their pilots more hesitant to pull the trigger on the enemy

This and the christmas truce from WW1 are for me the absolute symbol of compassion in war.
fun fact: Franz Stigler had enough victories to get the Knight's Cross, he just gave them to younger/beginner pilots who he flew with. He also fought in Galland Circus along with the greatest fighter pilots who ever lived. He remained human in the most terrible time of humanity, an absolute legend. (If you want to learn about him more, I recommend you to read the Higher Call book)
Galland was another of the legends of the Luftwaffe.
@Anson Leung my sources mostly from Higher Call, which is mostly Stigler’s own storytelling... he flew in the Galland circus where he became friends with Galland, but you were right, only one bomber victory needed for his cross

"Fly, fighting fair,

This is undoubtedly the most beautiful tribute to brotherhoods and bonds formed out of WWII. Ever. Of all time. Franz Stigler and Charlie Brown earned something better than the Knight's Cross or a Medal of Honor.
They earned their own bond of brotherhood. Together.

Agree. Hats off to Herr Rödel, former commanding officer of Herr Stigler, for instilling such value in his men.
"If I ever see or hear of you shooting at a man in a parachute, I will shoot you myself."

@@PanduPoluan to be fair that’s a war crime but then again when did that stop the nazis
@@lilithdoyle5703 I’m pretty sure Stigler viewed the bomber as a man in a parachute so it was pretty important
@@TheWaggishAmerican If Ye Olde Pub was shot down, will that prevent Germany from being bombed? Answer is: No, the Allied will simply replace it with another bomber. It's not like Ye Olde Pub is the one and only bomber capable of bombing Germany. So letting Ye Olde Pub survive, in the bigger picture has no effect to the war.
tail gunner: worst job, like ever

You see how many times The tail gunners just get Fucked over.
Ball gunners where worse
One of my great relatives was a B-17 tail gunner
He survived the war, but died before I was born
Also single most important gunner position. Waist gunners were always debatable (the idea was to prevent fighters from matching speed and hanging out in blindspots) and most were untrained support personnel from the base (cooks, supply, admin support). While in training Stigler was told by his commanding officer “If I ever see or hear of you shooting at a man in a parachute, I will shoot you down myself. You follow the rules of war for you - not for your enemy. You fight by rules to keep your humanity.” Stigler later commented “To me, it was just like they were in a parachute. I saw them and I couldn’t shoot them down. “
Just a small correction to your post. I read the book "A Higher Call" which details this story. It was well after Franz Stigler was a fully trained and experienced pilot that he was assigned to North Africa. It was there that, when he first reported in, his squadron commander told him, "Shooting a man in a parachute is not an act of war, it is an act of murder. If I ever find you have done that, I will draw my pistol and shoot you myself." Just a small detail.
@@tomjustis7237 Thanks for the correction. I haven't read the book. The quote was something I picked up several years ago, but as many things you read, it changes with the years. But thanks again.
@@abnurtharn2927 No thanks necessary. As I said, it was just a small detail. You still had the concept right, that someone above Stigler instilled in him that belief which allowed him to spare the B-17, and that's the important thing.
Meanwhile, in Japan...
Well, almost right. He actually said that anyone who'd shoot a man in a parachute would be shot by him upon landing. Comes to the same conclusion, but i think a bit more threatening as it's more personal.
"If I ever see or hear of you shooting at a man in a parachute, I'll shoot you myself!" Brigadier General Gustav Rodel
"To me, it was just like they were in a parachute. I saw them and I couldn't shoot them down." Franz Stigler.

@@Thomas.Wright this story is one of the most moving of all war stories I've heard. Sabaton produce the best music about war history, but not to glorify war, rather to inform. You could say their music is anti war, because they tell it like it happened. My other favorite is "Sky Pilot" by Eric Burdon and the Animals.
