Different density materials used tut tut = cold spot. Plus the uk have a bad habit of using sand & cement which has ZERO thermal value what so ever. So most if not all that internal leaf is cold regardless of insulation. Should take a leaf out of Europe book and use glue with 3 mil joints to cure thermally contaminated block work . 😂 this bloke is a joker.
The do look nice Justin . The problem that can arise with them though if they were reclaimed from interior walls of old buildings they were probably never meant to be used as face brick and could be more susceptible to frost and water damage than bricks that are meant for face work .They are really beautiful to look at though lots of character in them .
We use these bricks in the US too . In Texas , they've been very popular to use since the 70's . They're sometimes refered to as Chicago bricks , because most come to us from the Chicago region , from recycled bricks , after older buildings are razed
When I lay stocks, I gauge them 80mm a course. If u build a corner, 10 courses always work out to 800mm, give or take 10mm. I seldom get 4 to a foot, unless they're slightly smaller. Nice work 👏

Wait till it starts to go, wire brush to recess 5mm then soft brush off. I’ll expect a message of thanks wen u apply this finish. Absolute dream boat stuff mate. Give it a go, exposes all the discrepancies and nicks in the bricks out. Nice graft bro. Good skills. Nice to see someone giv a toss 🤝

Houses were built in sand and lime in the old days the movement of the building would not crack when London changed the big townhouses to flats you could take the buildings down by hand in this video the old stocks he is using are still to this day the best brick to build with
A row of terrace houses a street long and not an expansion joint or crack in site. Now I have graduates telling me to make the mortar stronger, put reinforcement in my beds and put expansion joints everywhere. Is it me?
Pieces of rubber cut and shaped up do a better job and are easier to use, each to their own though. Its good seeing another brickie doing a proper job, most youtube brickies are just run-of-the-mill, Rob Songer being an exception.
A 6" piece of rubber fan belt works pretty good too. The natural curve sits well in the hand too. Needs to be a fairly wide one, (not off a Micra lol), Off a truck or tractor etc. Once they wear down into the fabric layers they leave a fairly flush and lovely rubbed finish. Stands up the the brick edges better than a wooden one...
You are rite the guy I learned from said ..... the level is only to check your eyes and never set a BRICK into the bed by taping with trowel handle or blade ,,,,,,if you did that he would give me a little tap I On my wrist with tip of his trowel blade hurrrrttttts
I'm a construction project manager. Was on the brick for 20yrs before uni and managment. Smack the level all you want. Put the trowel in your arse cheeks. Spread the muck by hand. Hold the level in your toes. Do what you want. If the quality of work is there...i certainly do not care one bit. If i did a site visit and a gang were using lump hammers on thier levels...but the work is right. They get continued contracts. Simply not an issue. The work is checked regularly by contractor-agent-clerk of works. No one cares how you do it. They just require that you do it. And produce the quality required. How you get to that is your business.
Looks ok you should point it leave it to semi dry then pat it with a churn brush brings aggregate up same as the old days when useing lime but its a good attempt to match old builds you do need to be using lime
Were doing a project now where its has to match old surrounding lime mortar buildings with blue lias stone, same method lime mortar stone based lime sand left for 3 days and beat back 👍
Tips, don't hit your level to level the course, fill your perps properly, always bed the DPC on mortar, not dry, as you now have a weak dry joint right around the house, also looks like your brick corner finished above the blockwork, should be the other way round so the wall ties run down to the face work.

Brutal. I give those soft old bricks about one of two winters before they all start spalling. NEVER use cement with old bricks, the mortar must be softer than the brick or the brick becomes the perishable component. Do yourself a favour and pop down the local Travis and get a few bags of NHL 3.5 and mix it with only Sharpe sand. 1 lime to 3 sand.
My beautiful Edwardian house has been destroyed by cement repointing, this is a clear no no. I've had to grind it all out and replace with NHL 3.5 lime and it looks significantly better. Plus, it's beautiful to work with. Once the bricks start to spall they're ruined, heartbreaking...

hydraulic lime is the proper job for those bricks no cement and if you must use cement put hydrated lime in mix ,but nice to see a english brickie leave his profiles at home

If there is no need to use traditional lime mortar then old bricks can be satisfactorily laid with Portland cement/sand mortars. Hi , I run them against brick walls to sand them down and mould them into shape . Best advice is create 3/4 different shapes and thicknesses to suit . Brilliant for engineering bricks also ,most can’t joint up cause their wet but use the timber it absorbs the water out with less smearing 👌

Never hit your level with the blade of trowel!! It will end up looking like crocodile teeth. Bashing blade on brick all the time makes you sound like a woodpecker and after a day's shift your mates ears will be ringing.
Why don't you put insulation in the cavity? It's relatively cheap and it really helps to reduce the cost of heating and cooling. The cellular concrete of the inner wall help a bit but not much...

The only thing that I would add is a different Bond. Running bond says modern to me.

Like the wood jointers .we did a reno on a farm house late 1800s I used the end of my masonry brush to do joints matched original joints real good
