  • Come with me on a History tour of Bowes Castle, County Durham
Bowes Castle lies just behind the front street of the village of Bowes in County Durham
The early Motte and bailey built in the north west corner of the former Roman fort Lavatrae, was replaced by the present stone castle between 1170 and 1174 on the orders of Henry II.
Bowes was a planned village built to support the castle.
The castle went into decline and was largely dismantled after the English Civil War and the ruins are now owned by English Heritage with free admission during daylight hours.
