I took this tour today because of this video and I had a free day to explore. I was reluctant at first (social anxiety) but it ended up being a great tour and happy that I went on it. Thanks for putting this video together.
Yay!! I’m so glad to hear that! My pleasure and I hope you enjoyed your time in Iceland. If you are still here, I hope you enjoy the rest of your time. 😊
Good for you! Be proud of yourself. Social anxiety is hard. I find it helps (helps me at least) when l remind myself that it's really only a very few people who don't have it to some extent and, a surprisingly large proportion of people are 'faking it til they make it'. Most people are so busy thinking about what they look like to others that they're not actually even focused on you. Cyber hugs.
Now I don't like Iceland.
i guess if your lite in the loffers , this is your town

Such a weird policy to ban the animal that's been with humans the longest. I am a cat person, but still dogs helped us survive and need to be appreciated.
I agree; dogs have blessed so many lives with deep love and affection, such a shame and so unfair, in my opinion, that there is an outright ban on having them in the city... Even small ones!
Dogs do live in the city now. I say it in the video.
In the video I share the history of dogs being banned. Things have changed.
@@AllThingsIceland Thanks, did not stay till the end when I thought it was a cats only city, though I like cats.

Iceland used to ban all dogs from the country
In Iceland, the capital city of Reykjavik banned having dogs as pets in 1924 because they discovered a tapeworm was being passed from dogs to humans and could cause severe complications or even death in humans, according to Smithsonian Magazine.
Cats are filthy creatures but the government says it's okay.
What Zoonotic Diseases Can Humans Get From Cats?
Ringworm
Rabies
Toxoplasmosis
Giardiasis
Cryptosporidiosis
Salmonella & Campylobacter
Cat Scratch Disease
Roundworms & Hookworms
I grew up here in the 70's and remember well how openly the ban was being ignored.
The first effective treatments for tapeworm were invented in the 1960s. There is a growing resistance to treatments and hygiene is essential for prevention. It makes sense that when treatments were created people would ignore the law.
The rest of the world seems fine, it appears Iceland is a evil psychotic country
And yet cat poop carries a parasite that is much more dangerous and turns people into literal zombies and is a great danger to pregnant women. These people are clueless.
I have seen this in Muslim cities like Alexandria.
The absolute exclusion of dogs results in cats roaming free, plus you get stray cats in the city that are not feral.
I was sitting in a park area and got swarmed by a bunch of cats, including a mom and her kittens.
NGL it was actually really cute.
When we were there in 2022, we stopped at a shop where the owner makes drawings of Reykjavik with the cats seen in different locations, two of which were living in the store. We bought a drawing and it’s hanging in our house. Such a nice memory of Iceland. I also heard that the only dogs they allow are the Border Collies for the shepherding, and they keep the population going by keeping the puppies.
Such a nice memory. But the dog myth is 'a bit' hyperbolic, there are all kinds of dogs in Iceland and back in the day when dogs were officially banned they were still everywhere because Icelanders don't like the government telling us what to do. In the 70's there was for example a growing number of poodles and today there is a large variety of dogs here from Husky's and Greenland sled dogs down to Chiuauas and yapping fuzz balls.
There's actually a breed called Icelandic sheep dog. They are super cute.
@@thornyback good, i have a cat and a dog,was thinking ill of people in iceland who don't like /have dogs
I met a VERY fluffy grey cat when I visited Reykjavik. I live in the Canadian Rockies and outdoor cats are essentially cougar or coyote chow, it's so nice you all can let your cats outside without worrying about them too much.
We live in the Colorado Rockies and have the same problems.
We have the same issue in the Kootenays, so many outdoor cats go missing
Cougar and coyote do such a useful job
@@justwilliamcatapultpoacher2275 do you spend a lot of time in the woods?
@@clarissathompson Unfortunately not as much as I would like, I am in the overcrowded, ( this may change when the effect of the medical intervention that so many voluntarily took starts increasing ) nature depleted UK , not helped by the damage done by domestic and feral cats. In Australia, cats have caused the extinction of several species , domestic cats are an invasive species and need controlled.
Iceland is now considering a 7PM curfew that would require cats to be inside at night. An overabundance of cat (and consequent reduction in songbirds) is obviously also due to the original ban on dogs!
In an internet that seems saturated with troubling news and too many disturbing people, this video was a wonderful holiday gift. Thank you, and please have a safe, warm and healthy 2024 in Iceland.

That last black cat you're holding looks exactly like my Maine Coone named Magic. He was huge but super friendly with a soft meow. He passed some years ago. We still miss him and his adopted little brother Herman. Even though it's been over a decade since my childhood kitties passed, we all still keep them in our hearts. We now have two kitties from the same litter, Sara and her brother Loki. They showed up as kittens on our porch 6 years ago and when we found out they needed forever homes, we adopted. They're both asleep in my lap as I'm typing this. Cats are wonderful silly mischvious creatures❤
I lived in Keflavik in the 70s. When we moved, I hadn’t remembered ever seeing a dog that wasn’t working. I was terrified of all pet dogs for years until my parents got me a puppy to get me over my fear.
I live in Washington state, we decorate with cabbage in planters here year round. Love the kitties and video❤
Oh, interesting. I’ve not seen that until I moved here.
Glad you enjoyed the video! 🤗
Apart from being cute as hell as videos go, it was fascinating to learn about one of those aspects of a country's culture that I've never considered before. Thank you.
My pleasure and so glad you enjoyed the video. 🤗
Thanks for the fun and informative video. My dad was stationed in Iceland with the US Air Force, in the early 1960's. He sent us coins and some knitted caps and scarves. He liked Reykjavik and told us stories about his time there. Now that we're retired, maybe my husband and I will visit someday.
My pleasure. Thanks for sharing about your dad’s time in Iceland. I hope you do visit in the future. 😊
I stayed at an AirBnB-type home in Reykjavik and got to know a friendly kitty named. He was so comfortable in the home, I thought he lived there but his tag revealed his name was KüsKüs and that he lived elsewhere. He visited every day of our stay. I was sad to leave him.
❤ this ,i recently lost 2 of my cat's, they have individual personality. I miss them so much. I love dogs too. We need stricter law's in the UK, to protect them. 🙏
Oh no! This makes me have to rethink my desire to visit Iceland! While I love kitties, I am death-rattle-asthma-allergic to them. If there were a cat in my hotel I would quickly be in the emergency room. 😢
that is a horrible allergy to have. the good thing about iceland is they do have the european attentiveness to allergy concerns, so you might ask about cat avoidance vacations in iceland.
Me too I'm allergic to Cats but not dogs
There is just one hotel where this particular cat goes into and is certainly not a thing that most people encounter when here. I only showed Baktus in the hotel because it is one of his hangout spots but I don’t know of any other hotel in the city where a cat is just hanging out.
I'm the opposite.. I'm allergic to Dogs and Birds, but Not Cats.
Well, maybe allergy shots might help you, depending on your type of allergy. It may take some time, usually you have to take them for 1-2 years, but most people say they work really well and helped them with their worst allergies!

My town catches stray dogs but not stray cats. However, my indoor outdoor cat along with my neighbors cats keep strays out of our yards. There is a cat hangout in one neighbors yard, we can find our cats there.
One thing I noticed about this town. My house never had mice despite being in a small, rural town.
Very interesting and thanks for sharing. Regarding the cats here, they are not strays roaming around. They have homes and tags. If a cat doesn’t have a home, it goes to a shelter or the cat cafe so it can be adopted. 😊
Your town probably had few songbirds as well, because feral cats destroy them.

I love cats and was in Iceland this past June. The cat café was on my to do list but unfortunately due to time spent in that one shop (handmade sweaters) I ran out of time (and 2 expensive sweaters, hahaha) but I'm planning a return to Iceland next year (God willing) to revisit some places and of course the famous Westfjords. I am glad they didn’t ban cats. Cats are very clean and smart.
Very bizarre policy since cats carry toxoplasmosis, cat bites are much more likely to become infected than dog bites, cats destroy wildlife, and humans are twice as likely to be allergic to cats as they are dogs. The video was very well done though, and the tour is a really fun idea.

Love the cats. I could see your friend collects religious pictures. After living in a large city all my life the thought of a smaller city is so attractive and peaceful. That country looks beautiful.
This answered why I only heard "cats" being rescued in Grindivik's current (Nov./Dec '23) evacuation. I wondered about the Dogs. Obviously that's a smaller town, not the capital. That's a long time to have restrictions; it gets into the culture. Thanks for explaning

What fun! Thank you! People use cabbage for decoration a lot in USA, and don't eat it, which is weird to me, but I put a lot in my yard, and also eat them! I wonder what they are feeding those cats, they all look so healthy! Your guide has a very interesting and colorful home!
It’s a non-edible variety.
What a fun idea. Also, my city has those cabbages in local park landscape too.
Glad you enjoyed the video. It’s so interesting that cabbage is decorative in other places too. 😁
@AllThingsIceland Hi there! Then you'll be very surprised to find out that decorative cabbages can be found in small public spaces (for ex. placed around sidewalk tree bases) all around NYC. I'm sure because it's a quick and inexpensive way to add colorful plants to pedestrian areas. But yes, you'll find them in big cities, too. 😊
When I moved from the Chicago area to Atlanta, Georgia many years ago, mine of my first surprises was seeing kale, decorative cabbage, and pansies growing in pots and around people’s street side mailboxes - IN DECEMBER! My friend from the area was surprised to learn that gardens further north, go completely dormant over winter. It’s typical for gardeners to plant cool season crops like kale, chard, lettuce, and other leafy greens to grow in the same places you had your tomatoes, beans, and peppers for the summer. Best thing is, with crop rotation your soil doesn’t get worn out, and you get the goodness of home grown food all year round.
Really appreciate the tour. What a fun way to see a place and areas a tourist usually wouldn't go do.👏👏😃
This was delightful and your smile is infectious 😍

As a cat lover, I’ll need to put Iceland’s lovely furry Capital on my travel agenda. Your tour guide has some gorgeous cats himself.
No wonder Iceland is depressed ! We need unconditional love when there is no person in our lives .
Unconditional love, as you write, it means to NEVER chain any animal down and let them roam free. Only selfish and needy humans want to claim owner-ship over for example 'a dog' who is then to follow the owner's command, often locked up in small apartments in bigger cities while the owner is at work all day.
It's down-right cruel and selfish! .... If there is no other human being in your life, but then to (ab)use an animal, in this case it's mostly dogs who are treated like some trinket, just so that 'poor human being' doesn't feel so alone.
That type of character in humans is exactly the opposite of 'unconditional love', because it just means to think about what you want 😕, and NOT what is actually correct for the animal by nature!"
@@Ya_Love You clearly don't know how to raise and live with dogs if this is how you think they are supposed to be kept. You probably think farmers rape their cows to get milk, too?
@@Ya_Love I read somewhere some people just want someone or something dumb, loyal and obedient, which an animal will do even if you're crazy, eccentric or who-wants-to-live-with person.

Hi!! 🤗
I love dogs! But could never live without cats! 🐕😻
Heh, I'm more of a dog person now though I did have a cat when I was younger. Weird that dogs got banned when free roaming cats are probably just as not more likely to spread diseases. One of them is a parasite called 'Toxoplasmosis gondii' to humans which has lots of 'wonderful' side effects.
True. I had a dog who contracted Toxo from cats. If a pregnant women touch's cat litter, she can get toxo and pass it to the unborn child; which causes serious brain damage etc.
Cats are KNOWN to have more bacteria on their claw than most animals. I myself had "cat Scratch Fever" yes it is awful and real. Cats need to stay inside! They are literally the largest threat to birds.....
I, myself was wondering about the poop situation- atleast when a dog on a leash goes, the owner knows where it is to pick up.. ?!?!
@@auntijen3781 - cats don't 'poop' on side-walks but dig holes in the ground and then cover them. So cats are a lot cleaner than dogs, and also not as noisy. Dogs are kept on leeches, and this means the dog is kept chained like 'a little slave', no freedom while often left alone in small apartments while the owner works all day. To me, that is human selfishness and not animal friendly. ... just saying ...
Because shitting in sandboxes where children play and walking/sitting on kitchen tables where food is prepared is very clean and healthy…
on my first stay in Reykjavik I was stunned how many cats there are and how friendly and cool they are.. 90% came to get petted..
Glad you had a positive experience with the cats here. Yes, they are super chill. 😊
Charming video! I didnt know any of this. Thank You! You have a new subscriber.
I’m so sad for the dogs but in the meantime I’m so blessed to see those lovely and fortunate cats.
A very contradictory place!!!
Seriously, I think it's a win for dogs. You would not believe in rural Texas. The amount of dogs usually more than one at a time that are just brought out and dropped off on the road, and then they get killed by drivers or coyotes. Or landowners who they are trespassing on their land I think the United States could take a lesson here. It needs to be so much harder for someone to get a pet of any kind. People are way too cavalier and thoughtless. When it comes to being a pet owner, you're either in a thousand percent or don't get one!
@@loritr you are a control freak

I saw that people there would carry their dogs in a carrier to release them in certain parks, clean the mess and back to the carrier. I can't believe cats who also are bearers of diseases that can infect humans like toxoplasmosis can ramble about but dogs can't. A dog is as clean as the owner is so I guess since cats cleans after themselves on their own, they are good for lazy owners that doesn't want to carry the spade and the plastic bags with them. I like cats but I love dogs too. I can't see a world without them and it's sad for me to see countries without pets like those in the Middle East (because taking care of a pet is a type of worship according to them or something of the sort 🙄).
Toxoplasmosis is hardly ever transmitted by cats (you'd have to touch their feces and then put your hands in the mouth), but by eating raw or undercooked food.
Dogs, unfortunately, can be very dirty and even disgusting. I inherited my parents' dog, one fine day, in a walk, she began rolling in, what I thought was grass. I was livid when I realized she was rolling in diarrhea, human or dog I'm not sure. Imagine living in an apartment and having to clean that! Even more commonly, they like splashing in dirty water, rolling in the dirt, etc. Not an animal I'd ever have in an apartment! Cats are infinitely cleaner!
That's a really stupid law, to ban all dogs. I'm glad they now allow them back.
5:01 I live in a small town in PA USA and it's common to have cabbage as a stand in for flowers when it gets colder here also.

My first trip to Iceland, many years ago, a cat wandered into my campsite I spent a good part of my evening was hanging out with the cat, feeding it bits of cheese.
Urgggggh omg what a vile policy. Gosh why would a country (I know this is the capital of Iceland before I get jumped all over ) and its people vote for that policy. I’ve got three dogs ( Belgium mally , German shepherd and a Japanese chin and five cats . They all get along just fine . Having said that dogs are classified as sentient beings whilst cats are not . That’s a much more important policy that needs to implemented , giving cats the same status as dogs, instead of segregation
I would love to live in a city where dogs are banned. I don't hate dogs, but people either don't keep them under control, or they're just prisoners in their own house and garden. I think we need to be much, much stricter about who gets to keep dogs, and why. It's not good for dogs and not good for people.
If you want dogs to be banned then you do hate dogs. Banning would prevent responsible dog owners from haing them.
I agree. - Dogs are never free to roam, because they are kept on leeches. Then, if the dog-owner is irresponsible their stool is to be found often on the side-walks in cities. It's disgusting! ... while also making a lot of noise, disturbing those people who want to live noise-free. Why would any human being treat an animal as if so it's some sort of a trophy in possession and 'must listen and do as the master says'? 😕 It shows the selfishness of human beings, not caring to even leave their dog(s) locked-up home alone in small apartments while they are out working all day. I often wonder, if this derives of a selfish character-trait 'just to have something to cuddle with' that comes running on command .... never caring that animals do not belong into enforced captivity. Same with people who keep birds in a cage. It's cruel. 😟
Beautiful 😻 thank you for sharing 🙏.
This is so cool! Thank you!
What 😹 joy! I had trouble in vet school working w cats until I learned that the reason cats usually gravitate to the person in the room who doesn't want anything to do with the cat or it's usually the cats who will "choose" their 'person' in the household that may fall on to the autism spectrum. This is because normal, modern HUMAN BEHAVIOR is the opposite of cat (most animal) behavior.
Humans greet each other, with happiness, lots of loud noise of joy- we especially make sure to make direct eye contact (infact some might think it's suspicious of you if you don't make eye contact), we're all smiles from ear to ear, we embrace, hug, etc, etc
We just don't appreciate how far, *behaviorally* we've drifted away from our origins on the animal kingdom family tree.
The behavioral evolutions that were useful to keep our branch, hominids alive for millions of years seem alien to us, but not CATS!
In the cat & animal world, if 2 animals interact, (and especially if one is much smaller than the other) the only message received by the cat from; LOUD (everything is loud to cats) HIGH PITCHED VOCALIZATIONS + EYE CONTACT/STARING + 'SMILING' aka BEARING ONES TEETH (Oh my!) is "I'm about to be LUNCH" and then imagine being scooped up for what we think is 'kissy kisses' but they think is THE END! LOL.
BTW, I'll share a little secret for y'all, the fabulous & wonderful people of Iceland.. The best way to "call' a cat is just to use the universal gesture for $$$- making that whisper noise of your thumb moving quickly, back & forth over the opposite 3 fingers... Just do that for a bit at a level the cat can come by to investigate & after they come to the sound, reward them w a big scratchy scratch, or another type of treat if you're trying to train your new kitten..
But please BE SUBTLE and, remember whatever you do DONT MAKE EYE CONTACT. 😹 Xoxo.
I'm pretty new to cats, I've always had dogs but I ended up with a couple of stray kittens last year and it has been a real learning curve as much about myself as about cats. Watching my extrovert housemate completely fail to impress the cats as he exclaims and gesticulates and dashes around and pets them roughly like dogs. Myself, I set the task of mirroring the cats and we share a lot between us in slow blinks and heavily lidded off centre gazes. My theory is that cat respect involves buying into the cat's fantasy that it is invisible, even if its sitting on your face, until such time that the cat 'reveals' itself directly.
That sucks! I am a dog person. Also, with so many medications now to keep away parasites, you'd think dogs would be welcome back!
Cat person. But you are right. Meds solve the issue.
Wonderful video. So many things I liked. The cat cafe reminded me of Japan. I had only heard of them doing cat cafes and always wanted to go there to see one. Then, the cabbage flowers were amazing. Big beautiful flowers. I had never thought of that but I will plant some cabbage in my flower garden to watch them flower. Last, neither of my two cats are large but I have always wanted a very large cat. I love that big black cat. Thanks for the video.
First time I see images of Mouse Hell🐁 😂
Great video it was very interesting thanks 👍
Well Iceland became a place I would never visit.
Much as I love all animals I dislike the invasiveness of cats. They mess just as much as dogs, digging up your flowers and garden, screeching during mating, also have worms, climb in through windows and don't socialise as well as dogs.
Dogs on the other hand are loving, protective, loyal and have been our companions for a very long time.
If I have to choose dogs win hands down.
I have grown up with dogs and cats both in fact I have one dog and one cat right now so if you think you're going to go out there and see a stray dog and he's going to come to you and wag his tail think again because he might just bite you then what are you going to do
That was fun! I learned something about dogs and cats in Iceland. Thanks
Hi happy holidays 😊. Love your video.
Thank you! Happy holidays to you too!! 🤗❤️
We have a cat cafe in our city. Greensboro NC and my daughter had the nerve to book us an hour or two with those darn cats. And she knows I am not a fan of cats. I was definitely on edge the whole time I was there. 😅
Aww, sorry to hear that you were on edge. 😭
So, there are no birds in the capital?
