  • Rachel believes Steph is picking on Tasha, but Steph finds out that the girl is actually a diabetic and her poor eyesight is caused by her unwillingness to take her insulin as it will cause her to put on weight. Rachel is impressed by Steph's concern for her and her efforts to persuade her to take her insulin, and the discovery of her situation reconciles Aleesha with Danielle.

That was pretty low of Rachel, to hint that Steph might be jealous of a teenage girl! I was glad Steph turned out to be right on this occasion.

Thank you for the hyperglycaemia storyline because that is what happened to my wife one morning I tried to wake her up and she was completely unresponsive so I called for an ambulance.

Say what you want about Steph but she was a lovely woman i would have loved to have a teacher like her when i was a kid maybe i wouldn't have screwed up as much as i did.

Steph was one of the best characters - what she lacked in teaching ability she more than made up for in compassion and empathy that no teachers could rival. Truly iconic - it would be amazing if she came back for the new series as I'm sure Donte could use her support!

Not taking your insulin is also putting your life in more danger. Especially if you’re a type 1 diabetes.

I felt very sorry for Tasha. It must have been horrible for Tasha to be in that condition which causes her to collapse. I’ve never known that her condition would cause blindness and not taking her insulin would put on weight. It’s strange how people’s bodies work.

It's actually taking the Insulin that makes you put on weight.

unfortunately this sort of eating disorder can happen with diabetics if you don’t take your insulin you can be really thin but it has serious consequences

I know almost nothing about diabetes. I was thinking that if Tasha had very high blood sugar levels, wouldn't physical activity be a good way of lowering them?

I can see why you say that, when I was doing a walk (parachute drop) where we had to find our way back with a map I had a friend who was diabetic and she ate a bar to keep her blood sugar levels up.
I think it might be that it's a balancing act like they can be lowered , but adrenaline can make them go up. But also if you are very high they won't do much to help, especially if you are too out of it to do it well.
But I am no expert just from what I know , so if anyone knows better and I have made a mistake feel free to correct me.

As a type 1 diabetic, I knew about this growing up - not that I experienced this. It's called diabulimia. Essentially, it's bulimia without making yourself vomit like non-diabetics would. They see not taking insulin as a good substitute for that.
