    Such an interesting topic Michael. I am a hobbyist who performs after work at a few local restaurants--- But, my day job that actually pays my bills relies on annual fees from my clients. I have been in my industry for over 25 years and know the value I offer my clients. That tug-of-war between knowing your worth, but also really wanting to get through that front door to new clients is very interesting. I could go on and on, but, at end of day I think knowing your worth and setting that bar at a good level as one of the top Magicians in the world, that will end up being fair to you,, and your clients. Same goes for me in my industry. The handful of events I've been at over the past few years where they hired a Pro Magician, the experience that people get is just so valuable-- takes the event to an entire new level-- especially when hiring someone like you.

      That is super insightful! Good to know it isn't an industry specific issue and that anyone in the world of sales, entertainment, or business even in general could benefit from this little thought experiment! Also, thank you so much for the kind words!

    Hi Michael. Excellent video! Please know how much you are appreciated! You so insightfully hit the nail on the head: knowing where to lightly tap the hammer 🔨 is the key. Knowing how to engage the audience, keep the audience entertained, and how to leave the audience wanting more. Thanks again for all you do! Your friend, David

      As always David. Cheers and thank you for your kind words. I think it is up to us to show them its more than a hammer and if they just want someone who can tap a hammer with no skill, they can find that for dirt cheap! Haha

    "$750? Well, if I left out this... and didn't do that Magic Castle Award Winning thing... yeah, I could do $750."

      Right? “YOU GET MY B MATERIAL!” Lol jk. Seriously though I did have them offer me some bonus perks as a bit of a trade to make it more worth it. I discuss these ideas in my “Upsells & Downsells” video if you are interested to see how I handle clients who cannot afford my services and ask for a discount.

    Interesting video mate. Bottom line is i think people can charge whatever they want, clients get what they pay for and i like to believe that the client realizes that after the gig. Just yesterday i was asked if i could drop my price for a kids show to $125 as they (apparently) found someone to do a magic show, balloon twisting and face painting for $125 for two hours. Some clients care about their guests, and some just want the best possible deal. I also think some in parts of the U.S vary massively in what they can charge given the cost of living/minimum wage differences form State to State.

    I have not finished watching this video yet but I am going to comment. This is an interesting discussion that ultimately delves into various economic forces. Price determination is a big question as indeed both the personal choice of the supplier and the outside influences affect the decision of the supplier.

      Exactly! Hit the nail on the head!

    I use a price tier. Walk around is different then a parlor or stage show. I also discuss budget of customer with them. If I feel that I have to get this gig then I will see what I can add in terms of value for my set price!

      I also have performance videos to send if they want to see an idea of what they get

  • @westonding8953

    For someone that is pricing too low, the best thing I would say is warn them to be aware of the “Giffen Good” effect where if a product (in this case, a magic performance booking) is priced too low, less people buy it and less of it because it makes them feel poor and at some point people want to “feel rich”. This may be an effect in place with performance prices being too low but of course there is too much nuance in this matter to give definitive answers.

      @OBrienMagic  Před 4 měsíci +1

      This is a good point! Pricing something too low may discourage people from buying because they are worried they will be scammed or loose out on something. I am prolly not going to drop $20k on a Bentley knowing how much they are worth. Smells like a scam from the jump.

    So as a hobbyist I don’t have this issue yet. But when I feel like I’m ready to do some paid gigs will the industry share with me a fee schedule?

    • @OBrienMagic
      @OBrienMagic  Před 4 měsíci +1

      The issue is there is no standard... ILike I say in the video, I was complaining about someone charging so low, yet here I am cbeing told I TOO am charging too low lol. So who knows what the right answer is?
