I believe this was Mariah's debut. She was 19 and this performance was a private showcase in front of a lot of music industry higher-ups. I think she was nervous which is why her voice was a little shaky and she's known for having terrible stage fright. She still killed it!
she also is known to do well in duets because she doesnt try to out perform or sing the person she's with nor the song, she's all about showcasing the song so with aretha, luther, brian mcknight, boyz 2 men, except patti try as she might no one can out sing patti labelle in a duet so even singing her loudest patti's vice well pierce through, but even in their got 2 be real duet mariah still reveres the patti and adds her ad libs to support the showcase the songs . its about the lyrics and vibe not competition or vocal acrobatics

Basically this song wasn’t produced because Mariah wanted to focus on recording her emotions album... and was scrapped from the debut album. But she did preform it live and for plenty of years all we had was snippets. Finally the amazing lamb Tom Webster releases it for us. He had it before (he didn’t specify how) but risks getting in trouble for this, which is why he didn’t release it until now.

Yeah this was before her debut, but they recorded it after they performed it live, and scrapped it because she wanted to continue producing her emotions album. This song was recorded before her debut released, and although Mariah practically finished it, she preferred to continue on to the next album instead

This was written by Diane Warren for Barbra Streisand who had a minor hit with it in 1989 (same year as this live version).

This is actually the original. But mariah never finished her studio session. I think she wanted a completion of only songs she penned.
Michael insisted on having the song on his album so he got Patti to sing her parts

@@joaquincastaneda6695 I was talking about the duet version. Michael Bolton wrote the song with Dianne Warren. They gave it to Barbra. Michael wrote it about his ex wife. This song should stay a duet. Props to Barbra but the magic comes out when it's two dynamic voices.
