Rather teach you how to find trending niches than give you niches because you will not learn how to do this for yourself in the future. You need to put in the time and effort if you want to succeed.
I have a question. I use Book Bolt, but my books aren't selling to me. Can you explain to me how to add strong keywords in the bookbolt tool?
Use AMz expander chrome tool and use the keywords you find on Amazon search and plug them in.

Hi Romney, I'm really interested in doing picture books via KDP but am trying to get a realistic picture of profit after costs. Based on my calculations from the numbers you're showing ($2.16 profit /book x around 2900 books / year) that's around $6300/year before advertising costs. Given the book is ranking so highly in relation to everything else in the category, I'm assuming there's been significant paid advertising or other marketing involved that might bring the actual profit (excluding labour) down to $4k or so. I'm genuinely trying to figure out if it's possible to make a living from kdp picture books and am finding it very difficult to find out what the truth is. It seems KDP is good for books with black and white interiors but is very rarely profitable for colour - would that be fair to say?
Hi Grant, there are so many variables involved here and I can only go by my personal experience. The pricing of your book will impact your author royalty, the number of pages and the interior color. I've got a number of children's books that do really well but that's because I do the following:
- Offer paperback, hardback and ebook versions
- Sell the books on KDP, IngramSpark, Draft2Digital and I facilitate bulk orders
- I sell the books across the USA, Canada, UK, Australia and some other international markets
- I optimize my Amazon Ads to be as efficient as possible.
Some people do all of the above, some just a fraction of what I do so that will impact the success of your books.
As for making a LIVING off books. Yes, you could, but that takes time, consistent effort and patience which many people can't handle. They want money quickly and when that doesn't happen, move onto the next thing. I try and balance out my business revenue via a number of revenue streams to do with self publishing and that has been perfect for me.

Amazon's cut is ridiculous
It’s large but if you don’t want to print your books, arrange delivery, manage returns, take orders and deal with customers you can always do it yourself?
@globalselfpublishing maybe i will do it myself or with another fulfillment company, but of course they have more trust in the market and it's easier, but they are definitely using their leverage to take advantage
Completley agree although I'm OK with Amazon taking their % of book sales for their ability to sell my book globally. I also use IngramSpark because they have a reach of over 40,000 distributors. I just wouldn't have the capacity to reach as far across the globe if I completed the fulfilment myself.
