    My grandfather(May he rest in peace) was part of the first wave of US forces to storm Omaha Beach as a US Army Combat Engineer. He told me as soon as his squad made it onto the beach, it was absolutely chaotic. His squad's task was to make sure the path from the beach into the hillside of Normandy was clear of obstacles, sadly he and his squad were not able to get this done. He ended up taking a MG 42 round to his left thigh as his squad was charging up to the rally point. He told me he couldn't move as he was in great pain, but he described that as he was slowly losing consciousness he clearly remember the smell of the sea mixed with so much blood and the screams of so many men dying. He was rescued and shipped back to England for recovery and as the stubborn he was, he got back to the war zone about a few weeks ahead of when he was expected to fully recovery from his gunshot wound on his thigh. He then went on to be part of the Combat Engineer squads that helped the 101st Airborne in the Battle of the Bulge(Yes, he did indeed fight alongside Easy Company). He used to smile when he told me they were some of the most hardened soldiers he ever encountered but deeply respected them. Now about two hours into the battle, he took bullet to his right shoulder not too far from the Command Foxhole as he put it. Now he asked the Medic to just plug the hole in his shoulder to keep fighting which the Medic did. After the battle ended, my Grandfather was shipped back to England once again and after he was fully recovered, he went back to the warzone. He told me that nothing too exciting happened to him after he got back there, although he did show off this Lugar he got from a German Officer which I still have to this day. I will always show greatest respect to those who fought in World War 2, especially my grandfather~

      My grandfather(RIP) was about 14 years old when USSR attacked Finland. He wasn't old enough to fight but he was put to, for example, watch over an island on the Finnish coast. He said that the most terryfying thing to do was to go alone in a dark to the other end of the island, without any source of light, to make a mark(I don't remember where) to prove he had been there. He was constantly afraid that soviet soldiers would attack him.
      His wife(my grandmother) was about 6 years old and living only a few kilometers from the Soviet-Finland border in Karelia when the war started. She and her family managed to escape with the last train of the nearby station. Their home was burned down as part of scorched earth tactic.
      Her father(RIP) was later, during the war, hospitalized after his squad was hit by a grenade. He was the only one in the squad to survive but a shrapnel of the grenade hit his head and it remained there for the rest of his life. My grandmother said that after the war he became more quiet when sober. But when drunk every sharp object in the house had to be hidden because he would chase the rest of the family and threatened to kill them. Or as my grandmother put it: "Everytime he came back from drinking, he went back to war"

She said after the war she thought humanity is doomed after WW2. She said only after she saw my face for the first time as a baby that she started having hope. I love my beautiful grandma Adelaide 4 ever, the most beautiful,magnificent strongest woman i,ve ever known. God bless all and much love from Palawan island, The PHILLIPPINNES.

    My great grandfather was part of the US Navy during world war II. They were near Japan on a ship and were attacked via air by the Japanese. I was told by family that the ship caught fire and that my great grandfather saved a crewman's life, getting his entire back severely burned from the fires. He came back from the war and joined the police force becoming an undecover investigator, became mayor of his city, and has a building named after him. He died just a few months after I was born, but I feel close to him for some reason. If I were to meet him today I don't think I would be shy with him at all. I'm proud to be his great granddaughter.

      Thanks, bro. Always good to see a Węgier ('węgierski' means Hungarian but as an adjective describing a noun, 'Węgier' (m) and 'Węgierka' (f) are used to refer to your nationality) :) Well, following the war up until '89, Poland was under the Soviet occupation and this period was yet another Dark Ages for Polish nation. So yeah, Nazists and Soviets were a diabolical plague of the 20th century. Chwała bohaterom! RIP and glory to all the fallen heroes! And eternal damnation to all the evil-doers!

      I do also. What's most fascinating to me are the details: like Lenin being shipped on a train to Russia in a railcar welded shut..Hitler, suing the USSR for peace, when the tide had turned against Germany...backward USSR designing the best tank of the War, America, one of the worst....and running off the best scientists in the world because they were Jewish, Einstein included.

      @K W It upsets me when ignorant people confuse detail with strategic events. For example, we won but lost thousands of our soldiers, who trusted the US government to build decent weapons. The first Sherman's were deathtraps. Don't lmao at me when you can't distinguish the difference.

      @carpediem6568 Před 5 lety

      @@114927jarka Sorry, I don't believe that, at all. Show me where those figures came from. The original Shermans had thin wall protection. The engines were gasoline, more probable to explode, and the gun had nowhere near the lethality of the German 88. Tthey were also tall, making them more visible to the enemy. My Dad saw a circle of Shermans destroyed by one German tank. The next generation Sherman had thicker armour and a better gun, but were still inferior to the Nazis. Shermans were fast, their only superiority. They needed it. Toward the end of the war, US started shipping the Pershing, a much better design.

    Looking at these old archival clips brings back a lot of memories. I can't believe that what I lived through in Southern England is now part of History. It's a weird feeling that the sound of a Siren, or the drone of German Bombers still triggers feelings and I will never forget the sound of doodlebugs coming over in droves from 1944 until nearly the end of the War.

      I hate to say it, but this comment doesn't seem to hold very true anymore. My great grandfather would be horrified to see American citizens walking around parading Hakenkreuz flags and wearing Hakenkreuz armbands, giving Roman salutes, spouting hate and death to entire groups of human beings.

      I am interested in it as well. I find it horrific and terrible, but it's so fascinating that a man like that could rise to power like that and cause so much destruction.

      You don't have to be ashamed of your interest towards nazi Germany. We have to understand the past in order to create a better future and the rise of the nazi party and their influence is part of that past.

    Fantastic introduction! Goosebumps! This war caused more human destruction than anything the world had known before and suffering not seen since. Its history and participants should be respected and remembered as WWII represents the worst in humanity and similar events should never be repeated.

    Why can they teach you this things at school?! History can be so interested but teachers at school make it so lame 😒.
    I think is because they have to stick to the curriculum and there are some many parts of history that they can't touch! ... so weird that US education is like that. I come from a 3rd world country El Salvador and my history teacher was GREAT!
