I truly feel that man’s emotion is exactly what BANKSY is about.. On any other day people will purposefully avoid that side or area of the city...but since it was said a true Banksy piece appeared.. people then knowingly went out of their way to enter that side of town. A place with a stigma of harsh beings and even harsher behavior. Whoever that man was, was and is the art in real life form. Art is something that shows emotion while you’re showing that emotion back. Whatever that emotion is, you just feel something. Simply, thank you.
Dude's doing the right thing. Anyone who's been to East New York, Brownsville, and most of East and South Brooklyn knows they're decrepit areas that have been ignored in the borough's recent "renaissance". Just look at it from his standpoint: nobody gave a fuck about that street corner before the spray art went up. He has every right to protect and monetize on an asset that's been donated to his neighborhood. And the truth is, none of those people would visit it if the Banksy wasn't there.
I've watched this a couple of times and am leaning toward this being staged. He says a few things that make a lot of sense... like "you wouldn't come here if this wasnt here?" He makes some very good points about the people who are there to see the art in an urban way.
Basic human nature. If it was some no mark artist who painted it, the locals wouldn't give a fuck if it was some no mark artist, there'd be no publicity about it. Add a name and a bit of buzz to the piece, and watch the rats (pardon the pun) assemble. Society in it's truest form. From every pathetic angle.
Good point. Difference is people line up to give museum directors cash without thinking about it. I would think Banksy would want us to think about why we'll give the Guggenheim Foundation $45 for art that happens to land on their property but we won't give these guys $5 for stuff in their hood that people would otherwise avoid.
Thank you Banksy for sharing your wealth you have helped so many people make a living ... I really enjoy your work and Bristol is my home town. My brother owns yoyo burger on the triangle, pop in and get a free burger
The willing artist in this case is Banksy and once the work is put on the wall it is there for all to see. Art collector or profiteer equally destroy this intent and control ownership for themselves.
Reminds me... I saw someone mess with a Keith Haring drawing he just did in the subway. Keith was and walking away from this amazing piece he just did when the guy wet his hands and and wiped it away. I said to the guy "Don't you know who just did that?" he replied "Nope and I don't care".
maybe banksy set this "sell" up as well as his actual canvas sell, $20 for a picture, $60 for the artwork. Or maybe I've had too much coffee this morning.
Kinda reminds me of when Anthony Bourdain was in Haiti and, with the best of intentions, decided to give food to some of the children lingering around his eating film crew. Only to have started a fight between the people in the crowd trying to get food once he had fed a few of them. Throw a $300,000 work of art in the ghetto, don't be surprised when a scary black man is trying to extort money from you to take a picture of it.
yes i also agree with you, it wouldn't surprise me at all if this was another one of Banksys tricks. on your side note, i'm no expert on museums mate but as far as i know they do all three, buy, get on loan an take donations
I love it I love that those guys that are really from that neighborhood made them pay to see it I think that is what it was meant for the art banksy fido mean
So what makes these guys so much better than the people who are going there to take pictures because they like the art? How are these guys improving the neighborhood? Or improving their lives by doing this? Why do you feel like these guys are the heroes of this story?
I'm from NYC. This is definitely not an experiment. Banksy is genius but even he cannot control or predict the power of the "hood". Gotta love the NYC hustle.
For the dumfux - the location is THE POINT. The video is an extension of the wall art. It's all about challenging the way WE see things & the contradictions that are juxtapositioned up against each other like an oxymoron. It's about VALUE. Commercial value & how that is perverted (dictionary definition), when perspective is altered or the environment is different. It's not complicated. Nothing Banksy does is. Just deceptively simple.
This whole situation is art at its truest form.. The bums... The people trying to buy a picture with the painting... It's society as art...living breathing art...
I would rather laugh at them in their face and troll them till they commit a crime.. Their actions are deplorable and has a direct correlation with what is wrong in the urban landscape. I might as well be what they expect then.
Ahh my daily dose of Banksy, I'm getting addicted. Might have to have an intervention! -Seems appropriate as he's in the United States of America right now.
what it looks like doesn't really alter what it is, does it? i can't argue its success or failure as a "museum" funny frank zappa quote: “The most important thing in art is The Frame. For painting: literally; for other arts: figuratively-- because, without this humble appliance, you can't know where The Art stops and The Real World begins. You have to put a 'box' around it because otherwise, what is that shit on the wall?”
That's true, sometimes you do need money right now. And I did grow up on welfare, but we were ok on it thanks to the local food bank. I realize not everyone can live on that. But they guys I've known who hustled like this weren't trying to feed anyone, and this includes the ones living with me growing up. They did NOT contribute to what my mother was doing to support us.
Didnt see this happen in any of the other countries Banksy put his artwork up in. Even in a warzone like Gaza. This is a great example of how petty and money driven American culture is.
Nah, haven't you seen Exit through the gift shop? His personality shines through every work he does, he just has his own team to get things done quicker. But it WOULD be interesting if Banksy was a project where each team member were the masterminds behind all the works.
Based on the fact that it's broad daylight and the video was taken on a weekday... I'm going assume that these gents are not the proprietors of this building. Owners of buildings are generally on the inside of them, hence the idea of a building.
Well that would be the upsell, raising the stakes. "Limited engagement only, pay $20 now before we destroy it because we don't give a fuck and we're crazy!" Don't think for a minute they're actually going to destroy it (although someone else might - in my neighborhood all the best street art got wrecked by taggers). Have you never met a salesperson?
You know whats sad? The fact that Banksy, creates amazing Art like this In rough places like the "Hood" In Brooklyn, to make It beautiful and give It another meaning than just gang violence so that people can visit sorrow filled places like this area In New York, but In return gets exploiting, Ignorant shit like this, Instead of decent human beings appreciating the Art and It's message. The world Is a sad place.
Didnt say it was the only place, just a prime example of how the self proclaimed beacon of the free world is also a beacon of greed, predatory capitalism and consumerism.
As for the art galleries, tell me more. I've only ever gone on free nights and the few people I've known who had shows never complained, but maybe they just wanted to not burn bridges. I'm genuinely curious.
i was talking about some random guy charging you to get past him before you even get to the museum. Museums buy their stuff from the artists as an investment. Banksy give this to the public for free an these guys are exploiting it,
Emergent irony alert! The beaver is destroying a symbol (NO PARKING) so he can repurpose it into something he can really use. And in this video, the symbol (OMG a real Banksy™!) is being destroyed by this hoodied dude so he can repurpose it into something he can really use. I doubt this guy is a Banksy confederate, but this particular slice of life so perfectly imitates this exact piece of art that it's kinda spooky. (And why can advertisers stake out a corner for profit, but not humans?)
I truly feel that man’s emotion is exactly what BANKSY is about.. On any other day people will purposefully avoid that side or area of the city...but since it was said a true Banksy piece appeared.. people then knowingly went out of their way to enter that side of town. Yes!!! Gentrification in action
The guy has a point.
I am wondering, did Banksy pay them to make that hustle?
We'll never know...
Respect all round. Hands up all those that have made money off the back of Banksy fame! I have. Thanks man.
Art brought back to importance!! Love what this guy is doing for art!!
this is brilliant on so many levels
This shows the greed for money and not for the appreciation of art.
I've watched this a couple of times and am leaning toward this being staged. He says a few things that make a lot of sense... like "you wouldn't come here if this wasnt here?" He makes some very good points about the people who are there to see the art in an urban way.
Tim Young well why would you go there? It’s obviously a shithole 💩
Basic human nature.
If it was some no mark artist who painted it, the locals wouldn't give a fuck
if it was some no mark artist, there'd be no publicity about it.

Today I had the oral examination of maturity. I have to thank Banksy, if my thesis was highly appreciated !
Man, u were standin' there, filming, showin us how ur art deviates, great!
LMAO-- I am CRYING this is so funny!
These guys are as much a part of the art as the art itself. Or else why would Banksy have posted it?
The willing artist in this case is Banksy and once the work is put on the wall it is there for all to see. Art collector or profiteer equally destroy this intent and control ownership for themselves.

Exactly! Thank You! Finally, someone with a brain. You sir are awesome.
maybe banksy set this "sell" up as well as his actual canvas sell, $20 for a picture, $60 for the artwork.
Or maybe I've had too much coffee this morning.
Hysterical. "We're trying to get this off the wall. But before we ruin it .... "
typical New york! someone needs to give homeboy a hug!
my hood, all the tough guys are dead my man. remember that>
if art was only about originating, there would be no more artists today. it's about putting things into new perspectives where it's at.
These dudes are actors hired by Banksy to complete the piece.
BLACK ART/CULTURE IS POPULAR BUT NOT BLACK PEOPLE! I agree 100% with these guys
Exactly man!
yes i also agree with you, it wouldn't surprise me at all if this was another one of Banksys tricks.
on your side note, i'm no expert on museums mate but as far as i know they do all three, buy, get on loan an take donations
I love it I love that those guys that are really from that neighborhood made them pay to see it I think that is what it was meant for the art banksy fido mean
East New York doesn't play. Hipster politics do not work here
wow
have they ever tried to EARN money and not MAKE it?
now how is he profoundly different from the masters of his enslaved ancestors?
True beauty is silent.
What a great interaction.
So what makes these guys so much better than the people who are going there to take pictures because they like the art? How are these guys improving the neighborhood? Or improving their lives by doing this? Why do you feel like these guys are the heroes of this story?
I'm glad Banksy posted this. I can't imagine what else they've done for money... Actually, I can, but I don't want to.
Banksy knows what he's doing....
"i gotta eat".. you're already eating.. a sandwich..
you gotta love ghetto entrepreneurs...
Profiting on PUBLIC PROPERTY! SOunds like harlem street smart residents should be in congress!
value perceived is value achieved
That is Banksy in the flat cap, he has grown his beard out more than normal
it's more like to strangers standing outside the Museum changing people to get in
Love it that Banksy make some videos on youtube!
Thats the Power of Banksy
Assuming he [Banksy] wanted to shed light on the less fortunate areas...mixing cultures in a bold way.
I'm from NYC. This is definitely not an experiment. Banksy is genius but even he cannot control or predict the power of the "hood". Gotta love the NYC hustle.
If You Escape What I Escape...You'd Be Chargin To See A Banksy Too!
'once we are gone you will see.'
"Excuse me, Officer, I was trying to view this crass vandalism and these young hooligans won't let me near it!"
These guys are totally hired by Banksy
As for "JUDGING" the guys, well until you've spent a lifetime in THEIR shoes...
That would be assuming we would still be there. I wouldn't still be there trying to extort money out of every situation.
lol homeboy holdin the pizza

That one rat spray couldn't have had a better connotation to go with it. The rat's time will come.
This whole situation is art at its truest form.. The bums... The people trying to buy a picture with the painting... It's society as art...living breathing art...
Poor guy didn't smoke his sour diesel blunt today.
Art has always been this way, people trying to make money for art that they didn't actually do.
I would rather laugh at them in their face and troll them till they commit a crime.. Their actions are deplorable and has a direct correlation with what is wrong in the urban landscape. I might as well be what they expect then.
Just by thinking about it could maybe even be going past the point of Banksy, which might be the point, if you think about it, or not.
An ugly crime covering up a beautiful one.
On that note, this month has been thoroughly entertaining.
Ahh my daily dose of Banksy, I'm getting addicted. Might have to have an intervention! -Seems appropriate as he's in the United States of America right now.
I wouldn't be surprised if these guys were part of Banksy's installation, judging from his stunts in he past.
Im sure Banksy didnt expect this LOL.
BANKSY is NOT ALL
belongs to those who understands and appreciates
These guys and obviously THEY GOT IT BETTER THAN EVERYONE! xD
Exactly!
what it looks like doesn't really alter what it is, does it? i can't argue its success or failure as a "museum"
funny frank zappa quote:

Legend.

This man is employed by Dumbo. Dumbo seeks revenge on Banksy.
Is that Common in the red leather jacket?
Didnt see this happen in any of the other countries Banksy put his artwork up in. Even in a warzone like Gaza. This is a great example of how petty and money driven American culture is.
Can't agree more!!!
Nah, haven't you seen Exit through the gift shop? His personality shines through every work he does, he just has his own team to get things done quicker. But it WOULD be interesting if Banksy was a project where each team member were the masterminds behind all the works.
"i really dont feel like getting stabbed today."
I agree with HarryD as myself growing up in this city wish many of you here don't really don't know much about just what you read......
Dang Banksy, now you're going to get someone killed with this!
So did they pay the man? And does anyone know the art work link..??
Based on the fact that it's broad daylight and the video was taken on a weekday... I'm going assume that these gents are not the proprietors of this building. Owners of buildings are generally on the inside of them, hence the idea of a building.
LOL! Everyone wants a slice.
Well that would be the upsell, raising the stakes. "Limited engagement only, pay $20 now before we destroy it because we don't give a fuck and we're crazy!" Yeah but they give you free wine and you don't have to be verbally assaulted.
Didnt say it was the only place, just a prime example of how the self proclaimed beacon of the free world is also a beacon of greed, predatory capitalism and consumerism.
Exactly.
maybe they're all part of this piece :0
ha! east new york staying "real"
... could be another Banksy experiment?
Lovely
The girl in the background at the end with the white hat is the cameraman at the start. She knows Banksy.
:49 the man with flat cap looks like the driver for banksy's mobile art van that ran through NY. Possibly Banksy?
Complete set up. Complete symbolism.
As for the art galleries, tell me more. I've only ever gone on free nights and the few people I've known who had shows never complained, but maybe they just wanted to not burn bridges. I'm genuinely curious.
HAHA that's what I thought at first. What would be even crazier was if Banksy was a black guy and was hanging around in the background of this video.
i was talking about some random guy charging you to get past him before you even get to the museum.
Museums buy their stuff from the artists as an investment. Banksy give this to the public for free an these guys are exploiting it,
Keepin' it real, y'all. :))
What is it they trying to photograph?
Banksy is a middle age caucasian guy
it was a put on! A good picture of that art work is worth far more then giving them 20 dollars, a great spoof !
everyday hustlin
Plot twist, the black guy is Banksy.
