  • There are many miss leading sales going on on ebay stating items are gold filled when they really are cheap gold plate. There always has been a gray area when it comes to the exact difference in the different processes. Gold plate is electroplated and is a very very thin layer of gold. Gold fill is usually 1/10 or 1/20 10k, 14k, or 12k. This type of jewelry still has some value. Gold Vermeil usually sterling silver dipped in gold. Solid gold should be marked 10k, 12k (overseas), 14k , 18k, 22k, 24k. But remember one thing unless is 24k its technically not solid gold either, because it is mixed with another precious metal depending on the color of gold.

    how much should a gold vermeil coin (2.4cm) necklace cost? I am looking at one for around 220 and that seems quite expensive for what it is... but it is handmade and quite beautiful. is it worth it?

    In the 60 70s and 80s we bought v e r m e i l. It chipped so bad, all our jewelry did and I cannot believe that liquidation channel actually cell rings and jewelry made out of v e r m e i l for high prices when you know it's going to chip off. I texted them saying seriously? And they say it's expensive well it probably is expensive for chipping off the way it does. When we were teenagers we used to wear Vermeil from the drugstore for $3.75. Now they sell it for $75 and up. At least Platinum stays within the same color when it darkens as it rubs off. JTV jewelry last a lot longer than anyone else's when plated with anything. I don't know why but it does. Much better quality. And better prices

    A good video the only thing missing is explaining that 100% gold is very soft. Gold is not a hard metal just like fine silver and most jewelers will mix with an alloy just as they do to create sterling silver. The lower the karat the more the mix and the strong the metal. 24k won't tarnish or fade but it's not holding it's shape either. A 14K or a well done gold filled bracelet is your best bet, for authenticity and longevity

    • @kayjones7022
      @kayjones7022 Před 5 lety

      Also the harder the more brittle, higher karat gold will outlast hard metals because gold is more malleable and will only sent or scratch, not break.

    • @AyWunHunnit

      No that's what makes it fake trust me take a "heavy gold filled" anything to a jeweler and i bet he won't take it because you can scratch it off that's why you should only buy solid gold if u want it to be worth your purchase

    • @WatchDisplay
      @WatchDisplay  Před 8 lety +13

      +A100 _ArenJ of course many jewelers won't buy it however, thick rolled gold is much harder to scratch of compared to the gold filled garbage made today. Get a vintage heavy rolled gold chain and tell me how hard it is to scratch through the gold.
