Thetford Fridge Operation and Winter Vent Covers

- I show a general overview operating a Thetford three way fridge and explain how the auto power source works. I also show winter vent covers on the external fridge vents. These reduce the cold air over the fridge condenser to optimise performance.

Will have to try this easy to fit vent cover, we get quite a draught inside the caravan from the bottom of our fridge. Thanks 👍 Graeme
Hi Graeme, Thanks for watching and commenting. I never pointed out the actual purpose of the covers are to reduce the cold air over the fridge condenser to ensure optimum performance. The back of the fridge should already be sealed from the living area for when it’s run on gas. You probably have an air vent nearby, we have an annoyingly draughty one under our cooker. Good information Rob 👍 ours is a Dometic for some reason I thought the whole cover was replaced for winter ones but they're like yours that's easy .. will have to look into it thanks 👍
It’s good to know your Dometic vent covers will be an easy fit too. I had guessed the Dometic ones might be similar. They are not draught excluders though but are there to optimise the fridge performance in cold weather. Time will tell on this one or will we ever know ??? Cheers Rob

Thanks Rob. Can I ask a question about one of your previous vlogs? You use a Water Master direct water feed. Have you experienced any issues? I’m concerned about the possibility of flooding the caravan and the loss of pressure. Looking online, it really is a very mixed bag of what people are saying. I would really welcome your thoughts. Hi Paul, We’ve never had a problem in just over nine years of caravanning. We do however turn the main outside tap off as a precaution when we go out for the day. The Watermaster plug has a pressure regulator set between 1.5 and 1.8 bar. According to the label on the caravan water heater the max system pressure is 4.5 bar which is well above the Watermaster regulator. If you were to use a pump in an Aquaroll the pressure builds and stops. The pump will probably have a cut out pressure of 2 bar. This means the internal pipe work will have 2 bar of water pressure standing in it which is slightly more than the Watermaster. We have an onboard pump and use it to boost pressure for showering if the mains pressure is down a bit on site. If I were to use our onboard pump with suction hose in an Aquaroll with mains connection / float and a leak or burst occurred, the pump would turn on and the float would drop in the Aquaroll allowing water in to flood the caravan. Both methods could potentially flood your caravan! Hope it makes sense. We can all worry about things that may never happen. Cheers. Rob
Thanks Rob for you very comprehensive response. Your comments make perfect sense and your precautionary measure of turning off the water supply is something we have said we will adopt should we proceed with the purchase of a Water master. Turning the supple off when away from the Caravan is a good habit regardless of the system used!
